Dear Members of the College Community,

Assessment schedules for Years 7-11 were distributed earlier this term. The assessment summary provides an overview to assist students and their parents to forward plan.

Our Homework Club meets each Wednesday afternoon in the ISC creating the opportunity for students to have guided support (and some afternoon tea!) with assessments and homework.

Parent Teacher Interviews take place Tuesday 28 March. New staff (myself included) are particularly looking forward to meeting parents and creating strong communication to assist student understanding and learning.

Year 12 are to be commended on the way they have approached their Half Yearly Examinations. I hope their results reflect their recent positive efforts.

As the school year progresses sometimes assessment tasks can begin to overwhelm. I encourage all students to flag potential problems with their teachers.

A letter outlining participation in external competitions was distributed. While the deadline has passed for most, please contact me directly to explore the possibility of late sign up.

I thank the students, staff and parents for the supportive welcome I’ve received to St Peter’s. It is truly the premier academic and pastoral school in the region and beyond. I consider myself honoured and lucky to work here.

Year 5 News

Year 5 have had a wonderfully busy start to 2017! The highlight of these first few weeks has been the Kitchen Garden program, which has seen student’s plant vegetables, maintain the garden and cook their produce. The level of cooperation in the kitchen has been fantastic to witness, with all students getting in and having a go. Our pizza, pasta, rice paper rolls, lamingtons and scones have been thoroughly enjoyed by all!

In mathematics, students have been busy learning about length, area and perimeter, and applying these concepts to real life activities. They have been designing an open area community space, considering length, area, perimeter, drawing to scale, converting measurements and working cooperatively in a group.

In science, we have been learning about adaptations to plants and animals to increase their survival in a desert. We have conducted an experiment to determine whether the surface area effects the rate at which water is evaporated from leaves and will next attempt to discover if the surface area of animals’ ears has an impact on them keeping cool in the desert. Year 5 have loved the hands on component of this unit!

Year 7 Camp

THE BERRY SPORT AND RECREATION CENTRE Year 7 had an enjoyable camp at the Berry Sport and Recreation Centre. The centre is two and a half hours north of Broulee and was once a dairy farm and a home for male wards of the state. It is now run by the NSW office of Sport and has exceptional facilities, highly competent staff and beautiful surrounds. During the three days, students climbed vertical challenges and gained skills in kayaking, orienteering and archery. They were challenged with a dark maze, initiative activities and learnt how to work as a team. In the evening, students had fun building a bonfire, making damper and cooking marsh mallows. The camp was a great success.

HSIE Department News As is the case in every term, students have been learning through a variety of means in their HSIE classes. Year 7 History have been investigating the ancient past and as part of this conducted a Broulee Canoe Tree Site Study to gather and evaluate historical information. They will begin their study of Ancient Egypt soon, so please watch out for documentaries related to this topic as these can really extend students understanding of the ancient world.

Year 9 History students are finishing a history unit on the Movement of Peoples. One aspect of this is the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and students reproduced a small part of the floor plan of a slave ship and placed themselves in it. This is an excellent example of how the history outcome of empathy can be developed.

Year 8 Geography students served to highlight issues of inequality arising in our world. They chose and researched issues like World Hunger, Safe Water Shortage, Equal Opportunities for Women, World Health and Education for All. Students presented the context of the issue, current statistics, ways the country and other countries are attempting to assist, and any aid offered by NGOs and TNCs. Presentations were accompanied by graphs, diagrams, photos, videos and maps. These 5 minute speeches highlighted the inequalities that exist in our world and how our global community is attempting to rectify them. Some presentations were very confronting and stirred emotions and greater awareness of how fortunate we are in Australia.

Year 10 Geography has just completed their major research task on Coastal Management. This involved two field trips to North Broulee Beach to allow students to take photographs of both the physical geography and the human impact evident on this section of coastline. Their findings were presented in a report style document which included a recommendation for future management strategies.

Our Years 9&10 Commerce class has completed their first assessment task. This required them to research several current legal cases as well as to analyse the impact of a recent significant change to a law. A wide variety of interesting cases was examined and students have gained valuable insights into the way our legal system operates. Our senior students have been studying a variety of courses: Business Studies, Ancient & Modern History, Geography & Legal Studies. Those in Year 12 are in the midst of exam fever and we wish them all the best. Year 11 students have settled in well and I have been very pleased with their application to courses thus far. Thanks to the South Coast History Society, students in Years 9&10 and those studying History in Years 11&12 received a copy of the Recollections magazines which highlights aspects of our local history. It is certainly an interesting read and highly recommended. We thank the Society for providing our students with this valuable resource.

There are many more exciting learning experiences planned for our HSIE students and the teaching team of Mr Fraser, Mr Nicholls, Ms Hofman, Mr Fuller and myself are looking forward to sharing and facilitating these in the coming weeks and term. Mrs Anita Berton, Head of HSIE

Paris in SPRING!!!

Seven lucky students, one brave parent who signed up for our first ever college excursion to France and Mme Woolnough are counting down the days until they fly to Paris! Our school is joining with Mme Winterflood, three students and a parent from Sapphire Coast Anglican College on this exciting adventure of a lifetime. We leave on 2nd April for an amazing trip, which will take us to Paris, the Somme battlefields, Mont St Michel on the north west coast and the castles of the Loire Valley. In Paris some of our activities will include visiting incredible works of art in the Louvre and the Musee d’Orsee, climbing the Eiffel Tower, cruising the Seine River, shopping on the Champs Elysees, exploring the Catacombs under the city and having fun at Euro Disney! We will be sending lots of photos and messages, so follow our adventure on the school Facebook site if you want to know what we are doing, and perhaps to start dreaming about your own adventure if you choose to join the next trip… For those looking for a global experience closer to home, please see the WEP information in this newsletter regarding hosting exchange students in our own beautiful part of the world. Merci! Mme Woolnough
