Dear Parish Family,

By now, all registered parish households have re-ceived a brochure detailing our “I am St. Thomas” Program which we will participate in over the next few weeks. This informa-tive brochure is intended to communicate the financial needs of St. Thomas the

Apostle Parish and why we are having a dedi-cated focus on our parish offertory. Commit-ment Sunday for this Program is next week-end, September 9/10. As part of our Commitment Sunday, Mrs. Chris Berta will speak at all of the masses. Chris, along with her husband Jeff and their children Tom and Kate, have been very active parishioners of St. Thomas the Apostle for eleven years. Chris and Jeff have both served on our Parish Pastoral Council and have been Religious Education catechists. They are also Eucharistic Ministers and serve as Eucharistic Minister Captains. We encourage everyone to spend time in prayer and discussion with your family re-flecting on our parish’s needs and your current level of giving. We look forward to seeing all of our parishioners at Mass next weekend for this very important Commitment Sunday. If you have any questions about the increased offertory program, please feel free to contact me.

A Note from our Pastor...

A Prayer for Our Parish Christ Jesus, we believe that you give us a cross as a gift to enable us to share in the freedom that you alone can give. Help us to let go of all the things that keep us far from you. Help us to embrace your cross so that it may become our cross, our gift, our hope, and our path to new life. Amen.

Reflecting on the Readings… In the Gospel today, Jesus calls us to take up our cross and follow him. And, in the second reading, St. Paul urges us to offer our “bodies as a living sacrifice.” He goes on to remind us, “Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. We are all called to promote the will of God, which is often in conflict with the ways of our society. Listen closely to God challenging us with unexpected re-sponsibility. What is God inviting you to do today? Labor Day – Sept 4 There will be only one liturgy on Monday, September 4 at 9:00 a.m. to celebrate Labor Day. The offices are closed and the Church will be locked after this Mass. Pet Blessing St. Thomas’ annual pet blessing takes place Sunday, October 1 at 1:00 p.m. in the south yard by the labyrinth. Bring your furry, finned, or flying friend for a prayer service and blessing in honor of St. Fran-cis, the Patron Saint of Animals. All pets are welcome!

Faith and Formation Commission—Adult

C.A.R.E. CORNER Let's begin this series by getting on the same page with regard to our terminology. We'll start with fear. Fear is a feeling of dread or concern that arises be-cause we have reason to believe there is an imminent threat or danger. For example, we might wake up at night fearful because we heard a loud and unfamiliar noise inside our house. Or we might fear the repercus-sions from a severe weather event. The northern sub-urbs suffered through some big rain storms in July. Many people living in those areas had fears about flooded homes as they watched the rain continue to pour down, the streets flood and their lawns pool with water. These are actual, potential dangers at hand and they fill us with fear and apprehension. When Jeanne Cotter, our Artist in Residence was here in Spring to present our Mission, she talked about the current brain research that shows the human brain automatically tends toward the negative. Any situation kicks in what she called the “default mode network,” which automatically scans for danger. It's part of our animal instinct. Apparently we spend 90% of our energy reacting and assuming the worst. Do you often feel uneasy and troubled? It's no wonder - fear seems to be wired into our brains.

Seek. Ask. Find. The GOSPEL for the 1st and 21st Centuries

Sept 3 – Matthew 16:21-27

Most people want to serve God - but only in an advisory capacity, says a tongue-in-cheek sign. Jesus tells Peter that this is not how it goes. Can we keep our ego in check? An acronym for ego is “edging God out.” Ask yourself “Can I, or do I even want, to surrender to God?” The Gospel of John “Believing in me you will find life” Do you choose to “walk with Christ?” What draws you to faith and life in the Spirit? Come and explore your call to be a beloved disciple of Jesus as presented in the Gos-pel of John. The Thursday Morning Scripture Study will meet from 9:15 to 11:15a.m. in the Senior Center from September 7 through May 31. This is an interactive study, combining prayer, study and discussion. Make a full-time commitment, drop in whenever you can, or just “come and see.” Everyone is welcome – no previous Bible knowledge is necessary. For more information, contact the facilitator, Chari Rosales, Director of Adult Faith Formation, at 630.355.8980 x138 or [email protected]. To register (by Sept 1), contact Marge Coronado at 630.355.8980 x118 or [email protected]. The Gospel of Matthew: From Promise to Fulfillment This “Good News,” which stands at the head of the New Testament, is the link between the two Testaments and has been called the “Charter of the Kingdom of God.” This Bible Study, led by Audrey Easton (graduate of the Biblical Institute of the Diocese of Joliet) and her team will meet on Fridays from 9:15 to11:15 a.m. beginning September 8, and continuing through May 18, 2018. En-joy small group discussion and personal reflection. To participate, RSVP by September 1 to Marge Coro-nado at 630.355.8980 x128 or [email protected]. &

