Welcome to St. Stephen’s! It is our hope that the following document gives a good snapshot of our St. Stephen’s family. The past year has been a challenge for us but with the help of our Deacon, Carmen Viola, and Father Allen Salmon, our long term supply priest, we have been able to offer continuous services to our community. The entire congregation has pulled together and works diligently to continue God’s work within and around us but we are looking for that special priest who can meet our spiritual needs and foster growth in our parish.

Church History St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church has been a prominent landmark in Mullica Hill, NJ for over 160 years. Built in 1853, St. Stephen’s is the home of one of the earliest congregations in the area. The history of the Episcopal Church in Mullica Hill is traced as far back as 1790, when Colonel Joseph Chatham began having services in the old mill of the town. The first church building was erected in 1813 and was used for thirty-nine years. During that time, as the congregation grew, resident clergy were used. When needed, clergy were brought in from Philadelphia to conduct services.

In 1850, the one-half acre piece of land for the present church was purchased for $200 and construction of the present building began in 1852, and was completed in 1853. Clergy who also served in neighboring parishes conducted services. This arrangement continued until World War I, when a regular priest was assigned. After the war, the size of the congregation dwindled, and another priest was not appointed until 1932. Sporadic services were held between 1932 and 1938. In 1938, another priest was appointed, and continuous services have been held there ever since. Attendance ebbed and flowed but the church continued. From 1938 until 1967 St. Stephen’s shared a priest with churches in nearby communities. Then, in 1967, a seminarian, Harry Collins, began his 37-year ministry. Father Collins lived in the rectory with his family. While working as a high school teacher, Father Collins raised his children and supported the ministries of St. Stephen’s. With the retirement of Father Collins in 2004, St. Stephens began another priest search and it was then that Mother Valerie Balling became part of the St. Stephen’s family. In 2005, with the arrival of Reverend Valerie, St. Stephen’s had a fulltime priest for the first time in its history. During this time we saw an increase in laity participation in all ministries. A Christian Education program was developed for both children and adults and attendance increased as new programs were developed. Outreach programs, including monthly visits to St. Paul’s in Camden were instituted. We also

participated in a joint ministry with Holy Name Roman Catholic Church, housing families through Family Promise of Gloucester County. Under the direction of Reverend Valerie, deacons became a part of the family. Deacon Carmen Viola and Reverend Valerie increased laity participation and instituted a new program for adult education. Additionally, during her tenure, improvements were made to the buildings. Major renovations were completed both in Collins Hall and the rectory. Photos of some of the new rooms have been included in our profile. Reverend Valerie lived in the rectory and remained part of our church until she was called to another parish in August of 2011. With the partnership between Reverend Valerie and the lay people, strong leaders emerged enabling St Stephens to continue to move forward during this time of transition. Throughout these recent changes, St. Stephen’s has remained a strong and grow-ing congregation. Mullica Hill is no longer the sleepy little town that it has been throughout most of its history. Harrison Township, the surrounding area of Mullica Hill, has become one of the fastest growing areas of Southern New Jersey. A priest who comes to St. Stephen’s has a unique opportunity to help a highly active congregation. The members of the church have pulled together and continue to do God’s work within the church and within the community at large.

Worship A typical Sunday at St. Stephens begins with our 8 am service. This service is a reflective service without music. We have approximately 25 members that faithfully attend at this time. The 8 am service is followed by the 10 am service where we have music. Our organist, Nell Immler, usually selects upbeat hymns from many sources to inspire parishioners and encourage participation. Members attending either service play an active role in lay ministries such as reading and LEM duties.

We have a lively and friendly bunch, and during the Peace, we move about the church greeting one another. We also celebrate birthdays and anniversaries with a special blessing where everyone in the congregation can lay hands on the honoree (s) during the prayer. This occurs at both services. Rite II is our usual form of worship, and both nursery and children's chapel run at the same time as the 10 am service. All of the children join in the sanctuary around the Peace so that they are with their families for communion.

Once a month, we offer a music program for the children, and they participate throughout the service, including the readings. "Children's Sunday" concludes with all the children coming up to sing in the front of the church. We also have a volunteer choir that welcomes all ages. St. Stephens has several talented musicians

who volunteer to play at our services so Nell often has musical accompaniment for the 10 am and special services. We have several young families, and it is not unusual to hear praise and thanks-givings from our youngest members. It is wonderful that St. Stephens is a warm, welcoming, and caring environment where parents can still feel comfortable in worship--even when their young participate exuberantly. Youth are a strong focus for us, and we encourage participation at any age. We have a program for Junior Acolytes where we use electric tea lights so even the very young can be candle bearers and participate. During the holidays, we often have pageants after the 10 am services in the parish hall. Our parents and kids work hard to put on wonderful theatrical productions of the Nativity as well as Holy Week. We also have a very active weekly 10 AM Wednes-day Healing service, consistently attended by 8 to 10 people. This is a ministry run solely by the laity. The sandwich board sign often draws people off the street. It is so wonderful to know that our healing services reach folks other than "our own" St. Stephen's members.

