Fathom the Mystery We never learn whether Thomas did touch Jesus or not, but every second Sunday of Easter we are told this story about Thomas and the risen Lord. It encourages us to fathom the mystery that is our faith, to learn to penetrate it by confessing Jesus as Lord and God, then allow this belief to flow out into our daily activities, reaching out to embrace others. Don’t you think when Thomas left the upper room that day he knew that the Resurrection was not something to keep to himself? That his whole being was filled with the warmth and light absorbed from being in the pres-ence of the risen Lord? It is possible that this can hap-pen to us? Have you begun to fathom the mystery of the Res-
urrection? Living the Word

From the Pastor's Desk Dear St. Veronica Parishioners,
An Easter Spiritual Reflection---Joy and Sorrow Then a woman said, “Speak to us of Joy and Sorrow.” And he answered: Your joy is your sorrow unmasked. And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears. And how else can it be? The deeper the sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain. Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter’s oven? And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives? When you are joy-ous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy. When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight. Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.” But I say unto you, they are inseparable. Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed. Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy. Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced. When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and silver, needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall. ---Kahlil Gibran Reflection: Easter brings with it the unmistakable explosion of joy symbolized in the lilies. Who can deny joy at Easter? After the terrible tragedy and death, Jesus is totally entitled to his joy. It is the way his Father wants it. Joy is the outcome of the fullness realized in the new life that Jesus experiences. The disciples of Jesus, too, had gone through horrible disillusionment and distress at the death of Jesus. They were almost certain that the new life for Jesus was an unthinkable possibility, and yet it is a reality now. Their sorrow has turned into joy. Resurrection had seemed too good to be true, but now they have the responsibility of mov-ing from an extreme form of sorrow and sadness to the other end of the spectrum of complete joy and victory. What an unbelieva-ble gift this joy is in the new life of Jesus and their own! However, as Kahlil Gibran expresses poetically and insightfully, joy and sorrow are two sides of the same coin: one leads to the other, one causes the other, one is based on the other, one is min-gled in the other. They are “relational” realities because you know one in terms of the other. It is impossible to understand or appreciate one without the other in the way, for instance, night cannot be understood without day. To the extent one is able to suffer the sorrow of life, one is able to relish the joy of it. In the measure in which one is able to delight in joy, sorrow seems not unbearable or meaningless. Why do we weep when we experience great joy? In the experi-ence of intense ecstasy, tears seem a natural thing. The expres-sions “tears of joy” and “aching joy” seem contradictions at first sight, and yet they are an intimate part of human nature. Like-wise, we are haunted by sadness, which speaks straight to our souls. Hence Shelley sings in his poem “To a Skylark”: “Our sincerest laughter with some pain is fraught; Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought.” Isn’t it true that happy songs do not “grab” us as the sad ones do? Wordsworth’s poem “The Solitary Reaper” is a meditative song on the haunting quali-ty of a sad song of a poor reaper. About the Irish, G. K. Chester-ton declares: “All their wars are merry and all their songs are sad.” Wallace Stevens proclaims: “Death is the mother of beauty; hence from her alone shall come fulfillment to our dreams and
our desires.” Edgar Allan Poe says that the “death of a beautiful woman is unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world.” Even the most dreaded death generates beauty, and “a thing of beau-ty,” as Keats feels, “is a joy forever.” The borderline, therefore, be-tween sorrow and joy seems porous. Out of the death of Jesus, a beauty is born, which has the power to enthrall us forever. The resurrection of Jesus has the power to fill us with joy. Jesus promises: “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy” (Jn 16:20). He comforts us: “I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you… ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full” (Jn 16: 22-24). Fullness of joy is part of our Christian life: “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full” (Jn 15:11). “If you loved me you would have rejoiced” (Jn 14:28). The same Jesus who consoles us with such abiding joy does not remove the necessity of the cross and sorrow: “Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” (Lk 24:25). Without the cross, there is no possibility of be-ing with Jesus and experiencing the joy of the resurrection: “If any-one wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Lk 9:23). “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heav-en. Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you” (Mt 5:10-12). “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Mt 5:4). Jesus offers us both sorrow and joy; tears and laughter; the cross and resurrection, not as separate realities but as one revealing the other, as one giving birth to the other. We who strive to follow Jesus expe-rience joy shining through sorrow and see sorrow giving rise to joy. To be Christian is to be deeply human in being able to accept that joys and sorrows are inevitable, that they both are ever present in each other, and that through the intermingling of both we shall fulfill our destiny as human beings and work out our redemption. Action: When you see joy in the world, go deeper into it to be able to discern that it is sorrow that makes that joy possible. When you see suffering, know that it is joy that is waiting to be born. Accept your own life as a redeeming fusion of sorrow and joy, without a desire to cling to one at the cost of the other. Understand clearly that in the cry of the sorrowful, there is a yearning for joy; in the wild abandon of joy, there underlies the truth of sorrow. Use your person-al, psychological, and spiritual resources to lead the suffering to joy. Those who rejoice will derive the strength to bear the inescapable sorrow, thanks to your perception and presence. With Warm Wishes for a Blessed Easter Season, Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota
Parishioner of the Year Nancy Jones
It is with great pleasure that Veronica “Nancy” Jones has been selected to receive the 2012 St. Veronica Parishioner of the Year award. Nancy began her volunteer career at St. Veronica Parish in 1977 when Fr. Dan Derry asked her to become a Eucharistic Minister. Her family already grown and figuring soap operas were not her cup of tea, Nancy accepted and ministered not only at Mass but also to the homebound. She has remained devoted to her church and parish as a volunteer wearing many hats to this very day. Nancy has shared her talents with our youth as a catechist. She’s been there to answer the call providing transportation for the infirmed, and has been a dutiful member of the Parish Altar Society since 1980. Nancy’s character speaks for itself. Today Nancy is no stranger to the wee hours of the morning. She can be found in the church prior to daily Masses as she makes sure the environ-ment is in good order for the daily celebration. Whether it is replenishing candles, removing candle wax from the carpet, or sweeping the sacristy or vestibule, she stealthily and without fuss goes about being a steward for her church. Although she celebrated a milestone birthday earlier this year, she will be “29 forever.” It can easily be said Nancy is a woman full of grace and pa-tience with a generous heart. In succinct but sincere words, Nancy puts her faith in action and is a wonderful role model for all of us. You are cordially invited to honor Nancy Jones and other hon-orees from neighboring parishes on

Lenten Almsgiving Results
Thank you all for making our Lenten Almsgiving such a suc-
cess. The toiletries you donated arrived in the nick of time as the Gubbio Project had just run out of supplies for their guests. Thank you for providing over 1,000 cough lozenges, over 300 tubes of toothpaste, over 250 toothbrushes, and an abundant supply of socks, hats, floss, combs, soaps, shampoo, lotions, conditioners, etc. You HAVE made a difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco.
Also, calls for food steadi-ly increased as Easter ap-proached and with your help our parish St. Vincent de Paul Society was able to fulfill all the requests for food from our pantry.
Divine Mercy Sunday April 15, 2012
