If you’d like more Olympic activities (this is OPTIONAL) head over to:

https://www.olympics.com.au/community-and-schools/educator-resources/

We are learning all about sportspeople and writing an informative profile

to give information about their career.

This week, you’ll be researching your favourite Sportsperson, they can

be from Australia or anywhere in the world – the choice is YOURS.

We will be researching the following information:

✓ Full name

✓ Sport they play in

✓ Where were the born?

✓ Height, age

✓ Sporting achievements

✓ Interesting facts

If you don’t have a favourite Sportsperson, you might want to pick

an Australian sportsperson from the list:

• Patty Mills: Basketball player

• Shane O’Neill: Skateboarder

• Ash Barty: Tennis player

• Cathy Freeman: retired Runner (Athletics)

• Ian Thorpe: retired Swimmer

• Shane Warne: retired Cricketer

• Cate Campbell: Swimmer

• Sally Fitzgibbons: Surfer

What am I doing in Writing for Week 4 and 5?

MONDAY and TUESDAY WEEK 5 - WRITING

We are learning to write

research information about a

Sportsperson.

You are going to pick a Sportsperson to

research about (don’t forget there’s a list

on the very first writing page if you are

unsure who to pick). Put all your ideas into a

brainstorm or in a layout that suits you. Dot

points are a nice, clear way of setting out

information. Use Kiddle search engine if you

like – it’s like Google for kids! This might

take you two days!

Here is the information you need to

research:

✓ Full name

✓ Sport they play in

✓ Where were the born?

✓ Height, age

✓ Sporting achievements

✓ Interesting facts

Teacher Example

Ash Barty

Ashleigh Barty Professional tennis

player – world no. 1

Sporting achievements

• twelve singles titles and eleven

doubles titles

• won 2019 French open

• won 2021 Wimbledon

Interesting Facts

• She used to play professional

cricket before tennis

• She’s right handed

• She’s Aboriginal

• She almost left tennis because

she wasn’t experiencing a

normal teenage life!

WEDNESDAY WEEK 5 - WRITING We are learning to turn our brainstorms into sentences!

Now it’s time to BUILD OUR SENTENCES! Make them interesting! Please don’t start your sentences off with the same word. Change it every second sentence to keep the reader engaged. You start your

sentences with a capital letter ALWAYS. Have a look at the words in red to see how the teacher has built their writing by adding

adjectives, conjunctions and important vocabulary. Make sure you cross off your ideas from your brainstorm so you don’t double up on

your information! Don’t forget to check your writing for SPELLING, PARAGRAPHS MAKES SENSE (GRAMMAR) and INTERESTING WORDS.

Teacher Example

Ashleigh Barty (Ash Barty) is an Australian professional tennis

player. She was born on 24th April, 1996 and is 25 years old. Ash

Barty was born and raised in Ipswich, Queensland. She is 1.66m

tall and is ranked number 1 in the world for tennis!

Her sporting achievements include, twelve single titles and

eleven doubles titles. Ash Barty won the 2019 French Open and

most recently the 2021 Wimbledon.

Some interesting facts about Ash Barty is, that she used to

play professional tennis, she’s right handed and she’s Aboriginal.

Ash Barty almost left tennis when she was younger because she

wasn’t experiencing a normal teenage life!

Ash Barty is one of Australia’s best athletes.

Subordinating conjunctions

helps us join two ideas

together to build our

sentences!

THURSDAY WEEK 5 - WRITING

We are learning to revise and edit our writing!

Editing and revising is SO important. As authors, we make mistakes all the time and our writing is never perfect the

first go and that is OKAY! Please do not rush editing and revising. Take your time!

There are some posters to help you! Try reading your writing to someone, they might hear mistakes that you

do not!

FRIDAY WEEK 5 - WRITING

We are learning to publish our writing!

Publishing is an excellent way to bring our writing together and make

it SHINE! Just like authors do! You can use any of the ideas below

OR on the next page is a Sports Star Fact File sheet you can use!

Publish your work however you like! You could do

any of the following

• Publish in your work book

• Publish on pretty paper

• Make a poster

• Type your writing on a word document

• Create a video reading your work

• Create a powerpoint

• Make an interactive project

Don’t forget to:

- use my neatest

handwriting or a clear font

- add my corrected errors

from editing and revising

- take pride in my work (Do

it nice or do it twice)

On the next page is a

fact file sheet you can

use for publishing if you

like!

Library – Week 5

Library Week 5

Watch the video of Mrs Marden reading the Shortlisted Text - Mathew Flinders – Adventures on Leaky Ships. Complete the following library activity.

In the text we learnt about Matthew Flinders who mapped the entire coast of Australia. We heard about adventure, storms and shipwrecks, death and danger of loyalty to

his crew, love for his wife, and affection for the brave little cat who sailed with him.

Your task after reading is to think about these three questions:

• What were the biggest hurdles Matthew Flinders faced on his journeys?

• What drove him to explore and discover new lands?

• What were his key achievements?

Watch the following clip of the illustrator for this text Prue Pittock whose book Matthew Flinders - Adventures on Leaky Ships, written by Carole Wilkinson and published by

Wild Dog Books, has been shortlisted for the 2021 Eve Pownall Award. In this video, Prue talks about how it felt to be shortlisted and shares some of her original

illustrations.
