Christmas Eve 4:00 Mass: Monmouth University’s Pollak Theater

St. Michael’s will be offering a parish Christmas Eve Vigil Mass at 4:00 p.m. on the Monmouth University cam-pus in the Pollak Theater. All are invited and welcome. The celebrant and homilist will be Fr. Alphonse Stephen-son, a good friend of St. Michael’s who often visits our parish to celebrate Sunday and weekday Masses.

In light of the extraordinary crowdedness and noise levels at the early Masses on Christmas Eve in our Upper Church and Lower Church in recent years (plus the strain on our parking lots and restrooms, etc.), we thought the addition of a “nearby off-site Mass” would reduce (and hopefully relieve) those stresses and time pressures and also enhance the spirituality and joy of our Christmas Masses for everyone. The Pollak Theater seats 700, has very ample and convenient parking, offers excellent hand-icapped access (no steps anywhere) and restroom facili-ties, and has wheelchair/ADA seating areas for nearly 20 Mass-goers. The temporary altar area will be festively decorated with poinsettias and a Christmas crèche and the pianist and cantor will lead the congregation in Christmas carols prior to Mass. The University will be on its Christ-mas Recess, so parking and traffic will not be a problem. A map is included in the insert page of this bulletin with details about accessing the campus and directions to the most convenient parking lot. We’re very grateful to the University for making Pollak available to St. Michael’s for this Christmas Eve Mass.

On Christmas Eve, the Church will close at 9:30 a.m. following the completion of the 8:00 a.m. Mass to per-mit preparation of the building for the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses. The Church will re-open at 2:15 p.m. on Christmas Eve afternoon.

●There will be no scheduled Confessions prior to the Christmas Eve Vigil Masses, Christmas Day Masses, and Masses for the Mary, Mother of God holy day of obligation. If an urgent need for Confession occurs on those dates, ar-rangements can be made by contacting the parish office. Please consult the bulletin for special scheduled extra times for Confession during the Advent Season.

CONCLUDES DECEMBER 22

Simbang Gabi is a Catholic devotion prac-ticed by Filipino Catholics to prepare for the birth of Jesus. Also known as Misa de Gallo (“Mass of the Rooster”), the tradi-tion began in the 1600s in the Philippines where church bells would start ringing as early as 3:00 a.m. during the last nine days of Advent leading up to Christmas. The devotion has become known as Simbang Gabi, which literally means “Night Mass.” All are invited to the last two of this year’s nine consecutive nights of the Simbang Ga-bi as listed below. All Masses will be celebrated in English. This year’s theme is “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” (John 1:14)

The parish’s outdoor Christmas Creche was installed on the recto-ry’s front lawn during the past few days (please see the accompanying photos from Advent 2018). The Creche is a gift to the parish and to the people of the parish and the community in memory of Rosa Alba Stranieri from Rosa’s family.

On Saturday the 21st immediate-ly after the 5:00 p.m. Mass we will gather at the Creche to bless

and dedi-cate it, to pray for Rosa’s eternal rest, and to sing Silent Night as a parish family. All are invited to attend and participate.

Pastor’s Note: Please read with care and concern the press release below that was recently issued by our Diocese. The closing of the two Catholic elementary schools as reported in the press release affects all of us as well as the students, parents, faculty, staff, and community as a whole in Willingboro and Maple Shade. The survival of Catholic education is under great pressue and its survival is of vital importance for all of us for a host of reasons and benefits including the students’ general education as well as imparting to the children: an awareness of God in their daily lives; a knowledge of the faith, Scripture, and Church history; a sense of serving as an instrument of God’s grace in the world; a Catholic-based appreciation of justice and civic responsibility with a focus on service and the needy; Christ-like decision-making and self-discipline with a strong moral and ethical foundation; and many others. There are many sacrifices involved in sending children to a Catholic school but the life-long rewards and benefits are countless. Please pray for – and support – the continuation of Catholic elementary and seconday education.

Enrollment, Financial Struggles Lead to Closing of Two Catholic Schools in Our Diocese

Faced with declining enrollment and significant financial shortfalls, two Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of Trenton will close this June. The news was shared Dec. 10 in separate meetings with the faculty, staff and families of Pope John Paul II Regional School in Willingboro, which is overseen by the Diocese, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Maple Shade, which is sponsored by the OLPH Parish.

Pope John Paul II Regional School, which was established in 2006 as part of a comprehensive re-structuring plan for Burlington County, has 113 students enrolled for the current school year, well below

the 220-student benchmark cited as necessary for financial sustainability. The kindergarten through eighth grade school sits adjacent to Corpus Christi Church.

The four area parishes originally named as sponsors of the regional school model have experienced change, with some involved in parish mergers and others facing their own financial challenges. As a result, funding from the spon-soring parishes has eroded, and the school’s support from the Diocese has risen to about $2.5 million.

In announcing the closure, JoAnn Tier, diocesan superintendent of Catholic schools, acknowledged the value that Pope John Paul II Regional has brought to Catholic students in the area, and the family atmosphere for which the school was known. She said, “It is difficult to close any Catholic school because of the values promoted and the environment provided. Sadly, Pope John Paul II Regional School is no longer sustainable. Its history will be a treasured memory for alumni and members of the school community. Sincere thanks are extended to the administration and faculty for their investment in the lives of the students over its years of operation.”

The closure of Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, which has served the needs of Catholic school children in the Maple Shade area since 1928, was announced with great sadness by Father Joel Wilson, pastor. The kindergarten through eighth grade school has experienced a steady decline in enrollment over the past five years and all indications are that this decline will continue. There are currently 125 students, again, well below the 220-student benchmark. Moreover, since the late 1990s, the parish and school together have accumulated a $4.8 million debt to the Diocese and the parish is no longer able to cover the financial shortfall caused by the low enrollment numbers.

Eagles Up! November 13th shipment

84 care packages to the deployed troops Postal cost for shipment was $1,749.80

Eagles Up! would like to thank the patriotic volunteers who helped pack and transport care packages to deployed troops. The packages were shipped to military units in Afghanistan, Iraq, Africa, Qatar, Bahrain, South Korea, Kosovo, Du-bai, and Navy ships at sea.

Good Afternoon and Greetings from Bahrain,

The temperature here is a chilly 78 degrees. After six months of 90-130 degree weather, this is a welcome break. At least until we complain how cold it is. I wanted to let you know, we re-ceived your amazing shipment. As usual, it is a welcome treat. It has

been extremely busy here. We look forward to receiving support from home. Jon

Pastor’s Note: The following thank you letter and several other similar letters were recently received by our parish-ioner Toni Seinfeld who coordinates the Eagles Up Program. The U.S. military’s servicewomen and servicemen are deeply grateful for all the gifts and supplies that Eagles Up sends them. Thank you for your kindness toward our military overseas and please continue to keep them in your prayers and to support Eagles Up. The names and spe-cific locations of the authors of these thank you letters are intentionally omitted as a security/safety precaution.
