ANGEL FUND —RED BAG TUITION ASSISTANCE

Through your generous support to the Angel Fund/Red Bag Collection you are helping pro-

vide financial assistance to a number of school families. These funds enable par-ents to send their children to SSPP School, where they receive a quality Catholic educa-tion and have access to an academic pro-gram that has excelled at preparing children for their years of education beyond SSPP. During the last fiscal year, July 1, 2014—June 30, 2015, the Angel Fund/Red Bag Collection received $17,878.56 in donations and in October of 2015 the fund received a donation of $3,262.00 from the Diocese. Be an angel & give generously to the Angel Fund / Red Bag Collection that will be taken up during the Masses March 19 and 20.

The Prodigal Son Parable is one of the most touching and telling of Jesus’ sto-ries. He is being criticized for his association with the ‘tax collectors and sin-ners’…even eating with them. The religious leaders question and can’t under-stand how Jesus…the holy one…could associate with the likes of those peo-ple. Jesus proceeds to tell three stories about the ‘lost’ to help get across the point of God’s mercy.

Jesus tells of the ‘lost sheep’…the ‘lost coin’…and finally the ‘lost son’. Each of them is a dramatic expression of God’s love and mercy that goes far beyond human expectations and heals the division and separation caused by sin.

The lesson about the ‘lost son’ helps us to see the Father’s love in an extraor-dinary way…to the point that the lesson might also be called ‘the loving Father’ because of his extra-ordinary love and mercy showered upon the wayward boy. The Father completely restores the boy to full status as his ‘son’ and member of the household. But he also shows extraordinary love toward the angry older brother who feels like he has been a slave in the household and now is unwilling to forgive his younger brother.

God reaches out to us and invites us to accept his forgiveness. He is the one who heals the separation of our human family from him in the gift of his Son. Jesus is that gift…the face of the Father’s Mercy…who reconciles the whole human race by his perfect act of love in his death and resurrection.

This week continues the theme of mercy and forgiveness with the lesson com-ing from John’s Gospel. It is the story of the woman caught in the act of adul-tery and the religious leaders trying to catch Jesus in the bind between the Law (Torah) of Moses and the law of the Romans. Jesus outwits them again through the display of extraordinary mercy… ‘Let the one among you who is without sin cast the first stone’… ‘Has no one condemned you?...Neither do I condemn you…’

Jesus did not come to condemn…but to save! Are we ready to receive the gift of his mercy…and be instruments of mercy toward others?

Holy Week…begins with the celebration of Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Pas-sion…March 19-20th. We celebrate the victory of Christ over sin and death and pledge our faith and love for him as our Lord, Messiah, and King. We bless palms and walk in procession singing and praising him wishing to faithfully fol-low him even unto death.

Palms…will be blessed at each of the Saturday & Sunday Masses (Mar. 19-20th) as part of the entrance Rite into the church. On Saturday 4:30 PM Mass & Sunday 8:00 AM Mass the blessing will be on the front porch of the church & the procession will proceed through the front door to the Altar & our pews. Sunday 10:30 Mass…will begin a little **early at 10:15 in the Gym and proceed through the front doors of the church to prepare for the reading of the Passion.

Chrism Mass…and the blessing of the Holy Oils will be Tuesday, Mar. 22nd in Springfield. Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper will be 7:00 PM & adora-tion until 11:00 PM. Good Friday services will be held at the traditional time of 3:00 PM in the afternoon. Holy Saturday Vigil Mass (1st Mass of Easter) will be at 8:30 PM with the service of Light, Initiation, and Mass. Easter Sunday will be at the normal times of 8:00 & 10:30 AM on Easter morning! Asbestos abatement…in the old office/rectory will begin on April 4th. There will be a dumpster near the garage doors near the Sacred Heart entrance to the church on the south side near the school. Red Bag…collection will be the weekend of Palm Sunday…Mar. 19-20th.

We currently have 150 stu-dents registered for next year. It is a great help to have registration num-bers as soon as possible. Our technology requires purchasing licenses and it is very hard to purchase one at a time. There is also significant savings when purchasing in bundles. Our annual trivia night was again a great success. Although there was a lot of competition with other events, we were able to nearly match last year’s total by making $5,700 profit. Thank you to all of the workers, sponsors, and players who made this possible. It was nice to see some new parent workers. Thank you! Our 5th and 8th grade students recently received the results of the an-nual ACRE test. This test measures the knowledge of our Catholic faith. We had seven 8th graders and six 5th graders score at the Advanced level. In addition, 81% of the 8th grade and 75% of the 5th graders scored proficient or higher. Each grade scored well above the national average. Nichole DuVall (5th grade) had a perfect 100% score on the ACRE test. She is our first student to ever have achieved a perfect score.

years of age and over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.

2. Fast— Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 is required to Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these two days of fast and ab-stinence, only one full meatless meal is permitted. Two other meat-less meals, sufficient to maintain strength may be taken according to each person’s needs, but together these two should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids (including milk and fruit juices) are allowed. 3. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is se-riously sinful.

Could You Not Watch One Hour With Me Can you give the Lord one hour of your time? Each Thursday during Lent, ex-

cept Holy Thursday, the Blessed Sacrament will be placed on Exposi-tion after the last Mass of the day until 6:30pm when Benediction & Closing Prayers will be held. At 1:35pm there will be Benediction for the school children and the parish is invited to participate in this service.

Stations of the Cross During Lent the Sta-tions of the Cross will be said on Friday at 1:40pm for the school children and any pa-rishioner who would

like to join them and on Wednesday March 16 there will be a live presen-tation of the Stations of the Cross by students from SSPP School starting at 6:30pm.

