Staff Connection... Immaculate Conception Church Parish Mission Statement George Green Parish Center 113 North Geneva Street Ithaca, NY 14850 *** 607/273-6121 Immaculate Conception Catholic Church celebrates the Eucharist and proclaims the gospel—in worship, through our love of God and for each other, and with our ministry to the marginalized. We journey together in our faith, united by our trust in Christ’s love and mercy and the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, commonly known as Corpus Christi”. The Bishop has declared the Year of the Eucharist to commence this Sunday June 18 and to con- clude on June 3, 2018. I am sure you all have read the Bishops pastoral letter on this theme. I would encour- age everyone to read it again. Its loaded with great enriching message. What a wonderful way to celebrate 150 years of our beloved Diocese! The Church of Christ was founded to celebrate the Eucharist. We all know that Jesus instituted the Eucharist at His last Supper which He had in a large upper room with His disciples. It has always been my dream to one day go to the Holy Land and celebrate Mass in the sacred place where the first Mass was celebrated by Jesus himself. I know some you our parishioners have visited the upper room as pilgrims. Many people may never travel to Jerusalem to see for themselves where the First Mass was offered but that, of course is not necessary. The Mass has come to us right here in our Church. In our local parish community we have the privilege to be present daily, or at least every Sunday at Mass and Holy Days of obligation to celebrate the Eucharist. For us Catholics, we believe in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. We read the story of the Israel- ites how God allowed them to be hungry in the desert and then fed them with manna to show them that it is not by bread alone does man live, but by every Word that comes forth from the mouth of GodDeut. 8:3. The same Word became flesh in the person of Jesus, who is now present in the Eucharist. This demands deep faith. Jesus said Take this, this is my Body. This is my BloodIn the Eucharist, Jesus has given us Himself in a form that we can touch and experience Him. The Holy Eucharist must be received in faith, ac- cepting the commitment that comes with sharing in the Body and Blood of Christ. The Year of the Eucharist invites us to be Eucharistic people. Reception of the Eucharist is a communion of the very life of Jesus. In the Eucharist Jesus nourishes our spirits not only for this life but for eternal life as well. All those who partake of the Body and Blood of our Lord are united people. Eucharist unites its recipi- ents into one Body of Christ. To be Eucharistic people means to be a caring people. Sharing in Communion is a sign that we desire to be transformed into the likeness of Christ, and to live practically the love of Jesus in every detail of our lives. During this year of the Eucharist I invite everyone to do basic things faithfully. Attend Mass every Sunday and Days of obligation and whenever possible attend the daily Mass. Commit yourself to daily prayer and practice simple devotions that will help nurture your faith. Encourage family and friends to attend Mass. Meditate on the Scripture so as to discover the new aspects of the person of Christ. Celebrate the Sacrament of reconciliation on a regular basis. Practice charity and remember to pray for more vocations to the priest- hood in our Diocese. We need many priests in our local and Universal Church. There are so many people who go for many months without the opportunity to celebrate the Eucharist. Happy Feast! Fr. Chumo Sacraments Baptism: A preparaon session is required before the bapsm of your child. Please call 273-6121 prior to your due date for an appointment. Reconciliation: Saturday 2:30P—4PM Marriage: Please call 273-6121 at least 6 months in advance of your ancipated wedding date. Anointing of the Sick: Call 273-6121 to request this sacrament. Have you ever read or heard something and absolutely took those words as the absolute truth Have you ever seen it on Facebook or Twitter and ldquolikedrdquo or ldquosharedrdquo or ldquochirpedrdquo (oh I guess they call it Tweeting huh) what you read because it seemed factual I came across a post by a friend of mine on Facebook about some statistics they heard on a national radio show compared between 2 different states They blasted the policies of one state because the statistic affected 30000 teens in that state That is a large number but I ended up doing some digging be-cause I was skeptical of how the story was portrayed The fact is the one statersquos total population is 27 million people as opposed to the other statersquos 545 million people I did some further digging and the figures came out to be 64 of every 1000 teens affect-ed in the larger state and 46 of every 1000 teens affected in the small-er one So the percentages are only just over 6 in the larger one and 46 in the smaller one Donrsquot get me wrong the numbers are not great but to portray the statistics between the two states as this huge difference and a result of policy is crazy to me There is more to de-bate and discuss about it but I wonrsquot do it here The point is the reaction of my friend to totally blast policies based on a single number and NOT based on the whole picture (let alone the totally unbalanced comparison of the two states) can cause us to rush to quick judgment and force us to quote something that fits our own argument without THINKING CRITICALLY about things So donrsquot take everything you hear on the radio or see online as total-ly accurate Think critically about what you are reading Question it Test it It may be totally factual but it may also be inaccurate and lead you to wrong conclusions ldquoDo not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind that you may discern what is the will of God what is good and pleasing and perfectrdquo Romans 122
