A Stewardship Parish My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what is. It will be friendly, if I am. It will be holy, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will be prayerful, if I pray. It will make generous gifts to many causes if I am a generous giver. It will bring others into its worship, if I invite and bring them. It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compas-sion, charity, and mercy, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with the help of God, I now dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be. Amen
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There is a show on public television in which people search their attics for heirlooms, dust them off, and trek them downtown for ruthless evaluation by teams of antique experts. Occasional-ly the owners are surprised to learn they have been harboring priceless artifacts: a Tiffany bowl used to catch the car keys, a Van Gogh in the downstairs bathroom. What they lugged downtown in a paper bag, they carry home in bubble wrap and receiving blankets. It’s the same way with treasures in Church life. Lots of things were lugged up into the attic years ago, and it was inevitable that some treasures ended up in the trash. Many Catholics tucked the sacrament of penance away in a dusty corner. We know it’s there if we need it, but it is not the weekly routine it once was, like the Saturday bath “whether I need it or not.” Today, especially in Lent and Advent or as part of personal preparation for marriage, ordination, or other life transitions, the sacrament of penance is a treasure of the Christian life waiting to be discovered. A Pastor’s Reflection Ok, the Cards lost their one game playoff. It makes the rest of the baseball playoffs difficult to watch. But in last week’s column I also shared that Pope Francis opened a 3-year Synod journey (an assembly of Bishops preceded by much listening and input) inviting consultations with Catholics throughout the world. On this note I was reading an article written by Archbishop Jose Gomez, of the nations largest Catholic community, Los Angeles. He was in Rome last weekend for the opening of the Synod. As Archbishop Gomez summed up, “We are praying to rediscover the depths of our identity as missionary disciples. We cannot stress this enough: Our lives find their meaning and purpose in Jesus Christ. Nothing else explains who we are, why we are alive, and what we should be living for.” These words were on my mind earlier this week when I met with a woman, an attorney and District Judge, who is courageously fighting cancer after having a stroke and heart attack. She is always in pain with a menacing headache. But she keeps going, still reporting in for court duty. We talked together of how her pain and suffering is a witness to many who know her and are praying for her. We ended lunch by praying for her healing – if it be God’s will. All of our lives, good and bad, are for Jesus Christ. Archbishop Gomez continued, “We need to remember that the Church’s mission is more than what happens in our parish programs and liturgies, in our ministries and administrative work. We are a part of something far greater. We are a part of God’s plan for history as he sent his only Son into this world, to unite all things in Christ, and through Christ to join in the communion of his divine love. The Church’s mission is to complete the love story of salvation history. As Jesus gave his life to save us from sin and death, he calls each of us to give our lives to him, to follow him, and to share in the mission of his Church. We are saved to save others.” I am praying this week that every one of us can be about building up the Kingdom of God. And that we will open our hearts to Jesus Christ in a new way, to draw closer and go deeper in our relationship with Jesus. Pope Francis urges us to “enter into a new encounter with Jesus.”
We cannot give what we do not have. We need to be converted before we can bring others to conversion. That means we need to pray before we can proclaim. So, let us all make a renewed commitment to prayer as we meet Jesus and adore Him in the pages of the Gospel and in the Eucharist. Remember too that October is the Month of the Rosary. Take time to pray this quiet, repetitive prayer to Mary. Mary will powerfully journey at our side. Msgr. Mark Ullrich

North County Deanery PSR (Parish School of Religion) Highlights
The new North County Deanery PSR program in the second month of learning. We have added students to our roster weekly and now serve 60 students and their families.
We completed our first all school service project; each student wrote letters of cheer to the children in Cardinal Glennon Hospital. All classes are busy learning and praying together. Kindergarten and 1st graders learned the Story of Creation and are practicing prayers. 2nd grade students are learning some beloved Gospel stories and getting ready for First Reconciliation.
3rd grade is learning how the Catholic Church welcomes us through the Sacraments and guides us to love our neighbors.
4th graders are busy learning about the Trinity.
In 5th grade the students are discussing the Liturgical calendar and learning sign language to accompany song and prayer.
6th and 7th graders are learning how to receive God’s message through the Bible. The Old Testament tells what God promised and the New Testament tells how that promise was fulfilled. Confirmation will culminate the year for 8th grade students. They are learning about the importance of faith-based decision making.
October is the Month of the Rosary. As a community of parents, students and catechists we joined in a decade of the rosary. North County Deanery PSR is held at St. Sabina School every Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 7:45. There is no class on November 23.
