Today’s feast of the Presen- tation of the Lord seems to extend the Incarnation celebration a bit longer. In fact, some have called this feast a “second Epiphany.” The first reading recalls the anticipation of Advent, as Malachi writes, “Lo, I am sending my messen- ger to prepare the way before me.” The reading from Hebrews reminds us of the Incarnation, pro- claiming that Jesus had a “share” in our own “blood and flesh.” The Gospel finds the infant Je- sus on his first visit to Jerusalem and his human parents once again surprised and in awe over the events surround his birth. In the simplicity of the manger, in the grandeur of the temple, in the domesticity of Nazareth, Jesus comes. May we come to know him and so be filled with “wisdom” and the “favor of God.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

A CHRISTMAS REPRISE

The Church’s celebration three weeks ago of the Baptism of the Lord signaled the “official” end of the Christmas season. Today’s feast of the Presen-tation of the Lord seems to extend the Incarnation celebration a bit longer. In fact, some have called this feast a “second Epiphany.” The first reading recalls the anticipation of Advent, as Malachi writes, “Lo, I am sending my messen-ger to prepare the way before me.” The reading from Hebrews reminds us of the Incarnation, pro-claiming that Jesus had a “share” in our own “blood and flesh.” The Gospel finds the infant Je-sus on his first visit to Jerusalem and his human parents once again surprised and in awe over the events surround his birth. In the simplicity of the manger, in the grandeur of the temple, in the domesticity of Nazareth, Jesus comes. May we come to know him and so be filled with “wisdom” and the “favor of God.”

PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Altar Guild will be having their first Valen-tine’s Bake Sale & Raffle fundraiser on the week-end of February 15-16 after all the weekend Mass-es. We invite you to buy tickets for the gift baskets we will be raffling off, and/or purchase one of the delicious homemade bake sale items. The Guild will start selling tickets for the raffle after each Mass beginning the weekend of February 1-2. Tick-ets are just $1/ticket. This fundraiser is in lieu of the White Elephant Sale that the Guild has previ-ously had. If you had items that you were saving up to donate to our sale, some suggestions for groups you can donate them to are: St. Vincent de Paul, Napa’s Community Projects store, Goodwill, or the DAV that do curb side pick-ups (Disabled American Vets).

VALENTINE’S BAKE SALE & RAFFLE

St. Thomas is preparing food for the “Table” at the Presbyterian Church every third Thursday of each month. Please consider do-nating to help provide food for

the less fortunate. We need potatoes, carrots, ham, green beans, and milk. You may call the parish office to sign up for items that you can do-nate. Items may be brought to the office prior to the third Thursday. Thank you!

THE TABLE THE SPIRIT OF THE LITURGY

Series on Pope Benedict's The Spirit of the Liturgy. Don't miss the opportunity to learn about the clas-sical work of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI about our highest form of prayer and worship. What does it mean to worship God? How ought we to under-stand the Liturgy? If Jesus came to bring “worship in Spirit and truth”, why do so many Christians worship in a particular place (church), at a particu-lar time (Sundays), following a particular pattern of worship (liturgy and ritual)? Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI answers these and other important questions in his classic work, The Spirit of the Lit-urgy. Explore his answers as theologian & teacher Mark Brumley leads a nine-session course based on The Spirit of the Liturgy. Classes begin Thurs-day, January 16, and continue January 23 and 30; February 6, 13, 27; March 5, 12, and 19. All ses-sions begin @ 7:00 P.M. at Kolbe Academy-Trinity Prep, 2055 Redwood Rd., Napa. No charge. Dona-tions gratefully accepted.

We will have the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Friday, February 7th, from 9:00am to 9:00pm. Please come and join us for Adoration on this First Friday. We invite you to sign up for an

hour of adoration. The sign-up sheet is on the parish bulletin board in the church hall. Please consider signing up for an hour to ensure we have every hour covered, and hopefully more than one person per hour can come. We will have the celebration of mass at 12:00pm.

BLESSED SACRAMENT ADORATION

This weekend we are celebrating the presentation of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Family fol-lowed the tradition of presenting Jesus to the temple. This is a tradition that still is going on in some parts of the world. The way that a child is presented varies according to the culture and people. The main essence of the presentation is that the child is presented to God as a sign of thanksgiving for the child, but also to ask God to fill the child with His grace so the child will grow in His faith. We do not have to be children or be presented to God to be able to adopt this attitude. All of us are called to do this: give thanks to God and to ask for His help in our spiritual journey. I am planning retreats and workshops for our parish to help us spiritually grow in our faith and I hope that all of you take advantage of these opportunities. In the meantime, I will pray that the Lord may bless all of us as we continue to give thanks to God and ask Him for His grace to grow in holiness.

May God continue to bless our families and parish of St. Thomas,

Fr. Abel

Gospel: Lk 2:22-40 When the days were completed for their purifica-tion according to the law of Moses, Mary and Jo-seph took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be conse-crated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accord-ance with the dictate in the law of the Lord. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, await-ing the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Is-rael, and to be a sign that will be contradicted --and you yourself a sword will pierce-- so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phan-uel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but wor-shiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.