We also have many additional services that focus on specific Holy Days during the year as well as Advent and Lenten activities. A popular service is the washing of the feet on Maundy Thursday. St. Stephens is filled with many active members of all ages. Our average Sunday attendance is between 65 and 75 people for both services during the school year. We are excited about our growth and God’s path for our future.

Lay Ministries Opportunities for lay ministry at St. Stephen’s are varied and expanding. Congregants are invited to reflect upon their talents and availability and to join existing ministries or create new ones with the guidance and encouragement of our leaders. Over the past five years we have seen a growth in the lay participation in our current ministries. Lay Eucharistic Ministers (LEMs) participate at both Sunday services as well as special services. Our LEMs lead Morning Prayer or other services in the absence of a priest or deacon. These ministers also serve as mentors to our acolytes. Lay Readers (Lectors) serve at both Sunday services and special services. They read lessons, lead responsive readings and offer the Prayers of the People. Healing Ministers lead our Wednesday morning healing services in rotation in the absence of a priest or minister. Acolytes function at worship services as altar servers, crucifers, and light bearers. Our children begin as soon as they express an interest in participating, and they usually start by extinguishing candles after the service. They progress through carry-ing the battery-operated candles, receiving alms and elements and assisting at the table. As they master one skill, they progress to the next. Our children start as young as 4 years old, as long as they are able to sit quietly during the service and follow the instructions of the older acolyte or a LEM. Altar Guild ministers prepare the sanctuary for worship prior to each service. They ensure the availability of supplies, care for the altar linens, replenish/replace the candles as necessary and polish the cross and candlesticks.

Music Ministries are led by Nell Immler, our organist and choir director. Participants are instrumentalists and vocalists (amateurs and profes-sionals) who enhance our 10:00 a.m. Sunday Service and other special services. Our occasional choir provides music on special occasions and holidays. Our children’s/Junior/Chapel/Sunday School choir leads the congregation in a closing hymn one Sunday every month. Ushers serve by distributing service bulletins, assisting with seating, collecting alms, presenting the elements for the Eucharist and assisting with traffic flow during communion.

Christian Education St. Stephens offers several programs for children. We offer children's chapel and nursery that coincide with our 10am service during the school year. Children return to their families during the Peace and remain with their families for the remainder of the service. We recently began offering nursery during the summer months and also showed a video for the older kids during the 10 am service. It was successful, and we hope to continue offering options for children during the summer to attract more young families. We also offer Sunday School after the 10 am service. We have classes for several age groups, and they meet at the same time as our coffee hour. Sunday School follows the school year. Our adults can also join in for Christian Education on Monday nights at a program that our Deacon has been running for the past 4 years called God Talk. This program centers around biblical themes and participants can discuss how to make the bible relevant in their lives today. The group has consistently had around 15 attendees each week.

Outreach Ministry Outreach is a major focus for St. Stephen's. We place a high importance on remaining visible in our community and to have our doors always open to those in need. We will often assist people in need on an individual basis when someone contacts our church for help. We currently prepare, transport and serve one evening per month at St. Paul’s in Camden, where they serve about 100 food-poor individuals and families. We often support this ministry with an on-going non-perishable food drive as well. Our church hosts the Interfaith Hospitality Network at least twice a year, providing meals and lodging for homeless families either in our parish hall or in the rectory when vacant. While we are hosting a family (or families), members of the parish will join the family for dinner and often also spend the night at the church. On several occasions we have also served as emergency housing for IHN. We collect for children through the Jesse Tree project and the local Toys for Tots campaign and we collect hats, gloves and toiletries for the Seaman’s Institute in Philadelphia every Christmas Season. Part of our outreach is to be and remain visible to our surrounding community. We do this by conducting tours of the church and staffing an information booth during local civic celebrations. Yearly events include Harrison Township Day, the Mullica Hill Ghost Tour and the annual Holiday House Tour. We also participate in many Mullica Hill community events such as sidewalk sales and street celebrations. We open our facilities to outside community programs. Two different Alcoholics Anonymous groups meet weekly in our parish hall. The local Boy Scout troop meets in our parish hall and will join us occasionally in worship and special projects. The Boy Scouts conduct two clean up days a year for our church grounds and attend at least one service each year. Troop 44 has held a charter at St. Stephens for over 60 years. St. Stephens hosts events for the public. Local performance artists such as Cobalt Blue, have held events in the church. The choir from Charter Tech High School for the Performing Arts has also performed at St. Stephens. We strive to remain open to other community groups and opportunities.

We maintain a website to inform our members and the community about regular and special events at St. Stephen’s. We periodically sponsor public service announcements about our church with the local cable provider. We are excited that we have been able to maintain our outreach so actively even though we are a small church. Although we are very active now, it is always one of our goals to continue to extend the outreach program.

Stewardship A stewardship campaign is conducted each year in the fall. The emphasis on pledging is threefold, time, talent and treasure. As a result of this campaign, giving of time, talent and treasure has risen significantly. Over the past five years we have seen an increase in participation in the many ministries offered at St. Stephen’s. There has also been a marked increase of 74% in the number of pledges from 2008 to 2011. At the close of the 2011 campaign, the average yearly pledge was $2,097.00 with 34 committed individuals or families.