Coffee Conversation

InSight Forum: Our Relationship With Nature Nature’s powerful beauty is easy to appreciate and many people say that is where they most often glimpse God. But do we ever consider what our relationship with Nature requires of us? When we engage with our natural surroundings rather than gazing from afar, we are called into communion and wholeness. With that relationship comes responsibility fostered by mutual respect. September’s readings and discussion will examine this topic through Anthony DeMello’s essay “Serpents and Doves,” an interpretation of the Creation from the book of Genesis, and the poem “Field Guide” by Tony Hoagland. Come ex-plore the essence that unities us to the Earth and also to each other. In-Sight is a discussion forum to share our life experience through the lens of literature. Meetings are typically the fourth Tuesday of the month. You are invited to come on September 26 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. to the Senior Center. Reserve a spot at the table by contacting Marge Coronado at 630.355.8980 x118 or [email protected].

St. Thomas Ladies Marathon Bridge The St. Thomas Bridge group is preparing for the 2017-2018 season and has openings for new players. Bridge is played once a month from September to May in the home of members. Players of all levels are welcome. To sign up or for more information, contact Sue Randolph 630.375.6755 or [email protected].

Church-Building 101: Letters of St. Paul What does being a Christian look like, sound like, act like? Do you want to be one? St. Paul thought long and hard about questions like these, and shared his answers with communities he en-countered. Take up these questions through the Thursday Evening Scripture Study, which meets from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the Senior Center from September 7 through May 31. We live in a world increasingly questioning if a Chris-tian life is relevant or even desirable. Come and explore the questions regularly or as often as you can through in-teractive evenings melding prayer, conversation and study. Seeker, new Christian or lifelong Catholic - there’s some-thing here for everyone. The facilitator is Chari Rosales, Director of Adult Faith Formation. To participate, contact Marge Coronado in the Faith Formation Office at 630.377.8980 x118 or [email protected] by Sep-tember 1. Soul Searchers Begin Sessions September 9 Martin Laird, an Augustinian priest, says, “Silence is necessary if we are to hear God speaking in eternal si-lence.” Laird writes about the Christian practice of con-templation and the wisdom of the Desert Fathers in his book, Into the Silent Land. St. Thomas Soul Searchers is a monthly discussion group that meets on the second Saturday in the Rectory Basement from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. The next meeting of Soul Searchers is September 9; the reading is Chapters 1-3. Call Mary Maloney (630.369.0397) for further infor-mation. Come whenever your schedule allows and enjoy a thought-provoking experience. All are welcome to attend.

RAINBOWS Volunteer Needed RAINBOWS is a group sharing sessions for the children (Kindergarten through 8th grade) who are dealing with the loss of a parent due to divorce, sepa-ration, or death. Since it is necessary for emotional healing to take place after a significant loss, the sup-port group provides those who are grieving with an opportunity to share their feelings in an accepting and confidential environment led by trained, compassion-ate adults who are good listeners. The St. Thomas RAINBOWS program is in need of another adult facilitator for a small group. RAIN-BOWS training is available online, and, in addition, one must take the Protecting God’s Children work-shop and have a background check. Sessions are held at St. Thomas the Apostle Church from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. on Saturday mornings, beginning Saturday, September 16 with an initial meeting on September 9. If interested or have questions, please contact Patti Dougherty, 630.355.8980 ext. 109 or email [email protected].

Sunday Nursery Opens Sept 10 Please come and check out the St. Thomas Sunday Nursery, held during the 9:30 and 11:15 a.m. masses. The nursery is located off the hall by the Ministry Center entrance and children of walking age through the age of three are welcomed. At age four, children may begin attending the Liturgy of the Word sessions offered during these two mass times. Parents are encouraged to be a part of the nursery schedule, but need to complete Diocesan requirements before helping. Teen volunteers are welcomed as well. Information on these requirements as well as registra-tion forms, are available on the nursery door. There is also the option of paying a fee of $3 per child per Sun-day. The nursery is open after Labor Day until Memorial Day and is closed on some holy days. For more infor-mation, contact Patti in the Faith Formation Office at church 630.355.8980, ext. 109.

Faith and Formation Commission—Youth

? Families: Take some time to discuss and reflect on the readings.

Question of the week… In what ways do you live out self denial?

TWO WAYS… to Help Your Child During Mass St. Thomas offers a Sunday Nursery and Liturgy of the Word with Children during the 9:30 and 11:15 a.m. mass-es to help your child, and you, during the Sunday Liturgy.

