Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Ecumenical Service—Jan 15 The annual prayer service for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be held on Monday evening, Janu-ary 15 at St. Sabina Catholic Church, beginning at 7 PM. The theme for 2018 is “Your Right Hand, O Lord, Glorious in Power” (Exodus 15:6). Plan to join with members of other Christian churches and communities in our area for this special service as we join with Chris-tians around the world praying “that all may be one... that the world may believe” (John 17:21). All are most welcomed to participate.

New Tax Benefit for Catholic School Parents Catholic school parents may benefit from the recent changes to the federal tax code. The recently passed fed-eral tax law allows parents to make contributions to a child’s Missouri 529 MOST account for K-12 tuition, in ad-dition to expenses for higher education that are already permitted. The Missouri 529 MOST account is an invest-ment program sponsored by the Missouri State Treasur-er’s office. Anyone can open a MOST account, including parents, grandparents, or friends of K-12 or college-aged students. In this way, if parents lack financial resources, others can contribute to the family’s MOST ac-count. Interest earnings on contributions made by parents to MOST accounts are not subject to state or federal tax-es. Furthermore, qualified distributions from the account (those for higher education expenses, and now K-12 tui-tion) are also not taxed. Parents can withdraw up to $10,000 annually for private K-12 tuition per student as an eligible distribution from a MOST account. Parents can elect to make contributions to the MOST account accord-ing to their own timetable, such as monthly. Parents may want to consult with their local bank or financial advisor regarding the advisability of setting up a 529 MOST ac-count. To calculate a Missouri school family’s tax bene-fit, visit: https://vanguard.wealthmsi.com/stdc.php To set up a Missouri 529 MOST account, visit the Missouri MOST website: https://www.missourimost.org/home/open-a-most-529-account.html.

Catholic Home Missions Appeal—Jan 21 Next week, we will take up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the United States are considered home mission territory because they are unable to fund the essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support of this appeal helps ease the struggle of these dioceses. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this appeal. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions.

“When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the LORD came and revealed his presence, calling out as before, ‘Samuel, Samuel!’ Samuel answered,

‘Speak, for your servant is listening.’ Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him, not permitting any word of his to be without effect.”

1 Samuel 3: 9b-10, 19 Samuel does not recognize the voice of the Lord. That, too, may be a problem for us. First we need to be listening. Are we, or are we merely going through the motions? Responding to God with “Here I am” is a magnificent way to react to God. It is not that God does not know where we are, but saying that can serve as a reminder to us that we are stewards, servants to Him, and it implies we are prepared to hear what He wants us to do. “Here I am” is said numerous times by those in the Old Testament including Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Isaiah, and by Ananias in the New Testament. When Jesus says, “Come follow me,” as He does to us, do we hear Him, and even more important do we respond and do we follow? — See more at www.catholicsteward.com/blog/

This past Monday evening we began the season of Ordinary Time which will continue till the first Sunday of Advent, interrupted by the great ninety days of the Lent-Easter-Pentecost season. Since we are in lectionary year B, the focus of our gospel readings is the gospel according to Mark. However the

gospel for the second Sunday in Ordinary Time in all three lectionary years comes from John’s gospel, continuing the key themes of the public manifestation and epiphany of Jesus to the world.

Today, the Second Sunday in Ordinary time, has John’s gospel recount the mediating role of John the Baptist in connecting his disciples to the person of Jesus. John, who has come to know and recognize Jesus’ identity and mission, realizes that Jesus is the true and sure path to God, and directs his disciples to follow Jesus. John’s disciples take up John’s challenge and follow Jesus. Jesus sees them and turns around to ask. “What are you looking for?” They respond with “Rabbi...where are you staying?” He says to them, “Come, and you will see.” The disciples, open to the invitation to come and know more about Jesus, went and stayed with him, and their lives were never the same.

Our first reading from the first book of Samuel narrates a similar experience occurring in the life of young Samuel. He hears someone calling his name but does not know who it is or what it is all about. This happens three times as Samuel searches for understanding and meaning from his mentor, Eli. Even Eli is not certain till it happens repeatedly. Then Eli, the mentor and the elder, recognizes the call of the Lord in Samuel’s life, and advises Samuel to respond to the Lord’s call with “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” Once Samuel opens up to the Lord, the Lord continues to be with Samuel and his life is never the same. The Lord gives meaning and significance to Samuel’s life and words, simply because Samuel was attuned to God’s will, and carried it out in his words and deeds.

As we sing responsorial Psalm 40, “Here am I Lord; I come to do your will,” we also strongly affirm our desire to listen to the Lord and respond accordingly. According to the

psalmist, the Lord is not that interested in sacrifices or holocausts. Rather the Lord desires “ears open to obedience” and a stance of continual attunement to God’s will, desire and direction. The psalmist asserts that “To do your will...is my delight.” God’s will for the psalmist is captured in the act of speaking and modeling justice in the presence of all. One never restrains from speaking God’s justice, no matter the consequence. To be attuned to the Lord is to act with justice and to be in right relationship with all.

The second reading from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians boldly affirms that we are the Lord’s and that everything, including our bodies, are to be used for glorifying the Lord. Why? Because in and through the power of the Spirit we have become one with the Lord. So that, whatever we do or speak should reflect this intimate union with the Lord. Christ’s life and death purchased us from the evil one, and made us his own. Therefore, Paul asserts that we are temples of the Holy Spirit, and that we are not our own but belong fully to the Lord. This is the new and intimate connection that we have with God in Christ, and that God has with us. If we actually believe this, then we should act and live differently, always attuned to God’s will.

In everyday life, listening to and attuning ourselves to what God wants is a real challenge. There are many voices calling for our attention and energies. To whom should we listen? Like Samuel, the psalmist, the members of Paul’s Corinthian community and the disciples themselves, we too need constant help in directing our attention to hear God’s voice and to interpret and apply that voice in the daily routine of our lives. In this season of Ordinary Time, ask God for the openness to listen and to follow through on whatever the Lord is asking of us.

Biagio Mazza, Pastoral Associate

Catholics are mostly exposed to the Bible through the Sunday Lectionary Readings. In order to help us all enter into the Bible through the Sunday readings, we offer study sessions that provide an opportunity to read, to study background to the readings, and to reflect on how to apply the readings to our lives. Our next Bible Study date is Jan. 28 at 10:30am in the conference room. All are welcome; bring a bible. To register, call Biagio at 816-979-3153.

ASSISTED LIVING

¿A quién deberíamos escuchar?
