PASTOR’S PAGEPASTOR’S PAGEPASTOR’S PAGEPASTOR’S PAGE Every Wednesday night at confirmation class we begin by checking
in with each other. During our check-in time everyone has the
opportunity to share what we call a “God-Sighting.” A “God-Sighting” is
exactly what it sounds like. It is a story about how we saw God somehow
during the week. Sometimes a “God-Sighting” is when someone saw one
student help out another student at school or when they saw a cross
necklace that someone was wearing.
“God-Sightings” look different for each of us because we all
experience God’s presence in our lives in unique ways and we all see God
differently. Some people see God in creation when they see a beautiful
sunset or go on a peaceful walk. Some people experience God’s presence
in their lives through the relationships that they have with other people.
Some people experience God through music, literature, scripture, and
prayer.
On Ash Wednesday, we begin the church season of Lent. It is the
beginning of our days of preparation for Easter. In the early church, Lent
was a time when new believers prepared for their baptisms that they
would receive at Easter. As part of their final preparations for their
baptism, they would spend these days of Lent leaving behind all of those
things that could get in the way of their relationships with God. They
fasted, prayed, and spent time in service to the poor. As these new
believers learned about the faith and practiced living it out, the rest of
the Christian community joined them.
Every Lent, we too are given these days of preparation. These
days of Lent are set apart so that we can remember again what it means
to be baptized. Some of us do this by getting rid of the distractions in our
lives like turning off the TV, or putting down our phones, or disconnecting
the internet so we can be more aware of God’s presence in our lives.
Some of us give up certain foods so that every time we think we need to
eat that food, we can be reminded of how much we need God in our lives.
Some of us take up something new in Lent like exercising, reading,
visiting the lonely, donating to a charity, or volunteering as a way to
strengthen our relationship with God.
We do these things during Lent so that we can be more aware of
God’s presence in our lives. You could say that Lent is a time for us to
have “God-Sightings” as we prepare for Easter. It is a time to experience
God through creation, relationships, music, literature, scripture, and
prayer.
How do you experience God? What are your “God-Sightings”? May
you experience God in familiar and new ways during this season of Lent!

Love, love, love, love…
The Gospel in a word is Love.
These are first words to a song I learned as a young adult. It’s a lovely song that
you can sing as a round.
In Sunday School we have been learning about Jesus’ life as an adult, after
learning about the dramatic events of his birth.
We learned about John the Baptist and how he baptized Jesus (and ate bugs).
We learned about Jesus’ first miracle at Cana, and that Jesus cares about the
problems in our lives. In February, we are going to be learning about the events
that led up to Jesus’ death and resurrection: the Lenten stories.
Love your neighbor as your brother,
Love, love, love.
One thing that is clear from Jesus’ interactions with the people he met, is that
he cared for them. He loved them. Even when they didn’t understand him, or
want to follow him and his way, or when they exasperated him. He loved them.
What would it look like if we would choose to act lovingly toward the
people we encounter in our lives? If we would choose to speak lovingly?
I say “choose to act” because it sometimes seems impossible to feel love toward
some people and some situations. So what if we go beyond feelings, and
choose to act in loving ways toward people? What if we chose to speak lovingly,
or at least kindly? What if we choose to pray for people that irritate us or don’t
agree with us? What about those who might even be considered our enemies?
Choosing to act and speak and pray in love may
not change things the way we want, but it will
change us. It is a lot harder to hate people
when we are praying for their well-being and
their souls. Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them”
as he was dying on the cross. That is choosing to
love. We have that choice before us, too.

Hopeful for a Visit in March – Help Needed Plans are underway for Pastor Rafael and his
daughters – Aurora, Daniela and Gabriella – to come for a visit to St. Peter March 18th to March 25th.
We are in the process of preparing letters of invitation for the family and for the U.S. Embassy of El
Salvador in hopes that they will be granted visas so they are able to come to the United States. Pastor
Rafael is preparing the necessary paper work on his end. Please pray for visas to be granted so that
they may come. This visit will be a gift to the family and part of their healing process following the
death of Pastor Norma.
Part of the planning for their visit will require help from St. Peter folks. If you are interested in
being part of the team that plans, prepares and helps with their visit, please let Carol Witt know. Once
we know the girls have their visas, then the team will get busy planning and preparing. It would be
great to have some youth on the team to help plan activities for the girls who are ages 14, 13 and 12.
Translators will be needed, also.
If all goes well, the time of their visit will include Palm Sunday and most of Holy Week. On
Friday, March 25 (Good Friday) Pastor Rafael and the girls will travel to be with the congregation of
Cross of Life in Brookfield, the sister parish of Cordero de Dios. This was Pastor Norma’s parish and
now Pastor Rafael is their pastor in addition to Apostles of Christ.
El Salvador Students Start a New School Year Elementary through high school aged students
return to school on January 18th. University students start in early February. There is still an
opportunity to become a sponsor of an El Salvador student. If you are interested, please contact one of
the El Salvador Team members.
The next El Salvador Team meeting will be on Thursday, February 4th at 6:30pm. We
welcome your presence and interest.