The Sunday Nursery The Sunday Nursery will reopen on September 10 and is available for children who walk until they turn age four. There is a nominal fee of $3 or free when you volunteer. The nursery would love to have your help!

Liturgy of the Word with Children Liturgy of the Word (L.O.W.) is for children who have turned age four (and able to attend on their own) through Grade three. This begins September 24 until April 22 except on Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and Easter Sunday. If your child is not age four by September 24, please wait until they turn age four to begin L.O.W. Children begin mass with their parents until they are in-vited by the Priest to attend their own “Liturgy of the Word”. They leave just before the assembly starts the Readings and return after the Prayers of the Faithful. They go into meeting rooms in the Ministry Center. It helps if parents sit in the same area so children know where to go when returning to church as Liturgy of the Eucharist begins. There is no registration and children of the above ages may attend either mass.

Please contact Patti Dougherty if interested in helping with the Sunday Nursery or Liturgy of the Word or with any questions 630.355.8980 ext. 109 or [email protected].

100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima Join the Rosary Rally on October 14 at Noon This year marks the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima’s appearances to three shepherd children. Our Lady’s message was to pray the Rosary daily for world peace and the conversion of sinners. In response to Our Lady’s message, the parishes of St. Thomas and St. Irene in Warrenville are uniting to form a Rosary Prayer Chain, under the umbrella of the America Needs Fatima “Rosary Rally Initiative.” At Noon on October 14, partici-pants will join over 20,000 Rosary prayer chains praying the Rosary. Join us! Sign-up sheets and more information are in the Gathering Area or sign up via email. Contact St. Thomas parishioner, Lourdes Chew, [email protected], or St. Irene’s parishioner, Jeannette Clark [email protected].

Liturgy of the Word with Children Needs Your Help! Liturgy of the Word with Children begins on Sunday, September 24 at the 9:30 and 11:15 a.m. liturgies. This is for children who have turned four through Grade three. Once a child turns four they can attend. There is no sign up and either mass is fine. More help is needed—both adults and youth! Two teams are formed to allow more flexibility when there is a conflict for someone. Both assistants and facilitators (those who walk the children to and from mass) are needed. Anyone over age 18 that works with children must take Protecting God’s Children and have a background check. St. Thomas will host a PGC workshop on Thursday, Sep-tember 21 at 6:30 p.m. There are other PGC sessions avail-able at other churches. Please consider bringing God’s Word to the little children. Contact Patti Dougherty at [email protected] or 630.355.8980 x 109 for information or help with registering for a PGC workshop. Protecting God’s Children Facilitator Needed Our Diocese of Joliet has established requirements for every parish, priest, all employees and volunteers in ac-cord with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People established by the Bishops of the United States. The Protecting God’s Children (PGC) sessions are a very pro-active, positive, professional approach that can be most helpful for families in our parish, as well as in other school, playground, or youth activity settings. While PGC sessions are primarily for all staff and volunteers, they are also open to any parent or person from the parish who wishes to attend. St. Thomas prefers to have two facilitators working together, presenting this workshop. At this time, we have a need for a new facilitator. Two-day training is required, along with a background check. Please contact Patti Dougherty in the Faith Formation Office for more infor-mation.

Service Commission—Outreach & Social Justice Statement of Bishop R. Daniel Conlon-Diocese of Joliet- Regarding Racism August 25, 2017 On August 23, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops established an Ad Hoc Com-mittee against Racism. This action was taken in response to recent incidents in our country, most notably in Charlottesville, Virginia, that indicate a heightened tension over racial concerns.

In one sense, it seems remarkable that such a decision by the bishops was considered neces-sary. As someone who, as a teenager and a young adult, witnessed the race riots and civil rights movement of fifty years ago, I hoped that our country had moved beyond such attitudes as white supremacy. On the other hand, it is not surprising that generations of legalized slavery, both before and after the constitutional establishment of the United States, would have an enduring legacy.

It is not just bigotry that troubles our nation. There are pockets of disrespect for Jews and Muslims, for immigrants, for persons who are aging and handicapped, for homosexuals, even for unborn children. A lack of respect for those who are different from oneself goes all the way back to Cain and Abel, one who was a shepherd, the other who was a crop farmer.

This effect of Original Sin, although to be expected, is never right and never acceptable. As children of the same God, with the same dignity and rights, we have an obligation to treat each other with fairness and respect.

