July 29, 2018 3 122

Dear Friends,

From now until the end of August, the Gospel will be a selection from a single chapter of Saint John’s Gospel – the chapter in which Jesus reveals himself as the Bread of Life, the one whose Body and Blood can bring eternal life. This chapter begins today with Jesus feeding thousands by multiplying the loaves and the fish, but we begin the scriptures with Elisha, a “man of God,” who feeds a hundred people with twenty small loaves. Today we heard of the generosity of God in feeding the hungry and needy. Let us accept this call as well and reach out in generosity to all we meet this week who truly need us!

As you can see, the new flooring in church is nearly complete. I am grateful to Mark, the owner of Wright Flooring, and his staff for their professionalism and cooperation with the parish schedule to complete this project in a timely fashion. Mike and Jim, the installers, worked long hours to see that there were no delays and delivered an outstanding addition to our sacred space. Thank you!

On the topic of the floor, as I have notified you in the past several bulletins, the medallions have been graciously provided for in memory of loved ones, the Mastroocco Family (St. Robert medallion) in the memory of their beloved father and father-in-law, John Ward; Ann Daugert (Faith medallion) in memory of her husband Al and Mary Powers (Hope medallion) in memory of her husband Carl. I was shocked beyond words when I was told that anonymous parishioners had donated the CHARITY MEDALLION in memory of my father, Frank and in honor of my mother, Theresa. I could not believe the thoughtfulness and generosity for such a lasting gift to memorialize my parents. I am touched very deeply for this gift and pledge my prayers to those gracious and loving contributors.

This week we turn the calendar page to August, I can’t believe it! Summers are not what they used to be – it seemed like summer lasted a long time! I am told, on good authority, that the older you get the faster time passes. I must be heading to older age!

Just a reminder – next weekend we will have a second collection to support the missionary work of the Dominican Friars in Kenya. I think we were all touched by Father McCormack’s homily last weekend and I have every reason to believe that you will do your best to support this most worthy work of the Church and the Dominican missionaries. Remember, Father requested $10 in each envelope so we can allow the $1.00 bill have a weekend off. (If you were not at the 11AM Mass, you might not understand the reference).

May Saint Robert Bellarmine bless the remaining days of July and fill the August days with the warmth of God’s grace!

With prayers,

The Seventeenth Sunday In

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2 Kings4:42-44; Ephesians 4:1-6; John 6:1-15

Our Lectionary for the Sunday readings will leave the Gospel of Mark for the next several

weeks and instead presents this event from the Gospel of John. In John's Gospel, Jesus'

multiplication of the loaves and the fishes is presented as a sign of his authority and divinity.

Jesus interprets the meaning and significance of this miracle as a sharing of his Body and Blood.

This chapter of John’s Gospel is the proclamation of Jesus’ “Bread of Life Discourse.”

Take time in these following weeks to reflect on the extravagant love bestowed on us each time we

receive the Eucharist!

SCAM ALERT - Please be advised that there is a nationwide scam that has affected several parishes in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. This particular scam is titled the “Gift Card” scam.

In this scam the parishioners of a parish are the targets. An unknown

person creates an e-mail address account which contains the pastor’s name or the name of the church. An e-mail is then sent to the parishioners requesting them to purchase a gift card and proceeded to tell the unknown person the numbers off of the back of the cards. After the person received the numbers, they stopped sending emails.

Retire your old worn out, tired and tattered American Flag in the proper manner. The Knights of Columbus Council 4160 want to assist our parishioners in retiring their American Flags as required. During August there will be a designated container located at the back of the church to collect your flags for retirement in a respectful and dignified ceremony at a future date to be determined.

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy's announcement that he will retire has catapulted Roe v. Wade (the Supreme Court's landmark abortion case) into the news. Pro-abortion groups are pulling out all the stops to urge the U.S. Senate to reject any nominee who does not promise to publicly endorse Roe. And they are misrepresenting the legal and social reality of Roe and what would happen if it is overturned.

The upcoming Supreme Court vacancy provides us with yet another occasion requiring focused prayer. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops does not support or oppose the confirmation of any presidential nominee. However, given this historic moment, the U.S. bishops are urging all people of good will to pray that a change in the U.S. Supreme Court may move our nation closer to the day when every human being is protected in law and welcomed in life.

The collection includes Padre Pio’s glove, tunic, blood particles from his stigmata, and a cushion he used to kneel when praying for the sick. Special Masses will be held on Saturday evening, September 15, and again on Sunday, September 16. A street procession and healing service, with confessions and blessing with relics, will follow the Sunday Mass. Buses welcome.