Easter Egg Giving Basket

Beginning the week-end of Feb. 20-21, there will be an Easter

Basket at the front of the church filled with Easter Eggs. Each egg will contain a slip of paper with an item on it that will be used to make Easter baskets for the families we had on our Advent Giving Tree. For Christmas, we focused on food, clothing and toys. For Easter, we will focus on toiletry items and clean-ing supplies. There will also be $10 donation eggs. The money will be used to buy children’s bibles. The items will need to be returned by March 20th. Please bring them to the Baptismal Room and leave them in the containers marked Easter Bas-kets. Cash donations can be left in the moneybox. Please do not bring the money until the weekend of March 19-20. By providing Easter Baskets to the same families we had at Christmas, we will be letting them know we are still thinking of them and praying for them. We will con-tinue practicing the Spiritual and Cor-poral Works of Mercy. If you have any questions, contact Debbie at 345-7939, 444-9247, or debbiel-

[email protected].

Worldwide Marriage Encounter, Belleville/Springfield Encounter Jesus has such compassion on the woman in the gospel reading today as he forgives her and gives her mercy and grace instead of judgment and condemnation. We are called to ex-tend that same love and compassion to others, especially in our marriage relationship. The next Worldwide Mar-riage Encounter Weekend on April 22nd to 24th. Divine Mercy Study The Feast of Mercy is celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter, that is on the Second Sunday of Easter, which is called the Divine Mercy Sunday. On the day of Sr. Faustina’s canonization, April 30, 2000, the Pope instituted the feast for the whole Church. The institution of the feast was in-spired by a desire of Jesus which was conveyed by Sr. Faustina. The Lord Jesus told her: I desire that the first Sunday after Easter be the Feast of Mercy (Diary 299) I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a ref-uge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender Mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of My Mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened (Diary 699) Pamphlets about the Divine Mercy Sunday and the Novena said the nine days before that Sunday can be found at all the entrances to the church. Join the Divine Mercy Group as they examine the Diary of St. Faustina and pray the Chaplet every first and third Wednesday of each month at 1:00pm in Morris Hall. For more in-formation call Mary Helen at 345-9730.

ZIGGY’S WISDOM: What are your priorities, and is it time for a change?

ZIGGY’S THOUGHTS: Priorities fall into two categories, du-ties and desires. It’s duties we’ll think about now. Ask: In my state of life, do “cover the bases” that would be for every Godly person of my age, not the least of which is...daily prayer? THAT’S IT: daily prayer is the loving duty for all ages, for all of us!

SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL HOLY THURSDAY COLLECTION

“Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” Mt. 25:40

Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s Lenten collection will be taken during Holy Thursday evening Mass. Your generous support has allowed SSVDP to serve the needy of our community for over 65 years. Financial contributions provide those who call for help with food and other supplies. Parishioners, Scouts, and our Youth Group supply the pantry with non-perishable food and give financial assistance throughout the year. When supplies run low, SSVDP pur-chases needed items. Your contributions allow SSVDP to match CAMA contributions to pay power and water bills for clients who are in danger of shut-offs. During this year of Mercy, our SSVDP will focus on donating food and supporting the KC Ladies Auxiliary’s Tote Me Home Program. SSVDP works closing with Collinsville Area Ministerial Alliance, ABL Pregnancy Center, Township and other agen-cies to maximize support for its clients. Because of your support, SSVDP remains in good financial standing, and its members are grateful.

Year of Mercy Learn, Experience,

Share

The Corporal Works of Mercy: Give Drink to the Thirsty As we look at each work of mercy individually, think about how you are already performing that work. We know that there are many examples ongoing in our parish. Our focus should be to understand how we are sharing God’s mercy, think of ways to do it more often and better, and find opportunities to share our ex-periences to encourage others to join us. If everyone did one more work of mercy each day, how could that change our world! Although we take clean water for granted in our community, many of our brothers and sisters in Christ do not have access to clean water and suffer from the lack of this basic necessity. We should support the efforts of those working towards greater ac-cessibility of this essential resource. Some ideas: Research, identify and contribute financially to organizations

that help build wells for water for those in need Visit the Catholic Relief Services website at www.crs.org to see how this organization is helping with clean water ef-forts throughout the world

Organize a group of children involved on a sports team or a summer camp. Invite them to do a project that helps those in need of clean water.

“The Beating Heart of the Gospel” Pope Francis writes: “It is absolutely essential for the Church and for the credibility of her message that she herself live and testify to mercy.” Mercy, he says, is “the beating heart of the Gos-pel” (Misericordiae Vultus). To live mercy, we must rediscover both the spiritual works of mercy and the corporal works of mercy.” Which works of mercy might Christ be calling you to practice?

The “Other” Thirst We can also think of giving drink to the thirsty in terms of our spiritual lives. The Gospel of John relates the story of the Samaritan Woman at the Well. It addresses the thirst we all have. Jesus said: “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of wa-ter welling up to eternal life.” We all thirst for this water of eternal life. In Baptism we re-ceived this living water. As disciples charged with taking the Good News to all, we should also be aware of our role in sharing this great gift with others. Bless the Lord, my soul; All my being, bless his holy name! Who pardons all your sins, And heals all your ills, Who redeems your life from the pit, and crowns you with mercy and compassion. Psalm 103: 2-4

The diocese serves each of us, and our financial support is needed to continue God’s work in the diocese. This year our assessed amount is $88,750 and as of Feb.. 9 a total of 296 parishioners have given $69,667 toward this assessed amount. We can meet this as-sessed amount if we all, once again, give our fair share this year as we did last year. If you are among the group of pa-rishioners who have not contributed to the ACSA, please prayerfully con-sider how you can help your dioce-san Church family with a donation to this appeal.
