LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS -

mission. If you have been thinking about possibly
joining a parish ministry, please join us for an
informational meeting on Mon., Feb. 6th at 7pm in the
School Library.
January 8, 2012 3 122
Dear Friends,
“Behold, the Lord, the Mighty One, has come” in the holy Child born of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Revealed to the shepherds on Christmas as Israel’s long-awaited Messiah, in today’s Solemnity of the
Epiphany, Jesus is manifested as the universal Savior, inviting all the nations of the world, represented by
the magi who followed the star by which God “gathered his children from the rising to the setting of the
sun.” With them, we draw near to offer Jesus the gold of our adoration, the incense of our prayer, the myrrh
of our hearts’ devoted love.
As the Christmas season draws to a close, I want to once again thank everyone for their good
wishes, beautiful cards and delicious treats enjoyed by myself and the entire parish staff. Your generosity is
deeply appreciated and your abiding support is counted as a priceless blessing!
As I have had the opportunity over the years to read various parish bulletins from near and far, it
was recently suggested that I offer opportunities which other parishes offer concerning memorials. As you
are aware, each Sunday we have beautiful floral arrangements which grace our sanctuary and then our
chapel throughout the week. These beautiful arrangements enhance our celebrations and our church.
Beginning this year, if you wish to donate to a floral arrangement in memory of a loved one or to
commemorate a special event in your family, kindly call the parish office to make arrangements for a floral
tribute. The memorial/commemoration will be noted in the parish bulletin each week a donation is
arranged. Also, if you would wish to memorialize the sanctuary lamp which burns each week in the church
and chapel ( as a reminder of the Lord’s presence) in our church, arrangements for this may also be made
through the parish office. The donation for the sanctuary lamp in the church and/or chapel is $10.00 each.
These are simply opportunities that some may wish to take advantage of in remembering their loved ones
and noteworthy events in the family.
At the recent meeting of our Finance Council, the topic of the rectory roof and windows were
discussed. We have had some issues with the windows in the rectory (water seepage, air flow, failure to
lock, etc). No one on the council could remember when the second roof was installed on the building. At the
recommendation of the council, we will be contracting for a home inspection of the rectory to see if there are
any issues which we are not aware of that may need some attention. It is the thought of the council that we
should develop a maintenance plan for the rectory if any issues are uncovered by the inspection. It is only
good stewardship to insure the value of this beautiful parish home which you provide for the priests. Thank
you for providing us with this wonderful place to live!
May the gifts of the magi, presented to the Savior, inspire us to greater works of charity to the poor
and needy among us!
Saint Robert Bellarmine, pray for us!
With prayers,
Monsignor Beisel
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Today we
celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, where the Magi find the
newborn king and offer him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
In the spirit of the Magi, please put your gift in the St.
Vincent de Paul Poor Box so that comfort and peace
can once again be given to a newborn child.

FOCUS ON FAITH THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Isaiah 60:1-6; Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6; Matthew 2:1-12
The visit of the Magi occurs directly before the story of the Holy Family's
flight into Egypt. Matthew's Gospel tells a version of Jesus' birth that is
different than the one in Luke. Of the actual birth of Jesus, Matthew tells
us little more than, “When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the
days of King Herod . . . ” The story of the census is found only in Luke's
Gospel, but we hear about the visit of the Magi only in Matthew's Gospel.
We know little about the Magi. They come from the East and journey to
Bethlehem, following an astrological sign, so we believe them to be
astrologers. We assume that there were three Magi based upon the naming
of their three gifts. The Gospel does not say how many Magi paid homage
to Jesus. In Matthew's Gospel, they represent the Gentiles' search for a
savior. Because the Magi represent the entire world, they also represent
our search for Jesus.
We have come to consider the gifts they bring as a foreshadowing of Jesus'
role in salvation. We believe the meaning of the gifts to be Christological.
Gold is presented as representative of Jesus' kingship. Frankincense is a
symbol of his divinity because priests burned the substance in the Temple. Myrrh, which was used to
prepare the dead for burial, is offered in anticipation of Jesus' death. The word Epiphany means
“manifestation” or “showing forth.” Historically several moments in Christ's early life and ministry have
been celebrated as “epiphanies,” including his birth in Bethlehem, the visit of the Magi, his baptism by
John, and his first miracle at Cana.
Are you caring and hospitable? Are you an active listener? Are you open and approachable and committed to your
relationship with God? Thank you to those who have graciously accepted the invitation to be a SMALL GROUP leader for Why Catholic?. We are need of a few more leaders. Please call or email Joan Fitzpatrick for details ASAP. 215.343.0315 or [email protected]. Training will be provided.
A reason to participate in WHY CATHOLIC?:
Society and the pressures of today offer little
opportunity for us to stop and reflect on our spiritual
life. Small Sharing Groups give us the time, the space,
and the direction to reflect on our relationship with God
and others and become more aware of the times when
God touched our lives, challenged us or spoke to us.
Think about being part of a small group!
Small Group Sign-Up Weekend is
January 21-22 at all the Masses.
Another reason to
participate in WHY CATHOLIC?: Whatever stage we find our relationship with Christ,
there is always room for improvement. Being in a Small
Sharing Group encourages us to grow with the support
of others. The Why Catholic? Process
invites us to rethink our priorities so that
we can place a greater emphasis on
improving our relationship with God and
others and improving our lives. Our first
session, that starts in February, will focus
on how we PRAY, Catholic forms of prayer and
insights on prayer.
Want to know more before you sign up?
There will be a short information session on
Thursday, January 19 at either 10:00am OR 7:00pm in Cranney.

ST.CYPRIAN CHURCH—THANK YOU
Dear Msgr. & Parishioners,
Once again I am writing to thank all of you
for the wonderful gifts you sent to so many families
in our church and our neighborhood. It is
impossible to explain the feeling you get when this
gift giving takes place. Each of the years I have
been privileged to be the “channel” of your
generosity, I am overwhelmed.
First of all, your very organized and
efficient “elves” arrive!. Then comes the moving
van...RED and GREEN, would you believe! The
owner and his assistant are also dressed in red and
green!! I think these were their regular clothes, but
they take on a different glow at Christmas. The
comes the unloading of so many big clear plastic
bags all filled with beautifully wrapped gifts. The
comes all the food!! Then comes the envelope with
all the gift cards!! The joy that surrounds all this
activity can be felt in the air. Even thinking about it
makes my eyes misty.
Thank you to all ho contributed in any way
to this wonderful gift giving. I know I speak for all
who were the recipients of your kindness when I tell
you that we are so grateful and please know that
you are very much in our prayers. The intentions of
your parishioners will be remembered in our
11:00am Mass on Sunday January 1.
God bless you! Happy New Year!!
Sincerely,
Sr. Mary Lydon, IHM
Director of Parish Services

they are not alone.

Catholic spiritual context.
