From the Desk Of Fr. John Epiphany! Blessed Holy Nativity of the Lord Jesus Christ! Merry Christmas! All of the above give the greetings of this Holy Season. Epiphany is traditionally celebrated on January 6…but to make it convenient for all of us…here in the U.S. it is transferred to the nearest Sun-day. The word Epiphany means a… ‘Showing forth’ or what we might say… ‘Manifestation,’ the original feast was the ‘appearance or manifesta-tion of God’ that was the feast of Christ’s birth. The feast in the western part of the Church has become the manifestation of Jesus to the na-tions…symbolized by the visit of the Magi. We often call them kings…who come to the King of kings offering Him their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. In the Eastern part of the Church…they celebrate Jesus being made manifest by the guidance of the star to the Magi…the Baptism of the Lord and the voice of the Father revealing Him to us…and the scene of the first sign/miracle of Jesus at the wedding feast at Cana changing water into wine. It is a true feast of manifestation of Jesus as the Son of God and Savior of the world. But let us look back at the last few celebrations…Christmas and the Nativity of Jesus…The Feast of the Holy Family…The Feast of Mary the Moth-er of God. One after another unfolds for us the manifestation of Jesus as God’s Son and Savior of the world. Our world may only focus on Christ-mas as a passing remembrance…a social day for family…a cultural feast of giving and getting gifts. However, the Christian world sees the reve-lation of God’s love for all of humankind…and more. With the feast of Mary the Mother of God, we revisited the scene of the shepherds coming to Bethlehem to see what the angel had re-vealed to them. They were blessed with this spe-cial revelation even though they were not of the elite of the community. Not only that…they were not considered faithful in the practice of the faith…unclean and sometimes not so honest in their dealings with others. But the Lord chose to reveal the mystery to them…he welcomed

them…and showered His love upon them. Mary kept all these things in her heart and deeply re-flected upon them. We need to reflect upon this wonderful revela-tion…about a Savior born for us…and who wel-comes us. As we experience His love and warmth…and reflect upon the meaning of this encounter with God in Jesus. We are called and we have responded in faith to accept him…but it is now time to put that faith into action. Can we extend welcome to others who do not speak our language…dress differently than we do…have different practices and cultures? As we look to our borders…and around the world we see so many rejected and treated with little or no re-spect…some places with great disregard…even children. God’s love revealed…shows His willingness to come to us…to give Himself to us…to be one with us…our Emmanuel ‘God with Us.’ Can we then become the messengers of faith and love to others…and to our world…teaching them the way of God…and clearly demonstrating it for them? The Feast of the Epiphany does bring into fo-cus the guidance of the Star, which lead the Magi to search for the ‘newborn King of the Jews.’ They willingly followed the great dis-tance that it took to reach Jerusalem…the capital of the Jewish people. But they had no idea where the new King would be born…so King Herod asked all of his advisors and the scribes and ex-perts to tell him. They discovered in Holy Scrip-ture that the Messiah was to be born in Bethle-hem…the city of David. The Magi faithfully followed the star to the place where Jesus was…and offered their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. These men were not Jewish…but Gentiles…and that gives us in-sight…that the gift of the coming of the Son of God…the Messiah…was meant for more than the chosen people…but for everyone. Let us be so faithful in coming to the Lord for worship…but also so faithful in sharing our faith with others.

If you didn’t get the parish Christmas book given to each family attending Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses, they are still available at the church doors. This year’s parish gift is Re-discover the Saints by Matthew Kelly. The book continues Matthew’s focus on how we can achieve ho-liness—become saints—one holy moment at a time. We can become saints—we must become saints. Only saints go to heaven. Matthew says we are capable of so much more than we think. “You have no idea what you are capable of. None of us do. God is constantly trying to open our eyes to the amazing possi-bilities that He has enfolded in our being. The saints continue this work, encouraging us to explore all our God-given potential, not with speeches, but with the example of their lives.”

Prayer Blanket a Very Special Ministry

The Prayer Blanket ministry at our parish is a great example of our discipleship, combining prayer and community faith sharing for those suf-fering illnesses or going through difficult times.

The ministry members com-mit to prayer as they do their part in the making of the blanket. This involves shop-ping for mate-rial, coordinat-ing fabric, sewing ironing and tagging with the recipi-ent’s name. After comple-

tion, the blankets are placed on the altar railing and blessed by Father John during Mass thus “covering with prayer” the individual who receives it. This transforms the blanket into a Prayer Blan-ket whose very threads become interwoven with pleas for healing on behalf of the recipient. The Prayer Blanket brings comfort to the suffer-ing. When one sees and touches these blankets, they know they are not alone—they are covered in prayer and know there are many who do care about them. This ministry originated at a hospital in Houston where the chaplain found that they so uplifted the patients that she began to deliver them a regular basis. It has spread around the world, with blan-kets being given to those in hospitals, home-bound, cancer support groups and orphans. God has used this ministry to touch the lives of many in our parish. If you are in need of a prayer blanket for some-one, please contact the parish office at 345-4343.
