As you read this I am participating in our annual Deacon retreat. One weekend a year the deacons of our Diocese, and our wives along with the Deacon candidates and their wives, gather together to listen and learn, fellowship and socialize. Our retreat leader this year is Fr. Craig Vasek, who will be talking to us, during this Year of Mercy, about God's Mercy and how we as Deacons can share that mercy with those we serve. Please pray that we will return from our retreat strengthened in our ministry and better able to serve our parishes and our diocese as positive examples of God's mercy. I am excited that our Diocese has seven wonderful deacon candidates, including our very own Robb Naylor from St. Philip's, who are scheduled to be ordained to the Diaconate next June! Once Robb is ordained that will give us two permanent deacons here at St. Philip's. That will be maybe half as many as we could really use here in our parish. There is plenty of work that a deacon could do in our parish to easily keep four deacons busy. I pray that any male member of this church family who is between the ages of thirty and sixty would ask themselves, is God calling me to do more for Him and His church? Is it possible that he is calling me to become a Deacon? The Diocese will be starting a new diaconate class. The class will not begin discernment and formation until December of 2017. However, this fall and winter there will be two information sessions for anyone who feels that God may be asking them to explore the idea of becoming a Deacon. There will be a "Come and See" session in October in Red Lake Falls and one in January in Detroit Lakes. These sessions will be an opportunity for men to explore some Biblical, Spiritual, Vocational and practical insights into the Diaconate through the eyes of some of our current Deacons. For more information please talk to Fr. Chuck, Fr. Don , Robb Naylor and/or me, Deacon Kermit. We would be glad to answer any questions you may have. Please prayerfully consider attending one of these two sessions! Applications for this next class will be accepted starting in January of 2017. These sessions are meant to answer questions about what it means to be a deacon and to inform you of the process. Attending does not commit you in any way to further participation. I actually attended one of these sessions twelve years before I entered and committed to the process. On another note, this week brings us to the end of our current fiscal year. Thank you to all who have contributed financial to St. Philip's parish. As the bookkeeper and as Deacon I look forward to your continued support of our mission and challenge each and every one of us to do all that we can with the spiritual and financial gifts God has given us. May God bless all of you, Deacon Kermit

June 26, 2016 Greetings from Christ The King Retreat Center in Buffalo, Minnesota.

Relic Tour to Visit St. Philip’s Venerate the relics of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, the relics of these two saints who exemplified courage and conviction in the face of persecution are coming to the Diocese of Crookston. St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher were prominent 16th century Englishmen who stood against King Henry VIII’s attempted supremacy over the Catholic Church, and accepted martyrdom instead of abandoning their faith. This witness is especially compelling to American Catholics today, as we face threats to our religious liberty and rights of conscience. The relics of St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher will be at St. Philip’s Church on Monday, June 27. The program with presentation of the relics will be from 2:30 to 3:30 PM.

EFT (Electronic Fund Transfer) Payment Option My husband and I started using EFT for our Sunday offertory gifts when our three boys were quite young. My memory of that time of life is hazy at best. Getting the family ready to go to Mass was similar to running a three ring circus. Success was measured by showing up (not too late) with three clean boys wearing (somewhat) clean clothes. We hit this measure of almost half of the time. On really good weeks, Bob and I would also have time to write a check to put in our offertory envelope. Trust me, this was more of a going through the motions process than it was a heartfelt gift of thanksgiving for all He has bestowed on us. About the time we committed to using our Crockpot for family meals, we decided to give EFT a try. For us, EFT was a great option. It moved us from sporadic giving to planned giving. Once each year, we take a serious look at our Sunday offertory giving. We evaluate our current giving rate, we prayerfully consider what God desires for us to do going forward, we talk about it together, and we make a decision for the next year. Our giving actually matches our intention because EFT takes out all the obstacles. It’s easy! I love it! If you’re interested in giving it a try, simply fill out the form. Completed forms can be dropped in the collection basket or dropped off at the parish office. If you ever want to change the amount of your EFT, just follow-up with Deacon Kermit. EFT givers are invited to put an “I Give Electronically” card into the collection basket if they so desire. If you have any questions regarding EFT, please let me know. Thanks! - Maggie McCalip 218-441-4906 [email protected]
