AESTHETIC

Appearances can be deceptive. Gorillaz have filled arenas worldwide but self-infatuated cock-rocking divas they are not. This proposal employs no fireworks or spinning platforms, flying pigs, ’57 Chevy’s, pole-dance cubicles, jet streams of ‘hair air’ or showering post-encore glitter.

Instead, the proposed stage architecture leaves the expanse of the ground plane well alone for the benefit of the star attraction - musical spectacle. Room to breathe is a must for Gorillaz - with a core musical cast which numbers perhaps fifteen, their equipment, and then numerous guest performers arriving and departing throughout the show things can get a little squeezed. And then there’s all that monkeying around to be catered for…

Hence, the principle aesthetic decision has been one of loud restraint, the proposed set supplements the musical spectacle but remains peripheral and neither overpowers the human cast nor simply gets in their way.

The design methodology began with the fullest extent of the stage envelope, into which a spherical surface section was inserted, locating the haphazard population of camo background tiles (expanding on the original source image - Russell’s studio) and inferring a focal point into which all illumination and sonic energy is directed: Global co-ordinate 0,0,0 - Centre Stage.

The foreground studio equipment maintains this same focal point, and features old-skool cloth-covered speakers, subs, tweeters, RAT pedals and some chrome cage thingies for a bit of ‘luxe’. Imagine this lot plugged in, turned to 11 and pointed in the same direction. Gulp.

Together the architectural elements provide a suspended patchwork scene which will create a myriad of light and shadow shafts from surrounding lighting, is light-reflecting, light-absorbing, quick to assemble/ disassemble, capable of being partially re-arranged venue-to-venue and may be used as a background for the placement of any and every arrangement of stage adornments imaginable.