In October of 2015, Connie Meyer, Lowell Stevenson, Pam Wilhelm, Mike Wilhelm and Pastor
Kristin attended a gathering hosted by the Greater Milwaukee Synod and the ELCA
Churchwide Office to learn about and consider entering into a two year program called
Building Missional Capacity for Sustainability.
I am guessing that you are thinking the same thought as the people who attended the
gathering, “What does that mean?” (Note that St. Peter was one of ten congregations in our
synod of 100 plus congregation invited to participate). So for starters, this is an excerpt from
the handouts given to us that evening…
Building Missional Capacity for Sustainability is a four weekend series that develops a
vision and plan for growing the leadership and missional capacity of the congregation through
a focus on discipleship, stewardship, community relationships, and financial development.
The process is organic in that each congregation develops an approach to fit their context and
culture. With experienced facilitators/mentors equipping others through workshops and
accompanying the congregational team, a cluster of 5-8 congregations journey together for up
to two years. Each congregation has a team of four to six people.
Several congregational disciplines are addressed through readings, educational content,
learning activities, and conversation. Specific outcomes are determined by the team in each
congregation and have implications for engaging local neighborhoods, spiritual renewal,
adaptive leadership, missional growth, regular giving, new funding sources, mission
interpretation, and developing team-based approaches to ministry.
The basic objectives of Building Missional Capacity for Sustainability are:
• Build a foundation for growing good disciples, leaders, and stewards of all ages to
understand a missional and sustainable approach to ministry.
• Ignite personal spiritual growth while creating enthusiasm for being an evangelizing
and missional congregation.
• Equip congregational leaders in developing a vision and plan for living God’s call to
ministry, strengthen year round ministry, and nurture financial sustainability.
• Accompany leaders in planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating ministry,
including an invitation for an annual financial response.
• Foster stronger relationships within and among communities of faith as part of a
common faith and mission.
Twelve Reasons for Building Missional Capacity
1. Learn missional disciplines for growing and sustaining effective ministry.
2. Develop a vision and plan for your congregation.
3. Experience a team-based approach to ministry in partnership with other
congregations.

4. Move from paying the bills to a living the mission approach to ministry.
5. Learn how to grow healthy disciples, leaders, and stewards.
6. Strengthen relationships and outreach within your community and neighborhoods.
7. Identify and monitor key growth indicators for your congregation.
8. Learn effective approaches to funding current and future ministry.
9. Learn current theology and thinking for a missional approach to ministry.
10. Develop a missional income and spending plan.
11. Build and sustain vitality for ministry.
12. Benefit from the experience and resources of ministries across the church.
After attending the event this opportunity was discussed at Mutual Ministry and it was
decided to make a recommendation to the St. Peter Church Council that we move forward
with this opportunity at a cost of $500.00 for the two year program. Pam Wilhelm and Pastor
Kristin presented the program at the December council meeting and the council approved the
expense and approved the development of a Building Missional Capacity for Sustainability
Team.
So what are the next steps?
• Gather a team of members who are committed gather, grow, and share with the
congregation the information and tools we learn at the four workshops over a two year
period.
• Use the gifts of the St. Peter membership to accomplish the tasks required by our
assigned ministry coach.
• Use the resources and tools learned in the workshops to help plan and grow ministries
at St. Peter.
• Communicate, Communicate, Communicate.
• Pray, Listen, Pray, and Listen.
This is a calling from God to have St. Peter intentionally plan for the future.
What is church going to look like in years to come? How do we help future generations grow
in their faith in God? How are we going to financially and physically sustain our current
ministries and grow ministries? Who will we be in 5 years? 10 years? Beyond? What are
the opportunities for change? What are the risks if we do not change? What are our core
values? Who are we at 2104 Geele Avenue?
Please hold Pastor Kristin, Faith Formation Coordinator Janet Blank, the Sustainability
Team (members yet to be determined), the Church Council, and you the membership of St.
Peter in your prayers.
Pray and listen to what God is calling us to do and be. Stay tuned.

