A HUMBLE KING Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 9, 2017
Like a tonal center in music, the note to which we keep
returning in today’s readings is humility. We wait in joyful
expectation for the coming of our Lord as King. But what
we are told to expect and rejoice over is a meek and hum-
ble king, riding on an ass. Not horses or chariots of the
great and mighty, but a humble beast carries the Ruler
whose dominion stretches “from the River to the ends of
the earth” (Zechariah 9:10). This King comes to banish the
tools of the warrior and bring peace. No wonder that a
weary world rejoices and gives thanks to God! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

“Rejoice because after I destroy the land I will bring you home.” That is a paraphrase of the last couple of
chapters from the Prophet Zechariah. Imagine for a second that conversation. The prophet prophesies doom and
destruction, “But wait there’s more.” Rejoice now as you prepare for the destruction because there will come a time
of return. Doom and destruction, in the future for you, then followed by return, so don’t worry now, instead rejoice.
Aren’t there many, many things that can cause us to despair, sometimes they are worthy of the despair. And
the Lord God through the mouth tells us to rejoice. And not just rejoice, but to rejoice heartily and to shout with joy.
This last week we celebrated the Fourth of July. We took days off and we closed banks, and we had barbeques and
we shot fireworks. I bet there was a little inconvenience. I bet there were moments of regret and looking back, and
shame in war and death and destruction. And thankfulness for those who lost their lives so that we could be free. I
will bet that every military family breathed prayers of safety and gratitude.
We can be both filled with dread and gloom, and rejoicing and joy. We can be people living a time that is
anything but just with eyes focused on the land of eternal justice.

Thinking about Separation or Divorce? — Is your mar-
riage or that of a relative or friend struggling or even head-
ing for divorce? Do you know how to save that mar-
riage? Or do you feel helpless? Retrouvaille is designed to
help troubled marriages regain their health. It helps
spouses uncover or re-awaken the love, trust, and commit-
ment that originally brought them together. The program is
highly successful in saving hurting marriages, even bring-
ing reconciliation to couples who have already separated or
divorced. For confidential information about or to register
for the August program beginning with a weekend
on August 25-27 call Paul or Patty Miguel at 806-420-
