Monaghan, Co. MonaghanCounty Monaghan is part of the border region of Ireland. It has existed since 1585 when the rulers of Airgíalla agreed to join the Kingdom of Ireland. Following the Irish War of Independence, Monaghan was one of three Ulster counties to join the Irish Free State (now the Republic of Ireland) rather than Northern Ireland.

Despite its small size, Monaghan has made a significant contribution to Ireland’s creative history, as it was the birthplace of the poet and writer Patrick Kavanagh, one of the country’s greatest poets. County Monaghan is also home to a world-class lace industry, producing lace used in the wedding dresses of royalty around the world.

Lough Muckno Leisure Park contains the largest lake in the county and extensive woodland and nature walks. The town also has an award-winning museum displaying Monaghan’s culture and heritage.

The Patrick Kavanagh Centre is a museum and exhibition centre in the town of Inniskeen, commemorating the poet.
