TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Two centuries ago, Archbishop John Carroll worried that Americans would not appreciate the linguistic veil over our worship, and asked that the liturgy in the new United States be in English, not Latin. How did our liturgy come to be in Latin in the first place? In the first century, the dominant language in the regions where the church first flourished was Greek. Today in much of the world, almost everyone speaks at least a bit of English. Recently, the European Union even considered making English its official language, a curious proposal since only two English-speaking countries are members. Just as English is a unifying language today, it was hard to function in the ancient world without a smattering of Greek. Even the word “Eucharist” comes from the Greek for “thanksgiving.” For a long time, Greek was the language of worship, even in Rome. Slowly, society in the west shifted to a bias for Latin and against Greek. Latin first appeared in public prayer at the end of the second century, in the colonial outposts of North Africa. Soon, Latin became the language of culture, and so as fixed prayer forms were written, they were transmitted in Latin. From Rome and Africa, over the next four centuries, the new liturgical language of Latin spread north to Gaul and Britain.

Stephen Ministry

Have you ever felt alone or hopeless? Do you often have the feeling of despair? Jesus asks us that we, "Trust in Him." Sometimes it's one of the hardest things to do, especially when life takes a turn into a downward spiral and things seem to be piling up against us. The pain of losing a loved one could be unbearable and 'trust' seems impossible to reach in anyone and

sadly yes, even our trust in God fades. Our ministry is full of loving and deeply caring individuals ready and willing to help. A Stephen Minister is someone that will come visit with you for one hour a week and pray with you or just listen. If you or perhaps

someone you may know could use a friendly smile, a Stephen Ministry is ready to accommodate. Please remember complete confidentiality is observed.

For more information please call Ann - 619 757-0181 or Melanie -909 797-9804 Do you feel called to become a Stephen Minister? Training starts in September. Inquire within.

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8)

Reflection: The teaching of Christianity on the sanctity of life does not flow from some historical circumstance, political ideology, or changing opinion. It is based on the person of Jesus Christ, who does not change. He is the perfect reflection of the Father, the source of all life. That is why the Church holds that its pro-life teaching "is unchanged and unchangeable" (EV, 62). Prayer: Lord Jesus, you are the solid Rock of our faith and of our pro-life commitment. As you are unchanging, so give us the constancy and fidelity of perseverance until the end of our journey. Amen.

Amen.

Respect

Come Pray the Rosary

We say the Rosary for all your prayer requests every Friday at 12pm in the Chapel.

Everyone is welcome!

After the Rosary, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy is prayed.

Fruit Of The Word

The seed is the word of God. The agricultural metaphors in all of today’s readings give richness to the message that the word of God, cultivated in our hearts, bears much fruit in our lives. Creation itself awaits the redemption of all, even as our bodies await the resurrection. Just as we will rejoice in the fulfillment of God’s word, so will all of creation sing for joy in the Reign of God. The word of God is effective and holy; it brings about exactly what it says. It is not futile or empty, but rich in meaning for those who hear and are healed. Those who hear the word of God and keep it will, with all creation, bear much fruit and sing for joy.

Questions of the Week

Question for Children: Who helps you to grow deeper in your faith? Question for Youth: When the sower, in this week’s Gospel, sowed his seed, not all of it fell in “good soil.” What can you do in the coming week to make sure that you are open to God in your life? What is getting in the way of your being “good soil?” Question for Adults: Using the parable of Jesus in this reading, describe how faith has been planted in your life? How long did it take for that seed to land “on good soil?”
