COLLECTION FOR STORM/FLOODING RELIEF IN LOUISIANA

As many of you are likely already aware this past month, after heavy rain falls and flooding, the people of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and surrounding areas have suffered tremendously. Many stand now in dire need of support from their brothers and sisters following what the Red Cross has called the worst natural disaster since Hurricane Sandy which touched down only a few short years ago.

On the weekend of September 17-18 we will be taking up a collection for relief efforts in Louisiana. Donations will be forwarded to Catholic Charities USA in order to support the relief effort in Louisiana. Please consider prayerfully making this offering in support of our brothers and sisters in Louisiana. In the meantime keep the victims, families and relief workers especially in your thoughts and prayers.

German Mass - On Sunday September 11, all are invited to join the German-American community in celebrating their annual pilgrimage and memorial Mass, in German, at the Shrine of St. Katherine Drexel in Bensalem. JUST A THOUGHT: Sunday, September 4th, Mother Teresa of Calcutta will be canonized and known as St. Mother Teresa. For years, many of us were able to watch her travels and hear her speak of the need to serve others. What a wonderful model of love, patience, and charity she was!

One of my favorite St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta quotes is:

People are often unreasonable and self-centered.

Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of

ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway.

If you find happiness, people may be jealous.

Be happy anyway. The good you do today may be forgotten

tomorrow. Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough.

Give your best anyway. For you see, in the end, it is between you

and God. It was never between you and them

anyway. ― Mother Teresa

As we approach the closing weeks/months of this Jubilee Year of Mercy, let’s keep St. Mother Teresa’s example in front of us!

FOCUS ON FAITH TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Wisdom 9:13-18b; Philemon 9-10, 12-17; Luke 14:25-33 The focus of today’s Gospel is humility. Humility is a challenging virtue to teach, especially in a social-mediated culture that allows us to present our perfectly edited selves to the world. Jesus uses a parable to teach his disciples that embracing an attitude of humility opens us to the needs of our brothers and sisters. Mother Teresa of Calcutta lived such humility - focused on the poor, the crippled, and especially children in need. Her life is an example of how God lifts up those who humbly serve others. Today we celebrate her canonization. “Humility is the mother of all virtues...it is in being humble that our love becomes real, devoted and ardent.” Mother Teresa Truly in her lifetime, Mother Teresa practiced humility and became an icon of God’s tender mercy, radiating the light of God’s love to so many through the works of mercy, both material and spiritual. From heaven she continues to fulfill her mission as she “lights the light of those in darkness on earth.” With her canonization today, the Church presents her as a model and intercessor of those who, like her, “long to light the fire of love and peace throughout the world.” She can be taken as a patron saint es-pecially for those who are most in need of God’s mercy.

FORTY HOURS DEVOTION— September 18-20, 2016 Guest Homilist for all three evenings— Rev. Sean English, Parochial Vicar of St. Christopher Parish

You will remember Fr. Sean was assigned here as a seminarian a few years back and was ordained in 2014.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament begins at the close of the 11:00 Mass on Sunday, September 18. Perpetual Adoration will continue over the three days ending with a Eucharistic Procession. Evening prayer will begin each evening at 7:00 PM.

“The Eucharist is Jesus who gives himself entirely to us. To nourish ourselves with him and

abide in him through Holy Communion, if we do it in faith, transforms our life into a gift to

God and to our brothers...to let ourselves be nourished by the “Bread of Life,” means to be

in tune with the heart of Christ…” Pope Francis

Please see the Adoration sign-up sheets in the Narthex

an to spend a half hour or an hour with Our Lord.

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL In today’s Gospel, Jesus lays out the demands of following him, the great cost of discipleship. The Mission Statement of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul states: “Vincentians witness God’s love by embracing all works of charity and justice…the Society makes no distinction in those served because, in them, Vincentians see the face of Christ.” Have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?

THE CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL ~ UPDATE FOR 2016 To date our parish has contributed $62,830 from 450 donors, towards our goal of $65,364. Percentage wise, this puts us at 96%. An additional $2,525 would put us at 100%.Thank you to all those who contributed to this worthy cause.

Pope Francis emphasized the family on his visit to us in the Philadelphia Archdiocese. Catholic Charities helps our Archdiocesan extended family in helping immigrants getting settled into our area, helping the homeless and providing education for the learning disabled just to name a few. If you have not yet made a contribution, please consider making a donation. Your financial help is needed to give a NEW VISION to those in need.

Envelopes for the appeal can still be found in our new Narthex after Mass and at the Sacristy entrance. Your contributions can be mailed using the envelopes provided or deposited in the collection basket. With your support we can surely demonstrate helping others realize their dreams.
