ST. THERESE - LITTLE FLOWER ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
ST. THERESE – LITTLE FLOWER ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH May 10, 2020
Dear Parish Family,
Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers! I hope all mothers will find a way celebrate
their day with family.
Mother’s Day is a day to cherish our mothers or our memories of our mothers.
When I think of my mother, I think of her deep faith and of her willingness to make
any sacrifices necessary for my brother and me. Yesterday, May 9, was the 33rd
anniversary of her death. At the same time, because there are no perfect mothers
(just as there are no perfect children), in the words of an old Irish blessing: “May
you never forget what is worth remembering, or remember what is best forgotten.”
Thursday we celebrate the Feast of St. Matthias, Apostle. St. Matthias replaced
Judas as one of the Twelve Apostles.
Friday we remember once again Fr. John C. Riedinger, Little Flower’s pastor from
1942-1966. Fr. John was born on May 15, 1882. Fr. John was almost 60 when he was appointed pastor of Little Flower. He retired
when he turned 84. When I was in school, Fr. John’s birthday usually meant a free day (rarely), a shortened day, or extra recess. It
was on May 15, 1962, his 80th
birthday, that the steeple was placed on the church. The entire school, the Scecina band, many
parishioners, and many neighbors were present. They first took a picture of Fr. John at the controls of the crane. However, after the
steeple was placed on the church, Fr. John rushed over to the crane operator and told him that it was facing the wrong direction.
They had to take it down. Everyone left because they were not going to try again until after lunch. Many returned in the afternoon.
When I was ordained in 1975, I was assigned as associate pastor at St. Malachy, Brownsburg. The pastor was Fr. Charles Noll, who
had been ordained in 1940 in the convent chapel at Oldenburg. Today is the 39th
anniversary of Fr. Noll’s death. In the homily for
my 40th
anniversary, I said, “I learned what it means to be a priest and pastor primarily from the priests and pastors in my life.”
Msgr. Francis Reine, his classmate, gave the homily at his funeral noting several of Fr. Noll’s wonderful qualities. For example,
Msgr. Reine made much of Fr. Noll’s ability and willingness to laugh at himself. According to Msgr. Reine, Fr. Noll’s “greatest
concern and care and love were for young people, with whom he seemed to enjoy a special rapport.” One thing he said during the
homily really struck me. Fr. Noll and Monsignor Reine often traveled together, and they had taken a trip to Europe to celebrate
their 40th
anniversary of ordination. In his homily, Msgr. Reine said,
Just last fall as we rushed through the itinerary I had planned for our vacation trip, he told me several times,
“Frank, you’re a tourist. I’m a traveler.” He was right–I wanted to see and experience the thrill of visiting new
places. He wanted to stop and mingle with and talk with new people.
I have often thought that this distinction could also be applied to life itself. Are we tourists or travelers?
Have a blessed week, and stay safe.

ST. THERESE – LITTLE FLOWER ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH May 10, 2020
As most of you are aware St. Vincent de Paul was unable to hold its Easter Egg 5K Run/Walk on Holy Saturday. To replace the Easter Egg 5K we are launching the St. Vincent de Paul Love Your Neighbor 5K Run/Walk. Our 5K will be virtual this year to raise funds to address the urgent needs of people in our community. Participants can run or walk the race any time during May 29 – June 12. There will be four race courses across Indianapolis to make the race convenient for runners and walkers in any part of town. You may also opt to race anywhere that is convenient for you.
This is a great opportunity to get some fresh air and exercise and support the neighbors we serve. Did I mention we also have sponsorship opportunities? 100% of all sponsorship dollars go directly to primarily support our Food Pantry where we are currently serving a record number of households.
Please go to our website www.svdpindy.org to register and discover our sponsorship opportunities. We can only continue to support the ever-evolving needs of our community if we are in this together. This is a perfect opportunity to … Love your Neighbor! Questions? Darlene Sweeney [email protected].
Stuff A Truck With Good Stuff For Good Purpose
Have you been busy cleaning out your closets, cupboards, and garages while you’re home? St. Vincent de Paul is in dire need of material donations – clothing,
household goods, linens, furniture, etc. We also need bicycles, helmets, locks and backpacks for our homeless neighbors.
During the month of May, St. Vincent de Paul is organizing a Stuff A Truck campaign. We will have our trucks at the following locations ready to receive your donations:
May 16 – St. Christopher – 5301 W. 16th Street
May 30 – St. Mary – 317 N. New Jersey Street
The SVdP truck will be parked in the parish parking lot on the Saturday designated above from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. To adhere to social distancing, simply drive up, unload your donations and place them by the truck. After you leave, our staff will load the donations into the truck. Please put your clothing and other soft goods donations into plastic trash bags and household items in boxes. We reserve the right to reject any donations of furniture that are broken, badly soiled or severely damaged in any way.
This is a win-win for everyone. Eliminate all the excess gently used goods in your home and we can replenish our supply for our neighbors in need. You may go to http://www.svdpindy.org/i-want-to-help/#goods for a list of items we do not take. Thank you for Helping Us – Help Others. Questions? Darlene Sweeney [email protected].