When we Catholic leaders speak out on this subject it is from this perspective, the fundamental dignity of the human person as a child of God. Our position is based on long-standing Catholic social teaching. It is not motivated by politi-cal affiliation, economic advantage, sectarianism or any other bias, other than our belief in God and the love of Jesus Christ.

I call on others, especially the Catholics of the Diocese of Joliet, to join my brother bishops and me in thinking, speak-ing and acting in ways that will help to heal the divisions currently affecting our country. Of course, we must also seek divine assistance. We can – and must – do better for the sake of everyone.

Peace Pole Dedication-Sunday, September 17 What is a Peace Pole? Peace Poles are one of the most recognized international peace symbols and monuments around the world. Over 20,000 poles have been “planted” in 190 countries. The Peace Pole Project was introduced to the United States in 1986. Peace Poles symbolize the oneness of humanity and the common wish for a world at peace. They remind us to think, speak, and act in the spirit of peace and harmony and to stand as a silent visual for peace to prevail on earth. The St. Thomas Peace Pole, initiated by the Pax Christi ministry, is a six-sided stainless steel pole, about eight feet tall once the pole is in the ground. The words “May Peace Prevail on Earth” is cut into the pole in six languages: Arabic; English; Hebrew; Haitian Creole for St. Thomas’ twinning parish in Duchity, Haiti; Lakota for St. Thomas’ twinning parish on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota; and Spanish for St. Thomas’ twinning parish in Auro-ra, Illinois. The St. Thomas Peace Pole will be dedicated after the 11:15a.m. Mass on Sunday, September 17. Come to the dedication and say a prayer for peace!

This is a great Mission Trip to build Community with the people of the Mississippi Delta and the Community at St. Thomas the Apostle. Everyone is welcome! Governor Rauner signs the Trust Act On Monday, August 28, Governor Bruce Rauner signed into law the Illinois Trust Act. The law prohibits state and local police in Illinois from detaining, searching, or arresting a person solely because of their immigration status or based on a federal immigration detainer. The law will allow law enforcement officials to hold someone if a judge has issued a warrant. Before the governor inked his signature to the bill, Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti, a fluent Spanish speaker, kicked off the speeches with remarks in both English and Spanish in which she insisted that, “contrary to popular belief, this bill does not turn Illinois into a sanctuary state.” Instead, she said, “it will help us keep violent crimi-nals behind bars.” Illinois State Police Director Leo Schmitz said the leg-islation “reinforces local, county, state ability to work with the federal government and our federal partners to protect the neighborhood.” He and others said that the legislation would allow immigrants to reach out to local law enforce-ment without fear of punishment for their immigration status.

Miracle of the Month (St. Thomas has a relationship with Waterleaf Women’s Center and a number of St. Thomas parishioners volunteer there.) “Linda” was very surprised to be pregnant when she arrived at Waterleaf. She was parenting two children alone, was in a new relationship, and the father of the baby was not supportive of the pregnancy. Though she had nev-er believed in abortion growing up, she saw it as a viable option considering her situation. Her Client Advocate met with her at length and provided options. She agreed to re-turn for an ultrasound. When she returned for the ultra-sound, she was interested in the images, but was still am-bivalent about the pregnancy. The Waterleaf team dis-cussed focusing on her educational and career goals, as they were still attainable, and the assistance available at the Education and Resource Center (ERC). The team pro-vided constant follow-up and was happy when Linda agreed to head to the ERC for classes and referrals. Linda was excited to bring along images from her 12-week ultra-sound to show the team in Bolingbrook! She was much more at ease with the pregnancy and appreciative of Wa-terleaf’s support. She was pleased to announce the birth of her beautiful baby girl in late summer!

Suicide is a major preventable cause of premature death, which is influenced by psycho-social, cultural and environmental risk factors that can be prevented through worldwide responses that address these main risk factors. There is strong evidence indicating that adequate preven-tion can reduce suicide rates. World Suicide Prevention Day, which first started in 2003, is annually held on September 10 each year as an International Association For Suicide Prevention (IASP) initiative. The World Health Organization (WHO) co-sponsors this event. World Suicide Prevention Day aims to: Raise awareness that suicide is preventable. Improve education about suicide. Spread information about suicide awareness. Decrease stigmatization regarding suicide.

Kindergarten Begins New School Year

It was with great anticipation and a bit of nervousness that our kindergartners began the school year this past week! We have been covering rules, routines and procedures… and slowly becoming acclimated to the long days. We have learned about Zero the Hero, are practicing making the Sign of the Cross properly, and have been introduced to our Won-ders reading curriculum. The class is thrilled to have gym every day, with art and music every other day as well. Next week they will begin Spanish! The students are also very excited about eating lunch and having snacks at school!
