Advent Wreath Lighting Ceremony – Year C Third Sunday of Advent (Proclaim — Isaiah 12: 2 - 6) President: The Advent of our Lord is near, as we

make God’s love known in our world. President: As we light the third candle, we are

encouraged to proclaim the good news of God’s gift of salvation.

Reader 2 lights the candle Reader 1: Surely God is my salvation; I will trust,

and will not be afraid, for the Lord God is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. And you will say in that day: Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known his deeds among the nations; proclaim that his name is exalted. Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be known in all the earth. Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel. The Third Sunday of Advent

Lections are from the Revised Common Lectionary.

Daily Readings Scripture texts are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible.

Theme of the Lections God’s new is dawning in focus. It will be a day in wh9ich God’s compassion for the weak and oppressed is fully realised. In the meantime, Christians must act in accordance with God’s intention for the kingdom.

Lesson – Zephaniah 3: 14 - 20 A call to rejoicing, celebrating the kingship of

the Lord, whose care will provide security for his people. The future will be bright.

Canticle 9 – Isaiah 12: 2 - 6 The First song of Isaiah, a song of praise for

salvation, for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel.

Epistle – Philippians 4: 4 - 7 “The Lord is near… And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Gospel – Luke 3: 7 - 18 John the Baptist warned the people that they must repent. When the people asked what they must do, he told them to share what they had, to collect no more than was due, to be content with what they earned.

The Collect

STIR UP your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. Lesson ~ Zephaniah 3: 14 - 20 A Reading from the Word of God written in the Third Chapter of the Book of Zephaniah, beginning at the fourteenth verse. SING ALOUD , O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! The LORD has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more.

On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The Gospel ~ Luke 3: 7 - 18

The Lord be with you And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Glory to Christ Our Saviour.

JOHN SAID to the crowds that came out to be baptised by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

And the crowds asked him, “What then should we do?” In reply he said to them, "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise." Even tax collectors came to be baptised, and they asked him, “Teacher, what should we do?” He said to them, "Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.” Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what should we do?” He said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.”

As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, “I baptise you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing

floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people.

The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ Our Lord.

Advent Reflections We live always during Advent. We are always waiting for the Messiah to come. The messiah has come, but is not yet fully manifest. The messiah is not yet fully manifest in each of our souls, not fully manifest in humankind as a whole: that is to say, that just as Christ was born according to the flesh in Bethlehem of Judah, so must he be born according to the spirit in each off our souls.
