Twenty sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C)-Luke 16:19-31

J esus said to the Pharisees: ‘There was a rich man who used to dress in purple and fine linen and feast magnificently every day. And at his gate there lay a poor man called Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to fill himself with the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. Dogs even came and licked his sores. Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. ‘In his torment in Hades he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus in his bosom. So he cried out, “Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames,” “My son,” Abraham replied, “remember that during your life good things came your way, just as bad things came the way of Lazarus. Now he is being comforted here while you are in agony. But that is not all: between us and you a great gulf has been fixed, to stop anyone, if he wanted to, crossing from our side to yours, to stop any crossing from your side to ours.” ‘The rich man replied, “Father, I beg you then to send Lazarus to my father’s house, since I have five brothers, to give them warning so that they do not come to his place of torment too.” “They have Moses and the prophets,” said Abraham, “let them listen to them.” “Ah no, father Abraham,” said the rich man, “but if someone comes to them from the dead, they will repent.” Then Abraham said to him, “If they will not listen either to Moses or to the prophets, they will not be con-vinced even if someone should rise from the dead.” ‘

1. Spend some time quietly reading and rereading the passage, noting the words/ phrases that draw your attention. 2. Imagine the scene – place yourself in the story. Note where you are, what are your thoughts, feelings…? 3. What changes in your life style might Jesus be inviting you to make? 4. What prayer for coming week does this prompt?

It doesn’t matter whether you’re already a Catholic or not. Parish Events

Walking Group The next walk will be on 16th October. Details next week.

HARVEST SUNDAY APPEAL IT ISN’T GOING AWAY....... the poverty of significant numbers in our extended commu-nity..... Indeed (as the following figures will show) the need for FOODBANKS and The WELLSPRING is more desperate than ever: 3.6m UK households are at risk of slipping into poverty as a result of spiralling living costs, shrinking incomes and welfare benefit reforms. Britain's biggest food-bank network, the Trussell Trust charity has doubled the number of emergency food parcels issued over the past year, (now 1000,000) and is opening new food banks at the rate of two a week

Our reaction is hopefully going to be a GYNORMOUS Harvest Response next Sunday 2nd October The Well Spring and Stockport Foodbank are being stretched to the limit and we have received a very touching appeal from both for support in alleviating the plight of increasing numbers of local people in our community. If each one of us could bring a tin or a packet to mass next week, between us we could create a super- sized harvest basket that would be of real and practical benefit to our brothers and sisters in need. If we all did our bit, we could put the ’BUMPER’’ into this special harvest appeal. PLEASE look at the display in the porch. It will inform you of what is most needed. A little warning: Please do NOT bring Pasta, beans, soup or tea. You can guess why! There will be boxes in the porch for all contributions. Thank You for your kind support.
