1. A WORD OF WELCOME

A warm welcome to the Environmental Science section of the Department of Applied Science.

As a new member of the Environmental Sciences, the HoS and the staff would like you to bear

in mind that we are always ready to help you. As an initial step, this orientation manual is

purposely prepared for you so that you will be properly informed, guided and be aware of the

important details about the section and its program. Nevertheless, queries are most welcomed

and definitely will be entertained with a hope that confusion and doubts will be cleared.

The Head of Section is open to sorting out queries and clearing any confusion which can be

properly and personally done in her office. Moreover, the Head of Section is open to suggestion

and improvement. The use of e-mail as a means of communication with the HoS and the staff

members is also encouraged. An Office Coordinator is assigned to the Office of the HoS to assist

the HoS in some office and clerical works. However, concerns of staff can be relayed to the HoS

through the Office Coordinator.

The section has competent staff members who believe in teamwork and very willing to help

you as you go through your academic journey in the College be it as a teaching staff or as a

laboratory technician.

The department has a registrar and academic coordinators who would gladly and ready to

assist you when you need them and clear some doubts regarding academic affairs and concerns

in the department. Their names and locations are included in this manual.

The life of the section revolves around giving quality education and service to the students. The

section fully supports the endeavor of the College to give priority to students. The section

expects therefore that each staff member manifests this endeavor through their words and

actions when they teach and deal with the students inside and outside the College.

2. INTRODUCTION

The Environmental Science Section is a newly-emerged section of the Applied Science

Department. At present, the section has seven lecturers and four technical support staff. As

background information, it is noteworthy to mention that the Ministry of Manpower approved

the offering of Environmental Science Program as a new specialization in the Department of

Applied Sciences of Higher College of Technology in 2003. The desire of the government to

harmonize the socio-economic development and the preservation of the biodiversity, in

particular and the environment, in general, justifies the demand for this specialization.

The Environmental Sciences Program reflects the aim, goals and objectives of the Department

of Applied Sciences which is translated in the operational level through the use of concrete

learning activities and experiences as reflected in the syllabi of the different courses under the

program. The curriculum reflects a clear cut goal for human and national development and for

practical experience directly related to the professional roles for which the students are being

prepared. The curriculum shows a balanced treatment of all branches of Environmental Science

with the inclusion of recent advances and current topics

The Environmental Sciences Program is divided into three exit levels namely, diploma,

advanced diploma and B. Tech. A supervised and properly evaluated “on-the job training” (OJT)

at industrial sites for 8 weeks is integrated in the program. Successful completion of the training

programs will entitle the student to obtain an official certification from the College.

Academic Staff in the Environmental Section. There are 13 Environmental Science staff

member. Regular section meetings are held in which all staff are free to verbalize their opinions

and collective decisions are taken. All DC decisions that the staff members must know are

presented and discussed during section meetings if not circulated via e-mail. A lecturer may

also be assigned as academic adviser and or course coordinator. The names of the academic

staff are in Appendix 1.

Technical Staff. There are 4 laboratory technicians and 1 instructor under the section. They

are assigned to be in charge of the ES Dark Room (M110), ES Project Lab (M111), ES Storage

Room (M112), and ES Teaching Lab (M113). The names of the technicians/instructor are in

Appendix 2.

3. THE ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE PROGRAM

Before entering the Department of Applied Sciences, a student clears a year of foundation

program.

The program starts with Diploma Year I in which students enter the Department of Applied

Sciences. At the end of Diploma Year I, students are specialized into Applied Chemistry or

Applied Biology. A third specialization, Environmental Science, is on the anvil and is likely to

start shortly.

The second level is Diploma Year II. At the end of this level students with an overall CGPA of

2.50 can go to the next level, Advanced Diploma or Higher Diploma level. Those who fail to

attain this CGPA exit the college with a Diploma in Chemistry after undergoing on-the-job

training. A minimum score of 390 in the in-house TOEFL is also a pre-requisite to entering the

Advanced Diploma level.

Similarly, a student at Higher Diploma should obtain a CGPA of 2.75 to reach the B. Tech level.

Students who fail to do so exit after on-the-job training. The degree plan of Environmental

Science program is presented in Appendix 3.

4. THE DELIVERY PLAN

Every course taught in the department has a delivery plan associated with it. This is a

document given to all students registered in each course. This document contains the

following:

The course name, course code and pre-requisites

The timing & venues of the course

The lecturer name, contact information & office hours

A brief description of the course

The objectives & outcomes of the course

A detailed delivery plan indicating the weekly coverage of outcomes and relevant

materials

Assessment plan

Passing grades

Rules & regulations regarding attendance & disciplinary violations

A sample delivery plan is given in Appendix 4.

5. ACADEMIC ADVISING

Another very important aspect of life in the Higher College of Technology is Academic Advising.

Each staff member is assigned around 20 -25 students. The advisor is responsible for advising

the courses required by the advisees. The advisor also provides mentoring for the advisees and

maintains records of his/her advisees. The content of the adviser’s file is shown in Appendix 5.

However you are not likely to be given this responsibility in the current semester. You will be

provided with appropriate orientation for this later.

The Student Handbook containing the rules and regulations of the college is an excellent

reference for you.

6. THE COURSE COORDINATOR

When a course is shared between many lecturers, one of them is assigned as a course

coordinator. He/she deals with day-to-day problems and coordinates with all the lecturers.

Responsibilities of the Course Coordinator

The course coordinator calls for a meeting of all lecturers in the beginning of the

semester where the overall delivery of a course is discussed.

All tasks related to a course are assigned in this meeting. This includes identifying staff

responsible for setting tests, mid-terms, assignments and the final exam. Further the

moderators should also be assigned.

The course coordinator’s file is maintained by the coordinator. The contents are given

in Appendix 6.

The course coordinator consolidates the results at the end of the semester as per the

instructions of the examination committee.

The course coordinator ensures that all Quality Assurance related documents are duly

completed and submitted as required by the QA coordinator. This includes course

evaluation by staff and students.

7. LECTURER FILE

As a lecturer, you should maintain a lecturer course file for all your courses. The contents of

the lecturer file are given in Appendix 6.
