Dear My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, (cont’d) forward to return to their diocese and serve the People of God. At different Universities and Institutions we study deeper different fields, such as Sacred Scripture, Philosophy, Theology, Morals, Liturgy or Canon Law, which is what I study. Due to our different schedules, it is very difficult for all of us to meet everyday to pray together. Thus, Monday through Saturday we have English Masses at 6:30am and 12:30pm at one chapel and Italian Masses at 7:15am and 12:30pm at another chapel. We have a total of 10 altars where we can celebrate Mass. Frequently we would reserve an altar to celebrate Mass at a different time, if we cannot join others who celebrate at the scheduled hours. In addition, we have a Holy Hour at 6pm everyday. On Sundays, however, is when most of us can come together to celebrate the Eucharist at 11:30am. After the Eucharist, we have a great lunch at 1pm and drink tea or coffee at the end. I feel that our priestly life here becomes very monastic, yet with a certain academic emphasis due to our assignments. Here we have the advantage that it is easier to dedicate time to prayer and do so without rushing. Also, because travelling is very easy in Europe, many get to know other places. I myself have gone to Madrid, since my brother Carlos Jose is currently there studying a Masters’. It is certainly easier to travel from Rome to Madrid than from San Francisco to San Salvador, where my brother usually resides. The Basilica of San Marco is just 5 minutes away from Casa Santa Maria. I thank God that the parish priest has allowed me to help with some celebrations there. Quickly I learned how to celebrate Mass in Italian. Yet, I still have to learn much on how to write it. In fact, all my classes are in Italian. Language was one of the most difficult challenges I had last semester. The first weeks, I was very tired each day at the end of the lectures. I could not do much more afterward. This semester is very different. Now, I enjoy the lectures and assignments more. Really, the Holy Cross, the university where I study which is administrated by the Opus Dei, has very good professors. Considering that I had a certain allergy to Canon Law – I was not the best at it -, I like how the professors teach. The first year, is loaded with Philosophy and Theology of the Church. In addition, the professors are very good to emphasize often that the written law is meant to serve the community and each member in the mission of the Church. Therefore, the laws written by the Church should not be used as an absolute regardless of the case. It is truly a blessing to be in this assignment, including its delights as much as its challenges. I hope that the formation here enables me to serve better our Archdiocese, which is made of You, its People. Meanwhile, I will help our Archdiocese by offering our Lord what I do. Thank you very much for your prayers. Blessings, Rev. Armando Gutierrez

Allí, todavía no he ido.

Stewardship by the Book “Blessed are they who have not seen and yet be-lieved,” Jesus says in today’s Gospel. For those who have not seen to believe, however, we must be good stewards of our faith, living it joyfully and sharing it generously. Then, in our time too, “men and women in great numbers” will be “added to the Lord” See John 20:29; Acts 5:14

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Jubilee Year of Mercy

Second Sunday of Easter Last year on this Sunday, Pope Francis declared this year a Jubilee Year of Mercy. Saint John Paul II named the Second Sunday of Easter “Sunday of Divine Mercy” in response to Saint Faustina Kowalska’s Divine Mercy devotion, which offered spir-itual comfort to hearts world-wide. But Francis challenges us to make that comfort we receive a gift we gladly share: “We are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us.” The clearest expression of merciful love, says Francis, is pardoning others. “At times how hard it seems to for-give!” he acknowledges.

“And yet pardon is the instrument placed into our frag-ile hands to attain serenity of heart” (Misericordiae Vultus, 9). The necessary condition for living joyfully? “To let go of anger, wrath, violence, and revenge.” May Divine Mercy Sunday in this Jubilee Year of Mercy remind us that Jesus made mercy our life’s ideal and a criterion for our faith’s credibility: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7).

UNIRSE A LA COMUNI-DAD DE CREYENTES ¿Qué te ayudará a tener fe?

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Luadato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home,

a Parish Response

Interested in Pope Francis’ teachings on the environment? Want to help Saint Matthew’s become greener? Please call Monsignor for details on a workshop to learn about how our parish might respond to Pope Francis’ call for the care of creation. What is a parish green team? What are other parishes actually doing? How could we start and sustain a green team here? How does it help our parish? How can it help us live out our Christian call?

At the conclusion of Lent and the Triduum, we are grateful to so many people for making those Holy Days so memorable and heartfelt.

MANY THANKS!

♥ To all the members of the Liturgy Committee, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Ushers, Altar Servers. A special Thanks to all the Musicians and Choir members for spending so many hours preparing and leading us in song.

♥ To all those who got up early on Holy Saturday to clean the church until it sparkled and to all those who decorated the church with such beautiful flowers and magnificent taste.

♥ To all those who participated in the Rice Bowl Campaign.

The annual St. Matthew Parish Share the Light program provides fresh Easter meal baskets to St. Vincent de Paul families in need. On Palm Sunday March 20th, over 60 Parish and school families volunteered to provide and deliver baskets to families in need. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every family that participated. We received an overwhelming amount of volunteers and it is you who give this program its heart and soul. Also, we would like to express a very special thank you to Msgr. John Talesfore for his support and guidance with this effort. Kristen Childs and Bernadette Shu, Share the Light Co-Chairs
