COLLECT Almighty God, your Son Jesus Christ has taught us that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters we do also for him: give us the will to serve others as he was the servant of all, who gave up his life and died for us; yet lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

FIRST READING Jeremiah 28 : 5-9 5 Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord; 6 and the prophet Jeremiah said, ‘Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord fulfil the words that you have prophesied, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord, and all the exiles. 7 But listen now to this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. 8 The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many

countries and great kingdoms. 9 As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.’ Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God.

PSALM 13 At 8am and 9am the congregation join in saying the text in bold. At 10.30am the psalm is sung by the choir 1 How long, O Lord, will you so utterly forget me:

how long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I suffer anguish in my soul,

and be so grieved in my heart day and night: how long shall my enemy triumph over me?

3 Look upon me, O Lord my God, and answer me: lighten my eyes, lest I sleep in death;

4 Lest my enemy say ‘I have prevailed’: lest my foes exult at my overthrow.

5 Yet I put my trust in your unfailing love: O let my heart rejoice in your salvation.

6 And I will make my song to the Lord: because he deals so bountifully with me.

SECOND READING Ephesians 4: 17-32 17 Now this I affirm and insist on in the Lord: you must no longer live as the Gentiles live, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of their ignorance and hardness of heart. 19

They have lost all sensitivity and have abandoned themselves to licentiousness, greedy to practise every kind of impurity. 20 That is not the way you learned Christ! 21 For surely you have heard about him and were taught in him, as truth is in Jesus. 22 You were taught to put away your former way of life, your old self, corrupt and deluded by its lusts, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to clothe yourselves with the new self, created according to the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. 25 So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbours, for we are members of one another. 26 Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and do not make room for the devil. 28 Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labour and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. 29 Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. 31 Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, 32 and be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.

FIRST READING Genesis 22 : 1-14 1 After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, ‘Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ 2 He said, ‘Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt-offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you.’ 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac; he cut the wood for the burnt-offering, and set out and went to the place in the distance that God had shown him. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far away. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, ‘Stay here with the donkey; the boy and I will go over there; we will worship, and then we will come back to you.’ 6

Abraham took the wood of the burnt-offering and laid it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together. 7 Isaac said to his father Abraham, ‘Father!’ And he said, ‘Here I am, my son.’ He said, ‘The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for a burnt-offering?’ 8 Abraham said, ‘God himself will provide the lamb for a burnt-offering, my son.’ So the two of them walked on together. 9 When they came to the place that God had shown him, Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order. He bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, and said, ‘Abraham, Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ 12 He said, ‘Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.’ 13 And Abraham looked up and saw a ram, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt-offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place ‘The Lord will provide’; as it is said to this day, ‘On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.’ Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God.

PSALM 27: 1, 4, 13-14

Please sing the response after the cantor, then as indicated.

The Lord is my light and my help; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; before whom shall I shrink? Response

There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. Response

I am sure I shall see the Lord’s goodness in the land of the living. Hope in him, hold firm and take heart, hope in the Lord. Response

SECOND READING Romans 6 : 12-23 12 Therefore, do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. 13 No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. 14

For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. 15 What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, 18 and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. 19 I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification. 20 When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. 22 But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Hear the word of the Lord: thanks be to God

HYMN 1: AWAKE MY SOUL Text: Thomas Ken (1637-1711) alt. Australian Hymn Book 469

2

Glory to thee who safe has kept and hast refreshed me while I slept; grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake I may of endless light partake.

4

Direct, control, suggest, this day all I design or do or say, that all my powers, with all their might, in thy sole glory may unite.

3

Lord, I my vows to thee renew; disperse my sin as morning dew; guard my first springs of thought and will, and with thyself my spirit fill.

5

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow, praise him, all creatures here below, praise him above, ye heavenly host, praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

HYMN 2: WE HAVE A GOSPEL TO PROCLAIM Edward Joseph Burns (b.1938) alt. Together in Song 245 Reproduced with permission

2

Tell of his birth at Bethlehem not in a royal house or hall but in a stable dark and dim, the Word made flesh, a light for all.

