Some Christians are fond of saying that children and youth are the church of tomorrow The corollary is that if we want the church to survive we must inculcate our beliefs and values in the lives of the young Respectfully we disagree Children and youth may or may not be the church of tomorrow but they most surely are the church of today Treating them as present-day members with their own gifts to share and their own challenges to bear is the only way they will ever become the church of tomorrow We are pleased to announce that beginning January 29 we

will be sharing our faith with our younger members in a monthly Sunday morning youth class On the last Sunday of each month from now through April our Rector will meet with our young people to explore the basics of the Christian tradition from how the Bible was written to what Christians have believed then and now to what modern faith looks likemdashfor them Information will be imparted but more important the actual lived experience of our young people will be honoured Some may choose to go on to be confirmed but this is not a Confirmation class per se It gathers young people who are ready to think for themselves while exploring their faith For those who do seek to be confirmed a separate class will be offered in May For now though we get to learn from them just as they will learn from us

The Third Sunday after Epiphany

The first Sundays in the New Year reflect a common theme how God revealed to the Gentile world the plan of salvation through his Son Jesus Christ

This theme builds on the visit of the Magi which we celebrate on January 6 the Feast of the Epiphany and continues with Jesusrsquo baptism and through the early days of his public ministry

To all who receive him he gives power to become children of God

Opening Prayer (the People remain standing) God of our salvation the splendour of your glory dispels the darkness of the earth for we see in Christ the nearness of your realm Now make us quick to follow where he beckons eager to embrace the work of the Gospel for the sake of him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit one God for ever and ever Amen

The Opening Prayer identifies the guiding theme of todayrsquos service

Psalm 271 5-13

You O God are my light and my salvation

whom then shall I fear You O God are the strength of my life of whom then shall I be afraid One thing have I asked of you O God one thing I seek

that I may dwell in your house all the days of my life

to behold your fair beauty

and to seek you in your temple

The First Reading and Psalm are taken from the Hebrew Scriptures the Old Testament

3

For in the day of trouble you shall keep me safe in your shelter

you shall hide me under the cover of your dwelling

you shall set me upon a rock high up and out of reach

Even now you lift up my head high above my enemies round about me

Therefore I will offer in your dwelling an oblation with sounds of great gladness I will sing and make music to you

Hearken to my voice O God when I call have mercy on me and answer me

You speak in my heart and say Seek my face Your face O God will I seek

Hide not your face from me nor turn away your servant in displeasure

You have always been my helper cast me not away nor forsake me

to reconcile us to you the Creator of us all On the night he was handed over to suffering and death a death he freely accepted our Lord Jesus Christ took bread and when he had given thanks to you he broke it and gave it to his disciples and said ldquoTake eat this is my body which is given for you Do this for the remembrance of merdquo After supper he took the cup of wine and when he had given thanks he gave it to them and said ldquoDrink this all of you this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins Whenever you drink it do this for the remembrance of merdquo We pray you gracious God to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice that we made acceptable in him may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit

FIRST READING Isaiah 91-4 A Reading from the Book of Isaiah There will be no more gloom for those who were in anguish In the former time God humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali but in the latter time the way to the sea will be made glorious the land beyond the Jordan Galilee of the nations The people who have walked in darkness have seen a great light those who lived in a land of deep darkness mdashon them light has dawned You have multiplied the nation O God you have increased its joy they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest as people exult when dividing plunder For the yoke that burdened them and the weight on their shoulders the rod of their oppressor you have broken as you did at the defeat of Midian Listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches Thanks be to God

SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 110-18 A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians Now I appeal to you brothers and sisters by the name of our Saviour Jesus Christ that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose For it has been reported to me by Chloes people that there are quarrels among you What I mean is that each of you says I belong to Paul or I belong to Apollos or I belong to Cephas or I belong to Christ Has Christ been divided Was Paul crucified for you Or were you baptized in the name of Paul I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas beyond that I do not recall whether I baptized anyone else) The point is Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospelndashand not with eloquent wisdom lest the cross of Christ be robbed of its power For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing but to us who are being saved it is the power of God Listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches Thanks be to God

