Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving are the ways we can simplify our lives and make a little room for God in our daily activities. How is your Lenten Journey going? This is the First Sunday of Lent. Little changes repeated over the 40 days will result in developing a new habit by Easter. In scripture this week we are reminded that the devil will tempt us especially when he discovers we are trying to get closer to God… The Son of God was tempted. We are children of God. Satan wants nothing more that to keep us separated from God for an eternity. It seems almost odd that we can add to our lives by eliminating stuff. Giving from my food shelf to the community food shelf gives me a sense of community and joy in knowing I am helping others. By turning off the TV or video game I gain time to spend talking or playing with family members. By not surfing the internet I gain time to read a good book. By spending a little time in the Adoration Chapel I gain peace and comfort in my walk with Jesus. I hope you signed up on the website bestlentever.com I also hope you are using the books, C/Ds and DVD’s and magazines that are available in the church entry. When you are done with them tell someone else and share with them… Lent is a time when we look at ourselves but it is also a time when we can reach out and help others in a big way… what if a family unplugged all electronics for one evening. Or just 2 hours and spent the time in games or a conversation. Here is an important thought to share as a family: regarding the needs of the family at home we need to say no to some things to be good at family things. Imagine if a family shared with one another: three things they are thankful to God for that happened during the day. Have you ever contemplated the difference between pleasure and happiness? A favorite definition is: pleasure is temporary and personal happiness is what we strive for. Look what I found in my in-basket one day: A priest dies and is waiting in line at the Pearly Gates. Ahead of him is a guy who's dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket and jeans. St. Peter addresses him, "Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you into the Kingdom of Heaven?" The guy replies, "I'm Joe Cohen, taxi driver, from New York." St. Peter consults his list. He smiles and says to the taxi driver, "Take this silken robe and golden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven." Now it's the priest's turn. He stands erect and booms out, "I am Fr. Chuck, pastor of St. Philip’s, Holy Spirit Newman Center, and St. Charles." St. Peter consults his list. He says to Fr. Chuck, "Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven." "Just a minute," said Fr. Chuck, "That man was a taxi driver— Why does he get a silken robe and golden staff?" "Results," shrugged St. Peter. "While you preached, people slept. When he drove, people prayed." It's performance, not position that counts. What will our relationship to God be like at Easter? Will it be the same or will it be different. Jesus is our friend and He wants to be close to us. Blessings and peace on your Lenten journey to Easter… Fr. Chuck

1st Sunday in Lent Greetings, March 5, 2017

God does want to be close to us.

When you are done with them tell someone else and share with them…

Lent is a time when we look at ourselves but it is also a time when we can reach out and help others in a big way… what if a family unplugged all electronics for one evening.

Chuck

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!

Do you know of someone who is ill or homebound that may like a visit from us? We would love to call on them, so please be our eyes and ears so that these folks don’t fall through the cracks! Often times, the only way we are notified of a need is through friends and neighbors of the person who is reluctant to notify us themselves. If you know of someone, call Blake Quick at the Parish Office, 441-4907 and we will arrange for a visit. Thanks to you for caring about your parish family!

Have you ever wanted to own a timeshare? The parish has received a “Point Condo” timeshare from an estate. It is located at Breezy Point Resort near Pequot Lakes Minnesota. Unit number 508, week 38. If you are interested please contact Fr. Chuck or Deacon Kermit for more information.

St. Philip’s extends condolences to the families of LeRoy Merschman, brother of Kenny Merschman, and Judy Haack, mother of Jeff Haack. May they find rest and peace, & may their families find comfort in God’s love.

You can help meet unmet needs with a generous contribution today. Thank you for your support.

Ø Lenten Fish Frys are underway. Join us for the second Fish Fry of the Lenten season on Friday, March 10. You can still sign up to help, if you are interested.

Ø The Diocesan Middle School Youth Rally for students in grades 6 – 8 will be held in Thief River Falls on Sunday, March 19, from 1:00 – 6:00. What a tremendous opportunity for our middle schoolers to meet others from around the diocese as well as to deepen their faith. Contact Youth Minister Luke Alexander for more info.

Ø The final early release day for ISD#31 is Wednesday, March 15. St. Philip’s School will conduct classes all day. However, if your child needs to use district buses to get home, we will need a note from parents to excuse the child at the early time of 1:10. The 7th graders will end their day at St. Philip’s and there will be no afterschool activities at the Middle School that day.

Ø Think back to the 1990s. We’ll be traveling there as part of our 90th Anniversary Celebration on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17.

Ø Remember to drive slowly and cautiously in the parking lot at all times and to avoid parking along the sidewalk during peak traffic times (2:50 – 3:20 PM). Thank you.

Ø Go online to complete your Safe Environment Certification for 2016-2017. If you were certified during the 2015-2016 school year, you need to again be recertified this year. Please go to: www.crookston.org and following the prompts for Safe Environment. [Remember to “refresh” your cache once or twice.] This certification must be done annually and BEFORE you volunteer. PLEASE CHECK YOUR STATUS!