Buildings and Grounds

The property of St. Stephen’s includes three buildings grouped together in the historic district of Mullica Hill. Completed in 1853, the church building is on Main Street, amidst a quaint collection of small shops and antique stores. Included in the New Jersey Register of Historic Places, the church is designed in an Italian Country

Romanesque style. The first floor of the church includes eight, double rows of wooden pews, with center and side aisles. A balcony includes another three rows of pews. Stained glass windows provide ambient light, which is supplemented by electric chandeliers and recessed altar lighting. In addition to the altar candles, candelabra and candle wall sconces add to the beauty and reverence of holiday services. An Allen digital organ provides musical accompaniment to hymns. The church has central heating and air conditioning.

12

A bell tower was originally added to the church in 1879, and it continues to serve as a functioning clock tower. For structural reasons, the large bell has been relocated to a gazebo placed in a memorial garden located between the church and parish hall. Being a church built in 1853, St. Stephens is not without its share of building challenges. We recently painted the inside and outside of the church; however the sanctuary is in need of new carpeting. We also face capacity challenges due to the size of our building and the lack of a second exit. We have looked into adding a second exit, however, due to economic constraints and historical significance we have not been able to do so. Continuing maintenance is also necessary due to the age of the building. The parish hall directly behind the church was constructed in 1974. It is a two story, multifunction building that offers comfortable surroundings for varied aspects of parish life. The first floor includes a small children’s chapel, a full-outfitted nursery/daycare room, a rector’s office/conference room and additional Christian Education classrooms. The second floor contains a large meeting/banquet room with complete kitchen facilities. A drawback for parish hall is a lack of air conditioning. This can limit the use of the building in the summer months. Behind the parish hall is a small cemetery, with most of the gravesites dating to the 19th Century. A paved parking lot has been expanded to include a separate entrance and exit; however further expansion is not possible. Parking remains a challenge as we continue to grow. The two-story rectory is adjacent to the church building and includes three large bedrooms, l 1/2 baths, living room, family-room, dining room, eat-in kitchen, laundry room and two fireplaces. It has central heating and air-conditioning. The kitchen, downstairs bath, dining room and living room have recently been updated. The bedrooms and bath upstairs need updating and await the desires and intentions of the new rector.

Mullica Hill Community

The area known as Mullica Hill was first settled in the mid 17th century by Finnish immigrants. For most of its history it has remained a small village in an area dominated by agricultural interests. Today, Mullica Hill is the principle town and

seat of government of Harrison Township. The commercial district has been widely known as an antiques and crafts center. Regarded for its nostalgic charm since 1991, the entire village has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its historic and architectural significance. In recent years, Mullica Hill and Harrison Township have experienced an unpredicted increase in population. Recognized as one of the fastest growing communities in NJ, the real estate of the area has become highly desired as an ideal place for families to reside. The population change from 2000 to 2010 was over 140%, with a majority of its population in the 40-69 age range (US census data). In 2010, there were 3,942 households out of which 49.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.7% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 15.9% were non-families. 13.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.15 and the average family size was 3.47. (US Census) In the township in 2010, the age distribution of the population showed 52.4% of the population was in the age range of 25-64 years. The median age was 38.1 years. The median household income in Mullica Hill (not specifically St. Stephens) was $102,162. About 5.0% of families and 5.5% of the population were below the poverty line. (US Census) A great appeal to families is the excellent educational opportunities provided by local schools. The Harrison Township district offers programs for pre-kindergarten through sixth grade students. Student’s scores on annual formal assessments exceed state averages at all grade levels tested (NJ Department of Education 2011). The Clearview Regional High School District provides secondary education for residents. The graduation rate of the high school is 97% with 85.6% of the graduates expected to attend either a four year or two year college (NJ DOE, 2011). Mullica Hill is the location for the main branch of the Gloucester County library, a state of the art facility that offers extensive holdings in a variety of media. Nearby, Rowan University offers under-graduate and graduate higher education opportunities. Its library, performance halls, stadiums and fitness centers provide extensive research, recreational and arts offerings. Public transportation is

accessible along Main Street and allows easy reach to Woodbury, the county seat, and beyond. In addition to the shops in Mullica Hall and Woodbury, further shopping is available at the Deptford Mall. A multitude of other department and other specialty stores are available with in short driving distances. Along with the spacious rural surroundings and historic charm the residents of Mullica Hill enjoy their proximity to the major urban centers of the mid-Atlantic region. Mullica Hill is within a 30-minute drive to Philadelphia, which provides exceptional leisure and cultural opportunities. It has renowned museums, historic sites, theaters concert halls and sports venues. The beaches and boardwalks of the NJ shore are only an hour’s drive. New York City, Baltimore and the ski resorts of the Pocono Mountains are two hours away by automobile while Washington D.C. can be reached in three. Philadelphia International Airport is only a thirty-minute car ride from Mullica Hill. Mullica Hill, NJ is a unique area in that it offers both the slower paced agricultural atmosphere within the surrounding area, while at the same time providing superb schools and close access to major US cities and New Jersey’s infamous sandy beaches. There is something here for everyone.
