Y a cuál inmenso premio estamos llamados.

A young boy, perhaps 8 or 9 years old came into our thrift store with his father. We knew from past experience that the family was poor. While dad worked two jobs, mom was at home taking care of the six children. Money was tight. The boy was looking for a bicycle that he could ride to school and to help him look for lawn-mowing jobs. We directed him to where we kept our bicycles, and told him when he found one to bring it to the cash register, and we would give him a price. A short time later he wheeled a bike to the front of the store. He put down the kickstand, and both he and his father carefully inspected the bicycle from one end to the other…checking the chain, the spokes, the seat, the alignment of the handlebars…a thorough check. The young boy and his father conferred for many minutes. The boy kept inspecting the bike. With furrowed brows and the most discerning of eyes he kept looking at his dad and at the bike…just in case he was missing something. Finally, after meeting with his father, he came to the register. “This is a good bike. How much are you asking for it, ma’am?” “We usually get $10 for a bike like this one.” The look of disappointment on his face was huge. “I only have $5. Do you think you could save it for me until I can get the rest of the money? It will only take a couple of days.” The cashier told him that, believe it or not, there was a special on bikes that day only, and he could have the bike for $5. He carefully paid for it with quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies that he had collected, and turned it over to us with all of the solemnity of a major financial transaction. He was about to leave with his cherished bicycle when the cashier called him back. She handed him a crisp $5 bill and told him to use the money to make sure the bike had good tires. Confused, he asked if he could still keep the bike. We told him the bike was his. By the look on his face you would have thought Santa had just come down the chimney and given him the gift of a lifetime! The beautiful, radiant grin on the face of this young boy was a sight to behold! This is just one of the many joys and blessings of working the thrift store at Helping Hands. And special thanks to the family who donated that bicycle to us, to pass along to that young boy in need. God bless you and thank you very, very much!