SCIO is having a Casino Night Fundraiser (with the Kiel Lions Club) at the Elks
Club on February 20th! See Kevin Witt for details so you can attend. Additional
information will be made available.
Ask the question: “Would Sheboygan County Interfaith Organization (SCIO) be missed by
anyone in the Sheboygan Community if the congregation of St. Peter didn’t participate in this
Social Justice Ministry?” The answer is a resounding yes! To the congregation of St.
Peter, your generous support in 2015 allowed SCIO to be a unique and vital partner in the
on-going mission to improve lives in Sheboygan County. In 2016, SCIO will be able to
continue educating, to advocate for social justice, and to improve the quality of life for
individuals in Sheboygan, and Sheboygan County.
This past year was terrific for SCIO. Provided are a few of the accomplishments:
• Collaborated with St. Peter Lutheran Church in “God’s Work, Our Hands”
• Acquired funding for new laptops and I-pads
• Completed painting, lighting and floor work in the recently renovated kitchen
• Installed a new sign outside of Bridgeway (13th and Geele) thanks to a generous donor
• Hired a full time Case Manager for Bridgeway and Beyond programming
• Bridgeway and Trisha’s House: 15 mothers and 30 children were residents
• Farmers Market: 90+ vendors participated, and awareness and visibility was increased
• Supervised Visitation Program: 25 Parents utilized the to spend time with their children
• Ireland Trip Raffle: The 2nd annual was held
• A Home for the Holidays: The 1st annual fundraiser was held at the Castino Mansion
• Spring Luncheon: This tradition continues to celebrate mothers - held at Pine Hills
Through the dedicated, and great work of the entire organization SCIO is very much a
leader in the ongoing effort to educate and advocate for social justice throughout Sheboygan
County. There is so much more work that needs to be done, but we need YOU to
Volunteer. How can you help?
• Videographer – To create short videos highlighting SCIO programs
• Meal Sharing – Bring a meal to cook at Bridgeway in their kitchen. Ask for details.
• Minor Building Maintenance, Snow Removal, and Minor Landscaping
Provide Donations (100% tax deductible):
• Toilet paper, dish soap, dishwasher soap & laundry soap

Do you miss attending a church service because you're gone on vacation, the weather is
bad, or as a result of other important activities such as sporting events, family events,
sickness or other equally important reasons? If any of these things happen, and
believe me they happen to Cindy and I at least 10 plus times a year, you may ask if
your financial gifts to the church are also missed?
Many of you say, yes but you do make them up at a later time. For that, the church is
grateful. However, the church's financial obligations are regular and cannot always
wait until that make up happens. Staff depends on their salaries to be paid regularly,
creditors will charge excess penalties if not paid at times required, or ministries may
not happen if funds are not available at the time the ministry is most needed.
Cindy and I understand this as an issue and with the help of electronic banking, have
become regular givers even when we are absent. What we have done, through our
online banking system with our financial institution, is set up St. Peter as a bill. We
then request it pay St. Peter on a re-occurring (monthly) basis. The online banking
system then pays St. Peter from our checking account and I do not have to do a thing,
short of making sure the funds are available at the time of payment. If we wish, we
are able to adjust the payment, payment date or stop a payment at anytime, all from
the comfort of my computer.
All financial institutions currently offer online banking. We have taken advantage of
this benefit for a number of years, for many different reasons. One of biggest reasons
is that we are often not available when a bill needs to be paid. This has solved that
issue. Among other reasons is a great reduction is check writing, we can bank from
any place in the world where internet is available, and it is very secure. Most allow for
online deposits as well as transfers of funds. You can also check as often as you would
like on account balances, what items have cleared, and electronic deposits (pay checks,
Social Security, etc).
If you are currently using online banking and you have not set up St. Peter as a biller,
I strongly suggest you consider it. If you need assistance either contact your financial
institution and ask for assistance, or contact me and I will assist. For those who
currently give electronically, we thank you.
We again thank all who regularly give to St. Peter the gifts God has bestowed on each
of us. Our ministry, which has benefited so many, can only flourish.

Treasurer
