Seeing and Believing Easter Sunday
Jesus is nowhere visible. Yet today's Gospel tells us that Peter and John "saw and believed." What did they see? Burial shrouds lying on the floor of an empty tomb. Maybe that convinced them that He hadn't been carted off by grave robbers, who usua-lly stole the expen-
sive burial linens and left the corpses behind. But notice the repetition of the word "tomb" - seven times in nine verses. They saw the empty tomb and they believed what He had promised: that God would raise Him on the third day. Chosen to be His "witnesses," today's First Reading tells us, the Apostles were "commissioned...to preach...and testify" to all that they had seen - from His anointing with the Holy Spirit at the Jordan to the empty tomb. More than their own experience, they were instructed in the mysteries of the divine economy, God's saving plan - to know how "all the prophets bear witness" to Him. Now they could "understand the Scripture," could teach us what He had told them - that He was "the Stone which the builders rejected," that today's Psalm prop-hesies His Resurrection and exaltation . We are the children of the apostolic witnesses. That is why we still gather early in the morning on the first day of every week to celebrate this feast of the empty tomb, give thanks for "Christ our life," as to-day's Epistle calls Him. Baptized into His death and Resurrection, we live the heavenly life of the risen Christ, our lives "hidden with Christ in God." We are now His witnesses, too. But we testify to things we cannot see but only belie-ve; we seek in earthly things what is above. We live in memory of the Apostles' witness, like them eating and drinking with the risen Lord at the altar. Sólo un corazón que es capaz de amar puede
entender las palabras de Jesús y la resurrec-
ción. No podemos creer en la resurrección
con la razón, sino desde el amor. Cuando
tenemos en nuestra vida la experiencia de
sentirnos amados por Dios es cuando, real-
mente, estamos en el camino de la acogida,
la comprensión y la ceranía. María Magdale-
na cree en Jesús, en su palabra, y es capaz de
contagiar a todos los sentimientos que siente
al ver el sepulcro vacío. Es ella quien busca
y moviliza a los discípulos.
¿Cuántos de nosotros tenemos esa experi-
encia personal de resurrección? Sin ella,

BÀI ĐỌC 1: Cv 10,34.37-43 Tại nhà ông Cornêliô ở Xêdarê, Thánh Phêrô đã tóm lược sứ vụ của Chúa Giêsu. Cao điểm của sứ vụ này là việc Ngài chịu chết và sống lại. Nhưng như thế chưa phải là hết: việc Chúa sống lại có ảnh hưởng đến mọi người: "Ai tin vào Ngài thì sẽ nhờ danh Ngài mà được ơn tha tội". Vì thế các tông đồ phải làm chứng và loan truyền Tin Mừng ấy.

PHÚC ÂM: Ga 20,1-9 Bằng cách viết rất súc tích với những ý tưởng sâu sắc chứa đựng trong những chi tiết được chọn lựa rất kỹ, Thánh Gioan muốn mô tả hành trình đức tin của 3 nhân vật trong bài tường thuật này: Maria Mađalêna, Phêrô và "người môn đệ kia" (tức tông đồ Gioan). Khi ấy là "sáng sớm khi trời còn tối" : họ vẫn còn ở trong đêm tối chưa hiểu được mầu nhiệm Chúa Giêsu, nhưng đã là lúc sáng sớm rồi, bình minh sắp tỏa sáng. "Chúng tôi không biết người ta đã để Thầy ở đâu" : "địa chỉ" của Chúa Giêsu là một điều được Tin Mừng Ga lưu ý nhiều lần. Ngay từ đầu quyển Tin Mừng, hai môn đệ đầu tiên đã hỏi "Thưa Thầy, Thầy ở đâu ?" (1,38). Đến phần cuối quyển Tin Mừng, câu hỏi "Thầy ở đâu ?" lại được lặp lại. Các môn đệ Chúa Giêsu luôn muốn biết "địa chỉ" của Ngài. Cả 3 nhân vật trong chuyện này đều "chạy" : Mađalêna chạy tìm Simon-Phêrô, ông này cùng với Gioan "cùng chạy, nhưng môn đệ kia chạy nhanh hơn". Họ "chạy" để làm chi ? Để tìm đến "địa chỉ" Chúa Giêsu. Đây là cuộc hành trình của đức tin. Thiên Chúa đã đặt sẵn những dấu chỉ giúp họ tìm, đó là ngôi mộ trống, những khăn vải liệm còn đó được xếp gọn gàng và những lời tiên báo của Thánh Kinh. Nhưng chỉ một mình "môn đệ kia" đã đọc được ý nghĩa của những dấu chỉ ấy nên "đã thấy và đã tin". Gioan đã tìm được "địa chỉ" của Chúa Giêsu. Thực ra, nhiều lần Chúa Giêsu đã ám chỉ đến "địa chỉ" này ("Thầy về cùng Cha Thầy" : xem Ga 7,33-34 8,21 13,33) nhưng các môn đệ vẫn chưa hiểu. Hôm nay Gi-oan đã hiểu : Chúa Giêsu đã sống lại và về cùng Thiên Chúa.
Lăn tảng đá ra khỏi mộ Khi các phụ nữ đang trên đường đến mộ Chúa Giêsu, họ băn khoăn tự hỏi "Ai sẽ lăn tảng đá ra khỏi mộ Chúa đây?" Sau một trận cãi vả với cha mình, một người kia không thèm nói chuyện với cha nữa. Nhà của hai cha con chỉ
cách nhau một quãng ngắn ngủi, nhưng họ không đến thăm nhau và chẳng hề nói với nhau tiếng nào trong nhiều năm dài. Người mẹ thì đã bỏ nhà ra đi từ lâu. Do đó người cha phải sống một mình trong cô độc lẻ loi. Thế giới của ông ngày càng thu hẹp lại, bầu trời của ông ngày càng u ám hơn. Tuy ông chưa chết, nhưng có thể nói ông đang bị chôn trong mồ rồi. Chúng ta ngạc nhiên vì quyền phép Chúa Giêsu đã làm cho kẻ chết sống lại. Nhưng chúng ta có biết rằng chính chúng ta cũng có thể làm được như thế không ? Có thể lắm chứ. Như người con trong câu chuyện trên. Anh có thể lăn tảng đá ra khỏi nấm mộ của cha anh bằng cách đến thăm ông, nói chuyện với ông. Làm như thế tức là lại mở rộng thế giới của ông và lại làm cho bầu trời cuộc sống của ông trở nên tươi sáng. (FM)
Lễ Phục sinh và vấn đề đau khổ Mừng lễ Phục sinh nhưng chúng ta vẫn còn cảm nhận những đau khổ, đau khổ của bản thân và đau khổ của tha nhân. Tuy nhiên một yếu tố mới đã phát sinh. Nó không làm đau khổ biến mất, nhưng mang lại cho đau khổ một ý nghĩa và chiếu lên đau khổ một ánh sáng hy vọng. Mọi sự đã đổi khác rồi, vì Chúa Giêsu vẫn còn sống và nói cho chúng ta nghe những lời bình an. Ngài đã bẻ gảy quyền lực của sự chết và ban cho chúng ta hy vọng sự sống muôn đời. Bởi thế, dù vẫn sống giữa những khổ đau, trong lòng chúng ta đã có một niềm vui âm thầm và một cảm giác bình an sâu lắng. Lạy Chúa, xin ân sủng Chúa bảo vệ niềm hy vọng này, và làm cho niềm hy vọng ấy được thực hiện trọn vẹn trong Nước Chúa trên trời.

Fr. Paul was there for Hector at every step of his journey to college and beyond.