3

Tell of his death at Calvary, hated by those he came to save, in lonely suffering on the cross, for all he loved his life he gave.

12

4

Tell of that glorious Easter morn; empty the tomb, for he was free: he broke the power of death and hell that we might share his victory.

5

Tell of his reign at God’s right hand, by all creation glorified. He sends his Spirit on his church to live for him, the Lamb who died.

6

Now we rejoice to name him King: Jesus is Lord of all the earth. This gospel-message we proclaim: we sing his story, tell his worth.

HYMN 3: THERE’S A SPIRIT IN THE AIR Brian Arthur Wren (b.1936) Together in Song 414 Reproduced with permission

2

Lose your shyness, find your tongue, tell the world what God has done: God in Christ has come to stay. Live tomorrow’s life today.

5

When a stranger’s not alone, where the homeless find a home, praise the love that Christ revealed, living, working in our world.

3

When believers break the bread, when a hungry child is fed, praise the love that Christ revealed, living, working in our world.

6

May the Spirit fill our praise, guide our thoughts and change our ways: God in Christ has come to stay. Live tomorrow’s life today.

4

Still the Spirit gives us light, seeing wrong and setting right: God in Christ has come to stay. Live tomorrow’s life today.

7

There’s a Spirit in the air, calling people everywhere: ‘Praise the love that Christ revealed, living, working in our world.’

13

HYMN 4: LORD OF CREATION Jack Copley Winslow (1882-1974) alt. Together in Song 626 Reproduced with permission

2

Lord of all power, I give you my will, in joyful obedience your tasks to fulfill. Your bondage is freedom; your service is song; and, held in your keeping, my weakness is strong.

4

Lord of all bounty, I give you my heart; I praise and adore you for all you impart, your love to inspire me, your counsel to guide, your presence to shield me, whatever betide.

3

Lord of all wisdom, I give you my mind: rich truth that surpasses our knowledge to find, what eye has not seen and what ear has not heard is taught by your Spirit and shines from your word.

5

Lord of all being, I give you my all; if ever I leave you, I stumble and fall; but, led in your service your word to obey, I’ll walk in your freedom to the end of the way.

14

HYMN 5: TAKE UP THY CROSS Charles Everest (1814-77) alt. New English Hymnal 76

2

Take up thy cross; let not its weight fill thy weak spirit with alarm; his strength shall bear thy spirit up, and brace thy heart, and nerve thine arm.

4

Take up thy cross then in his strength, and calmly every danger brave; ’Twill guide thee to a better home, and lead to victory o’er the grave.

3

Take up thy cross; nor heed the shame, nor let thy foolish pride rebel; the Lord for thee the Cross endured, to save thy soul from death and hell.

5

Take up thy cross, and follow Christ, nor think till death to lay it down; for only they who bear the cross may hope to wear the glorious crown.

HYMN 6: DRAW NIGH AND TAKE THE BODY OF THE LORD Text: tr. John Mason Neale (1818-66) alt. Ancient & Modern 2013 441

2

Saved by that body and that holy blood, with souls refreshed, we render thanks to God.

4

Offered was he for greatest and for least, himself the victim, and himself the priest.

3

Salvation’s giver, Christ, the only Son, by his dear cross and blood the victory won.

5

Approach ye then with faithful hearts sincere, and take the pledges of salvation here.

HYMN 7: A MIGHTY FORTRESS Martin Luther (1483-1546) tr. various sources Lutheran Worship 297 alt. (New English Hymnal 444) Reproduced with permission

2

No strength of ours can match his might. We should be lost, rejected. But now a champion comes to fight, whom God himself elected. You ask who may this be? The Lord of Hosts is he, Christ Jesus, mighty Lord, God’s only Son adored. He holds the field victorious.

3 God’s word forever shall abide, no thanks to foes, who fear it; for God himself fights by our side with weapons of the Spirit. Were they to cause distress, take all that we possess, though life be wrenched away, they cannot win the day. The Kingdom’s ours for ever!
