Fourth Sunday of Lent From the Rector Very Rev. Joseph Tizio, C.Ss.R. Sometimes you read the most surprising things in the most sur- prising places. Two weeks ago I read a wonderful article about Lent in The New York Times Magazine. To say the least, I was great- ly surprised to read a Lenten reflection in The New York Times! The article was written by Rachel Howard and in it she speaks of her conversion to Christianity, being baptized in the Episcopal faith. In speaking about Lent, she says: “Lent provides space for your guilt. This is not about cultivating bad feel- ings but slowly disrobing them, letting them reveal their true nature.” Lent is actually a positive season, a season when we unflinchingly look at the destructive feelings and tendencies within us, rather than hide those feelings and tendencies, we confront them with gentleness and compassion, trusting in God’s transforming love and forgiveness. The writer spoke of her divorce and how on one Holy Thursday, the full force of what had happened touched her. Realizing that she had married for security, she states “I married him selfishly”. In confronting her true feelings and seeking forgiveness and reconciliation, she found healing. She concludes the article with these words: “The season is a passage, moving us from paranoia to metanoia, from being literally out of our minds to being reconciled with our true minds through repentance. Depravation itself can be a gift.” We are beginning the fourth week of Lent, we are literally right in the middle of the season. Most of us spend our year running away from unpleasant feeling, denying our guilt and weakness. It is the power of Christ who passed from the horror of death into new life which can transform the death within us into new and vibrant life! Fourth Sunday of Lent

From the Rector Very Rev. Joseph Tizio, C.Ss.R.

Sometimes you read the most surprising things in the most sur-prising places. Two weeks ago I read a wonderful article about Lent in The New York Times Magazine. To say the least, I was great-ly surprised to read a Lenten reflection in The New York Times! The article was written by Rachel Howard and in it she speaks of

her conversion to Christianity, being baptized in the Episcopal faith. In speaking about Lent, she says: “Lent provides space for your guilt. This is not about cultivating bad feel-ings but slowly disrobing them, letting them reveal their true nature.” Lent is actually a positive season, a season when we unflinchingly look at the destructive feelings and tendencies within us, rather than hide those feelings and tendencies, we confront them with gentleness and compassion, trusting in God’s transforming love and forgiveness. Depravation itself can be a gift.”

We are beginning the fourth week of Lent, we are literally right in the middle of the season. Most of us spend our year running away from unpleasant feeling, denying our guilt and weakness. It is the power of Christ who passed from the horror of death into new life which can transform the death within us into new and vibrant life!

MUSIC PROGRAM

Entrance Hymn: Amazing Grace

Kyrie

First Reading: Joshua 5:9A, 10-12 Responsorial Psalm: 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 Gospel: Luke 15:1-3, 11-32

Profession of Faith I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man,

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

BOSTON'S BASILICA OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP

LENT AT THE BASILICA

The Redemptorists welcome and invite you to join us throughout Lent as we are re-minded of the Paschal Mystery in Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection. During this season of preparation, Lent helps to deepen our faith by our individual and common

acts of prayer, fasting and sacrifice.

Lenten Regulations Abstinence -Catholics over 14 years of age are bound to the obligation of absti-nence. Abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday (March 6, 2019) and on all Fridays of Lent. On days of abstinence, meat may not be used at all.

Fast – Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash Wednesday (March 6, 2019) and Good Friday (April 19, 2019) meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed.

Regarding other weekdays of Lent, participation in daily Mass and the voluntary observance of fasting is recommended. Commendable, particularly during Lent, is generosity to local, national and world programs of sharing our abundance, the traditional Lenten Devotions and all the self-denial summed up in the Christian concept of “mortification.”

Stations of the Cross Fridays during Lent 7:00pm

Every Friday evening during Lent, we invite you to walk the Way of the Cross with our priests and parishioners in the Basilica for Stations of the Cross.

Lenten Day of Refection Saturday, March 30, 2019 9:00am - 5:00pm

Fr. Dabney will lead a parish day of reflection to focus on Lent as a season of heal-ing and hope in the Parish Center on Saturday, March 30th. Save the date and join as we come together as a community.

Lenten Fish Dinner Friday, April 12, 2019 5:00pm - 7:00pm

Our annual fish dinner will be held in the Parish Center. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children (12 and under). Advanced payment is required, no walks ins or payment at the door will be accomodated. Please purchase tickets at the Rectory Office by Monday, April 8th.

Reflection

“No longer was there manna for the Israelites, who that year ate of the yield of the land of Canaan.” (Joshua 5:12)

Over the forty years that the Israelites journeyed through the desert, God provided them with manna to eat. As soon as they were able to enjoy the fruits of the Promised Land the manna ceased. Likewise, God’s blessings to us may change over the years but it is important to trust that God will always provide us with all that we need.
