The Coming of the Spirit - La Venida del Espíritu.

Acts/Hechos 2:1-11 1 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. 2 And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. 3 Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. 5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem.6 At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.7 They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how does each of us hear them in his own native language? 9 We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome,11both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.” 12

Welcome!

Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Acts of the Apostles 2:8

[The] religious life is an attitude that permeates the whole of one's personality and the whole of one's life, but it also needs a place in which it can be lived with greater intentionality. - Sofia Cavalletti, The Way of Holy Joy, p.40

Our experiences with children in the atrium show us a place where we can live a contemplative life with greater

intention, permeated with an awareness of how to live as Sofia writes, "the whole of one's life," contemplatively. We, as catechists in the atrium, have the responsibility to help the child live their relationship with God with “the whole of one’s life.” In the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, we give the child time and space for prayer to develop this relationship. We recognize that we need to be using the child’s familiar language, their “mother tongue.” A bilingual environment takes a fundamental role in the prayer life of a child, where the child can live the contemplative life with greater understanding and intention

We find that in the USA, our children come from many different situations. There is the child of immigrants who does not speak English and who finds joy and welcome in the familiarity of his mother tongue. The child who is truly bilingual, speaking their mother tongue at home and English at school. This child can move between the languages at their own pace and rhythm. For this child there is a need for us to be able to speak with their parents in the primary language of the family so as to collaborate with them. There is also the English speaking child who has the primary language of the family used for the religious life because Grandma is the one nurturing their religious formation.

How do we assist the child who lives at home in one language, whose prayer language may be one language while at the same time be a child whose language at school or any other place may be English? What do we need to be sensitive to in serving the child who is bi-lingual? In preparing to serve bilingual communities we need to consider the following: What is the prayer language of the child? How do we prepare adults to work in a bilingual environment? How do we prepare a bilingual environment? How do we educate the families in the community in order to work together as one community with two languages?

¿Cómo es que cada uno de nosotros los escuchamos en nuestra propia lengua? Hechos 2:8

[La] vida religiosa es una actitud que permea toda la personalidad, pero también necesita un lugar en el cual pueda vivir con propósito. - Sofía Cavalletti, “The Way of Holy Joy, p. 40”

Nuestras experiencias con los niños en el atrio nos muestran un lugar donde podemos vivir una vida espiritual con mayor propósito, impregnada con una conciencia de cómo vivir como Sofía escribe "toda la vida" contemplativamente. Como catequistas en el atrio tenemos la responsabilidad de ayudar al niño a vivir su relación con Dios con "toda la vida". En la Catequesis del Buen Pastor le damos al niño tiempo y espacio para la oración, para desarrollar esta relación. Reconocemos que necesitamos usar el lenguaje familiar del niño, su "lengua materna". Por esta razón, vemos que un ambiente bilingüe toma un papel fundamental en la vida de oración de un niño, donde él puede vivirla de una manera contemplativa con mayor entendimiento e intención.

Encontramos que en los Estados Unidos, nuestros niños vienen de muchas situaciones diferentes. Esta el hijo de inmigrantes que no habla inglés que encuentra alegría y acogida en la familiaridad de su lengua materna. El niño que es verdaderamente bilingüe, habla su lengua materna en casa e inglés en la escuela. Este niño puede moverse entre las lenguas a su propio paso y ritmo. Para este niño es necesario que podamos hablar con sus padres en el idioma primario de la familia para colaborar con ellos. También esta el niño de habla inglesa que tiene el idioma principal de la familia utilizada para la vida religiosa porque si los papas ambos trabajan fuera, muchas veces la abuela es la que nutre su formación religiosa.

¿Cómo ayudamos al niño que vive en casa con un idioma, el cual lo utiliza para rezar, mientras que al mismo tiempo es un niño con otra lengua en la escuela o en cualquier otro lugar que puede ser el inglés? ¿Qué necesitamos para ser sensibles al servir al niño que es bilingüe? Al prepararnos para servir a comunidades bilingües debemos considerar lo siguiente: ¿En qué idioma reza el niño? ¿Cómo preparamos a los adultos para trabajar en un ambiente bilingüe? ¿Qué necesitamos para preparar un ambiente bilingüe? ¿Cómo educamos a las familias en la comunidad para trabajar juntos como una comunidad con dos idiomas?

The Gift of Wisdom

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. James 3:17

Closing Prayer: OraciÓn de cierre Together: God of love and of life, let us take time to look deep within ourselves and discover the gifts you have blessed us with. May we take the time to direct our lives in a way that best uses our own unique combination of gifts. May we discover where our strengths and interests lie. May our faith guide us in realizing our gifts. May we always be open to the direction of the Spirit and never forget the love you have for each of us. Give us, O Lord, the perception we need to look within ourselves and discover the beauty and gifts we posses. Give us the courage to show others the talents they have. Help us serve others in the community and in so doing build up your kingdom. We ask this through Jesus, our Lord. Amen.
