FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

A LIFE GIVEN FREELY

Gospel: John 10:11-18

“No one takes my life from me; I lay it down freely”

The Pharisees, to whom this teaching is directed, recog-nize themselves in the image of the hired hand who abandons the sheep when danger is imminent. It is no a flattering image, which is one of the reasons they are eager to see Jesus killed. But Jesus warns them here and elsewhere that his death, the one thing they both agree on, will come on his terms, at the chosen hour, for his Father’s purposes. Their role in this matter is decidedly peripheral. Even while offering us the gentle and pastoral metaphor of the good shepherd, Jesus has his gaze fixed on the horizon and the cross. We might paint him with the lost sheep draped around his neck, a kindly smile at his lips. But in John’s portrayal of Jesus, being the good shepherd means countering the wolf and be-ing torn to pieces. For the sake of those who are his own in the world, Jesus has come to be glorified through this very act.

Questions for Reflection

* What are the ”rejected cornerstone” in your life? Why were they rejected , and what made their value apparent?

* Using John’s understanding of “world” as any athin opposed to the light of Christ, what belongs to the “world” that is an obstacle to your faith today?

* Do you like John’s Gospel the most or the least of the four Gospels? What makes you feel differently about it?

Action Response

Examine the current cornerstone of your daily life. Does it support or contradict the message of faith? Observe how it functions in your life for a few days, and make a discernment on its value to our life as a Christian.

EASTER SEASON The word "Easter" comes from Old English, meaning simply the "East." The sun which rises in the East, bring-ing light, warmth and hope, is a symbol for the Christian of the rising Christ, who is the true Light of the world. The Paschal Candle is a central symbol of this divine light, which is Christ. It is kept near the ambo throughout Easter Time and lit for all liturgical celebrations. The Easter Season ends with Pentecost Sunday.

Sacraments received during this Holy Easter Season

As a parish family we are always blessed and privileged to witness the reception of Sacraments. On Sunday, April 15, thirty-eight candidates received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Every time we celebrate the Sacra-

ments of the Church it is an opportunity for each of the Baptized to reflect on how we allow our lives to be nourished and strengthen through the Sacraments. May all of us allow the gifts of the Holy Spirit to enrich our

lives as we continue our faith journey. May these candidates always rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