GOSPEL READING Matthew 412-23 The Lord be with you And with thy spirit The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew Glory be to Thee O Lord

on the road by the sea across the Jordan Galilee of the Gentiles

the people who have walked in darkness have seen a great light those who lived in a land of deep darkness

mdashon them light has dawned From that time Jesus began to proclaim Repent for the kingdom of heaven has come near One day as he walked by the Sea of Galilee he saw two brothers Simon known as Peter and Andrew his brother casting a net into the seamdashfor they were fishermen And he said to them Follow me and I will have you fishing for people Immediately they left their nets and followed him As he went from there he saw two other brothers James son of Zebedee and his brother John in the boat with their father Zebedee mending their nets and he called them Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him

SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 110-18 A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians Now I appeal to you brothers and sisters by the name of our Saviour Jesus Christ that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose For it has been reported to me by Chloes people that there are quarrels among you What I mean is that each of you says I belong to Paul or I belong to Apollos or I belong to Cephas or I belong to Christ Has Christ been divided Was Paul crucified for you Or were you baptized in the name of Paul I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas beyond that I do not recall whether I baptized anyone else) The point is Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospelndashand not with eloquent wisdom lest the cross of Christ be robbed of its power For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing but to us who are being saved it is the power of God Listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches Thanks be to God

the people who have walked in darkness have seen a great light those who lived in a land of deep darkness

mdashon them light has dawned From that time Jesus began to proclaim Repent for the kingdom of heaven has come near One day as he walked by the Sea of Galilee he saw two brothers Simon known as Peter and Andrew his brother casting a net into the seamdashfor they were fishermen And he said to them Follow me and I will have you fishing for people Immediately they left their nets and followed him As he went from there he saw two other brothers James son of Zebedee and his brother John in the boat with their father Zebedee mending their nets and he called them Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him

Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested he withdrew to Galilee He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled Land of Zebulun land of Naphtali

You have always been my helper cast me not away nor forsake me

whom then shall I fear You O God are the strength of my life of whom then shall I be afraid One thing have I asked of you O God one thing I seek

that I may dwell in your house all the days of my life

to behold your fair beauty

and to seek you in your temple For in the day of trouble you shall keep me safe in your shelter

you shall hide me under the cover of your dwelling

you shall set me upon a rock

high up and out of reach Even now you lift up my head

high above my enemies round about me Therefore I will offer in your dwelling an oblation with sounds of great gladness I will sing and make music to you Hearken to my voice O God when I call

have mercy on me and answer me

PROPER 3 YEAR A

God be with you And also with you The Good News of Jesus Christ according to Matthew Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ

Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested he withdrew to Galilee He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled Land of Zebulun land of Naphtali

on the road by the sea across the Jordan Galilee of the Gentiles

the people who have walked in darkness have seen a great light those who lived in a land of deep darkness

mdashon them light has dawned From that time Jesus began to proclaim Repent for the kingdom of heaven has come near One day as he walked by the Sea of Galilee he saw two brothers Simon known as Peter and Andrew his brother casting a net into the seamdashfor they were fishermen And he said to them Follow me and I will have you fishing for people Immediately they left their nets and followed him As he went from there he saw two other brothers James son of Zebedee and his brother John in the boat with their father Zebedee mending their nets and he called them Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him

to reconcile us to you the Creator of us all On the night he was handed over to suffering and death a death he freely accepted our Lord Jesus Christ took bread and when he had given thanks to you he broke it and gave it to his disciples and said ldquoTake eat this is my body which is given for you Do this for the remembrance of merdquo After supper he took the cup of wine and when he had given thanks he gave it to them and said ldquoDrink this all of you this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins Whenever you drink it do this for the remembrance of merdquo We pray you gracious God to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice that we made acceptable in him may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit

PROPER 3 YEAR A

PSALM 271 5-13 You O God are my light and my salvation

whom then shall I fear You O God are the strength of my life of whom then shall I be afraid One thing have I asked of you O God one thing I seek

that I may dwell in your house all the days of my life

to behold your fair beauty

and to seek you in your temple For in the day of trouble you shall keep me safe in your shelter

you shall hide me under the cover of your dwelling

you shall set me upon a rock

high up and out of reach Even now you lift up my head

high above my enemies round about me Therefore I will offer in your dwelling an oblation with sounds of great gladness I will sing and make music to you Hearken to my voice O God when I call

have mercy on me and answer me

PROPER 3 YEAR A

You speak in my heart and say Seek my face Your face O God will I seek Hide not your face from me

nor turn away your servant in displeasure You have always been my helper cast me not away nor forsake me

O God of my salvation

PROPER 3 YEAR A
