A PRAYER TO BEGIN A SCHOOL YEAR

Blessed are you, Lord God,

Creator of body and mind and heart;

you have sent the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge

to guide your people in all their ways.

At the beginning of this new school year,

we implore your mercy:

bless the students, teachers, and staff,

that together we may grow in faith, hope, and love

as we learn from you and each other

how to follow your Son Jesus.

Expand the horizons of our minds,

that we may grow in wisdom, understanding, and

knowledge;

deepen our commitment to seek the truth of your

ways;

and enliven our faith to reach out to those in need.

Glory and praise to you, Lord God,

in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.

Amen

THE JAMES A. GREENLEAF JR. MEMORIAL

TRUST FUND, INC. 20TH ANNIVERSARY MEMO-

RIAL GALA AND 5K RIVER RUN FOR THE FUND

The James A. Greenleaf Jr. Memorial Trust Fund, Inc. has

always hosted annual fundraising events to honor our dear

friend, Jim Greenleaf, who lost his life in the September

11th attacks in NYC. In 2020 and early 2021, due to the

pandemic, we were unable to host such events. This year

marks the 20th Anniversary since the attacks and therefore

we will be hosting a 20th Memorial Gala AND our 5K Riv-

er Run for the Fund on the same day; September 11th,

2021. The Memorial Gala will be held at Ocean Beach and

will host up to 450 people. There will be local dignitaries,

guest speakers and it will feature the popular local band,

SUGAR. There will also be a full program of events

throughout the evening and you can look forward to great

food, remembrance, special speaking guests, dancing and

celebrating an amazing life. Our Annual 5K will also be at

Ocean Beach and participants can run or walk on paved

roads with minimal traffic along "the wall" overlooking

Long Island Sound and New London Harbor. The course is

picturesque, flat and fast! The course has been professional-

ly measured and is a certified 5K. We would love Saint

Bernard School students, families, faculty & staff in attend-

ance representing their school and showing support to the

Greenleaf Fund. The Fund is used to provide financial as-

sistance to students attending Saint Bernard School. To reg-

ister for these events please log onto our web-

site: www.jamesgreenleaf.org. Many thanks for your con-

tinued support and we look forward to seeing you in Sep-

tember. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach

out to our President Frank Marcille at [email protected].

HELP FOR HAITI

Please keep Haiti and its people in your pray-

ers after they suffered a major earthquake on

Saturday, August 14, 2021. The town of Jere-

mie, a remote town in southwest Haiti (the

Grand'Anse Department) was one of the worst-hit areas.

Some people have asked how they can help or where to

send money. One of our parishioners, Dr. Dan Scoppetta, a

member of the Walk With Haiti Committee and a member

of St. Mark's Knights of Columbus Council has a great sug-

gestion. Dan has made many trips to that area, performing

surgery... He works closely with an organization there,

called GAHDA (Grand'Anse Health & Development Asso-

ciation), which has provided many services to the commu-

nity for over 30 years. Their executive director, Bette Ge-

brian, PhD, RN, MPH, moved to Jeremie from Connecticut

in 1987, and raised her family there. Dr. Scoppetta knows

that GAHDA is ready to help when disasters strike. After

Hurricane Matthew devastated most of the Grand'Anse De-

partment in 2016, GAHDA immediately began coordinat-

ing relief efforts, including the dispersal of food, medi-

cines, healthcare, and relief supplies. GAHDA also provid-

ed building supplies for home repair to over 3,000 people

who lost their housing. For more information about who

they are and what they do, visit their website

www.GAHDA.org. Donations can be made there using

Paypal, credit cards and debit cards. Contact Dan Scoppetta

at 860-573-9287, he will explain a simple way to donate

cash or by check. Thank you – Walk With Haiti Commit-
