FROM THE PASTOR
Praised be Jesus Christ!
I mentioned in my homily this past Sunday that the feast of the Epiphany refers to the “manifestation” of Christ—particularly the manifestation of his Divine Nature which remains active though unseen under the veil of his humanity.
The first “manifestation” that we celebrate is that one by which the infant Christ was manifested to the wise men in their visit to the Holy Family while stil l at Bethlehem. They come on bended knee, bearing gifts not merely in celebration of some normal human birth, nor even of some earthly king. Rather they come to adore the birth of a king whose nativity was foretold in the stars because his kingdom is not of this world! Their veneration itself is an implicit manifestation of the divine glory of the one who is Emmanuel—God with us.
This manifestation at Bethlehem is the principle one celebrated in Latin Rite Catholic churches on the Feast of Epiphany, as we saw in the readings last week.
But the texts of the Epiphany liturgies mention two other “manifestations” of Christ’s divinity which are also acknowledged and celebrated in this feast in more subtle ways.
The Baptism of the Lord (which we commemorate this Sunday) is also an Epiphany feast. In Eastern Catholic churches, this event actually has pride of place over and above the visit of the Magi. Christ enters the waters of the Jordan River to be baptized by John, not because he has any trace of sin to be forgiven, but in order to establish the pattern and power of Christian baptism to come. When he emerges from the water the voice of the Father is heard: “This is my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased,” and the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove to hover over the waters.
In other words, all three persons of the Blessed Trinity are manifested in some way, showing that Christ is not merely another prophet of Israel, but instead the Divine and Eternal Son of the Father.
Finally, and most interestingly, the feast of the Epiphany also recalls the event of Christ’s first miracle at the wedding feast of Cana when Our Lord, at the request of the Blessed Virgin, changed water into wine. This miracle, along with all of the many more to follow, gives visible proof and credibility to Christ’s ministry and teaching, showing that he is exactly whom he claims to be: True God and true man.
All three of these manifestations of Christ are mentioned in the ancient (5th century) Epiphany hymn which is sung at Vespers of Epiphany. Notice how after an opening verse about King Herod’s envy, each of the following stanzas mentions one of the three “manifestations” which are commemorated at Epiphany.
Why, impious Herod, vainly fear that Christ the Savior cometh here? He takes no earthly realms away
Who gives the crown that lasts for aye
To greet His birth the Wise Men went, led by the star before them sent;
called on by light, towards Light they pressed, and by their gifts their God confessed.
In holy Jordan’s purest wave the heavenly Lamb vouchsafed to lave; That He, to whom was sin unknown,
might cleanse His people from their own.
New miracle of power divine! The water reddens into wine:
He spake the word: and poured the wave in other streams than nature gave.
All glory, Lord, to Thee we pay Thine Epiphany today;
all glory as is ever meet, to Father and to Paraclete. Amen.
In the hearts of Jesus and Mary,
Father Peter Van Lieshout
