From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners: I just love Mickey Mouse! A few years ago, I bought one of those large stuffed toys of the iconic Mouse and gave it to my nephew for Christmas. I fell in love with the whole Disney cartoon series when I was just a young child. So… once I got back home from the Christmas break, I got the same size (Large) stuffed Mickey for myself. It now sits prominently in my bedroom. The Disney brand and legacy have been time-tested and stand as one of the highest caliber family-friendly businesses in the world. It makes me think of the two brothers who first founded the animation company years ago, and the corporate soul and leader of the brand, Walt Disney himself. He was a man who demanded loyalty and set the moral/ethical bar pretty high and expected everyone who worked for him to strive for the highest level of excellence. He was a great man, a talented visionary, and an outstanding leader. There is a rather famous story of two of his cartoonists who developed a naughty version of the relationship between Mickey & Minnie Mouse for in-house humor. Walt came by for one of his daily strolls through the shop. When Walt discovered the cartoon work, he was livid. He had both animators fired that day. If anyone ever doubted what Walt Disney would or would not tolerate in his animation department, Walt certainly had drawn the line in the sand that day. Yet, Walt… did have his dark and unredeemed side as well. You see, Walt always thought of himself, and his company for that matter, as having nothing less than a “squeaky clean” reputation. This was the way Walt liked to see and understand himself. This became the legendary Disney brand - clean, always creative and on the cutting edge of animation, and famously family friendly. However, what Walt did not want you to see was the unredeemed part of his personality. In 1941, after multiple cinema successes, and after having created the elaborate Disney Studios in California, most of his animators went on strike. Walt took it personally and felt betrayed by his best and most trusted workers. Walt was so furious that he vowed - publicly and privately - to crush them. Walt was so accustomed to being loved and adored by fans from around the world. Now, many of his own Disney family… hated him. In addition, Walt prided himself in being the “squeaky clean” image for his company and theme parks. Yet, at the same time, Walt was always a heavy smoker, Cont’d p. 2

Cont’d from p. 1 and he liked to drink throughout most of his life. Walt could be the most delightful and fun-loving soul one moment, and could easily explode with a nasty temper if things were not done the way he wanted them. There was this great… Disconnect… between what Walt wanted to be… and the reality of his…humanness… his own brokenness. Isn’t that equally true for us, as well? When we fill out applications and job resumes… we get tremendous insight into who we “want” to be. Some of those documents we compose sound more like one of the movie scripts for the Marvel Comics Super-Hero series. I mean, you would think that some of us could stop a locomotive with our bare hands, or leap to the top of a sky-scrapper in a single bound. Some may even go as far as to have an “S” tattooed to their chest. We work hard to convince ourselves. We fool ourselves. There is a great… Disconnect… between reality and our own hopes and dreams. Lent is the time to seek Redemption. Lent is the “Season of Renewal” where we turn away from pride, arrogance, and ego. All of us feel the need to be people of greater personal integrity, the need to shine more light… in the midst of our own personal darkness. Walt Disney was beloved by his television and theme park family. However, he did have his shadow side that was in desperate need of Redemption. As Christ helped the woman at the well to better understand herself and be reconciled with her past, so too will Christ the Redeemer give us his forgiveness for our sins and shortcomings. He will wipe away our transgressions and give us the refreshing “Living Water” that makes us clean once again, and gives us new life. Know that I will pray for our parishioners’ personal and family renewal throughout this Holy Lenten Season; that this time of conversion at St. Peter the Apostle… will never be… a “Mickey Mouse Operation!” Fr. Richard

Queridos Feligreses: ¡Realmente yo amo a Mickey Mouse!
