Dear Parish Family,

Love is learning to put others’ interests before our own. When someone is

deeply in love, ‘real love’ he/she finds out that there is some self-emptying of personal wants to fulfil the needs of the loved one. When we have matured in this ‘love path way’, we may even recognize that love is really all-inclusive, that in loving “our neighbor as ourselves”, the one naturally flows into the other. We see that natural con-nection as we learn wisdom. Parents need to teach their children! While clearly loving them and allowing them space to make mistakes and to fail, they need to help them recognize that they are not the center of the world. One needs to know one has a God-given dignity and is precious first of all to the Creator. But at the same time there must be the realization that they do not have a right to be the center of attention, and that the world does not owe them anything. They have to be taught that they cannot have everything their way, that life can be hard; and that, “that is OK”. It is in adversity, whatever shape it comes in, that growth occurs. Young people have to learn that it is by accepting difference, by respecting the inherent dignity of others and relating accordingly, by not concentrating simply on their own fulfillment, that they in fact become truly alive. Salvation, ultimately, is acted out rather than passively received - learning to love “in sync” with God who loves everyone and who is purely and only love. Anything else is excess baggage that hinders passage through “the narrow door”. The narrow gates of the old cities were wide enough for a person to get through. This gate is the size of a person be-cause it is a person. Jesus is the narrow gate, the way by which anyone can get through to the heavenly city. In all the debates over who and how many will be saved, in our own musing about our own eternal lot, it is instructive to remember a truth that is disconcerting yet calming. We all most likely deserve a fate far less glorious than heaven looking squarely at the spiritual quality of our lives. After all, would not all of us be lost without Our Savior? But through him, the narrow gate, all may enter paradise, one by one in salvation’s long procession.

WELCOME THE STRANGER We have become accustomed to seeing pictures in the media and stories on the news about immigrants from Latin America and refugees from Syria fleeing vio-lence and destruction in their own countries, trying to make their way to a safe place. We have also seen the reactions of people who want to keep them away from their countries, who fail to welcome the stranger and the helpless children. Have we forgotten Jesus call to comfort the homeless and the stranger? They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the na-tions . . . to Jerusalem, my holy mountain, says the LORD. In the three readings for this day, we are told that we are to welcome these strangers, to welcome the disci-pline of the Lord, which leads to peace, and to strive to enter through the narrow gate into the glory of God s own homeland, the reign of God. TODAY’S First Reading — Brothers and sisters of eve-ry race and language will be brought to Jerusalem (Isaiah 66:18-21). Psalm -- Go out to all the world and tell the Good News (Psalm 117). Second Reading -- Strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees (Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13). Gospel -- People from east and west, north and south recline at table in the kingdom of God (Luke 13:22-30).

ARE YOU SOMEONE OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO…

Has not been baptized and would like to learn more about the Catholic faith, with the possibility of becoming a Catholic? Is a baptized Christian of another denomination and who would like to learn about and possibly join the Catholic tradition? Is a baptized Roman Catholic who has not received the sacraments of Holy Communion and/or Confirmation?

Then RCIA might be the answer for you. The goal is to prepare adults who wish to join the Roman Catholic Church, or who wish to complete their sacraments of Christian initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist).

You will attend classes where you will learn about the faith, traditions, and practices of the Catholic Church. Classes are available either in English or in Spanish. They typically run from September until Easter.

Please contact Deacon Rob Pang, Nelson Zamora, or the Rectory to register for RCIA or if you have any questions or need more information. Please call : 845 359 0078

Today’s gospel tells us Jesus is continuing on to Jerusalem. He is asked will only a few be saved. In reply, he said we should work to enter through the narrow gate, which allowed only one person at a time to enter through a very small entrance to the city. But then he talks about the master of a house, who rises up and locks the door and stops the entrance of any more people. Unlike the master in the 17th Sunday’s gos-pel, the late comers are not friends to the master but acquaintances, people the master encountered in the streets. Surely, they heard him, ate and drank with him and his disci-ples, but they did not commit themselves to him. In our own time it would be like a per-son who is baptized and is raised as Chris-tian, but does not have a relationship with Christ or the Church. To be a Christian is a choice to live a life in Christ, a life of love, of giving, of reaching out. God is a God of life and love, offering us the same now and forever. Heaven and hell are not places alt-hough we speak of them as such. God does

not punish and impart people to hell, actually they do it to themselves. If we do not choose a life of love and giv-ing, but rather choose a dif-ferent way of life, choosing self or some other thing set-ting us apart, we have made our own state or choice or

place without God and the love he has and imparts. Hell is choosing that separateness and living that way. This is possible because we have been given the freedom to choose and unfortunately we can make bad choices. God doesn’t choose evil or impart separateness, but allows the freedom to choose even at the cost of some being lost. Throughout time He sought to bring all to him, through the prophets of old and through his Son Jesus. He has been a sign for us since his life and death, a sign accepted and a sign at times rejected. For all of us who accept this sign and more important-ly live out its life and meaning will find the proverbial door open to them.

Enhorabuena a Sr. y Sra Cesar Castro

Que Dios te bendiga y te lleve a través de una vida de bendiciones y felicidad.

Bienvenidos a Keylor Castro, Lindsey Rodriguez, Alex Mazariego

Felicidades a los padres y padrino de amados hijos de Dios, que el bautismo sea el comienzo de una vida de fe y un corazón lleno de bondad y amor.
