Member’s Corner 5

Dear Member,

The Indian sugar production in the season 2016-17 is likely to be 20.3 MT which is a drop of 20 % from the previous year, due to severe drought in Maharashtra and Karna-taka that hit plantation. The Sugar Mills are set to end the season on a sweet note as the sugar prices are likely to remain firm in 2017. Most analysts forecast a return of surplus in India in the next season. A rebound in Asian output, a bigger crop in the EU and stable produc-tion in Brazil will ensure adequate availability of sugar in next season.

With the demand for sugar increas-ing with time, there is an excellent opportunity for the sugarcane grow-ers to produce more. Thus, innova-tive methods and cultural practices are the need of the hour. The emerging concept of Sugar-Power-Ethanol Complexes is a sure way of de-risking from sugar downturn. The industry needs to cash in on huge potential in terms of sugar and energy, taking into considera-tion, the global demand, challenges

intrinsic to the farming systems and concerns like climate change.

In the past two months, STAI suc-cessfully organized the following seminars on imperative topics :

1. All India seminar on “Bagasse Drying – A Success Story” held on 3rd February, 2017 at Meerut

2. All India seminar on “Emerging Trends in use of Stainless Steel to combat corrosion in sugar & allied industries” held on 4th March 2017 at Pune

Both the seminars received over-whelming response despite the on-going crushing season. Over 110 delegates attended each seminar.

I have also pleasure in informing that the 2nd revised edition of STAI’s annual publication “Year Book and Technical Data Directory of Indian Sugar Factories 2014-15 & 2015-16” was released during the Pune seminar. The Year Book contains working performance of 407 sugar factories across India.

The most awaited event, 75th Annual Convention & Sugar Expo 2017 will be held from 3-5 August 2017 at Hotel Le Meridien, Kochi, Kerala. Kochi is a penin-sula along the shores of tranquil Vembanad Lake and the Arabian Sea. The delegates will have the opportunity to visit some of the tourist places of interest.

I take this opportunity to invite you and your colleagues to attend the Convention and look forward to welcoming you to Kochi.

With regards, SANJAY AWASTHI

The Sugar Technologists’ Association of India in association with Enviropol Engineers Pvt. Ltd organized an All India seminar on “Bagasse Drying—A success story” on 3rd Feb, 2017 at Meerut, U.P. This was the first time that STAI organized a seminar in Meerut. The seminar received a splendid response and 110 delegates attended the same.

The dais was shared by the following :

1. Mr. Gyanedra Kumar, Advisor, Daurala Sugar Works : Chief Guest

2. Mr. Sanjay Awasthi: President STAI 3. Mr. SM Sharma: VP, STAI 4. Mr. DK Goel: Hon, Editor STAI.

The inaugural session began with welcome address by Mr. Sanjay Awasthi. He explained the need for co-generation in sugar factories and the relevance of bagasse drying for the same. He appreciated the efforts put in by Daurala Sugar Works & Enviropol in successful development of a bagasse dryer. Mr. Gyanedra Kumar explained how effectively & efficiently the bagasse dryers are being used at Daurala Sugar Works. His colleague Mr. Rakesh Jain gave details of the steps taken by

Daurala Sugar Works in collaboration with team Enviropol for the installation and improvement of the first bagasse dryer. Consequently, they went on to retrofit flash type bagasse dryers in 3 of the existing boiler units at Daurala.. The details of the increase in bagasse saving and thereby increased revenues were also shared with the delegates.

The inaugural session was followed by the technical session, chaired by Mr. DK Goel. Five eminent speakers gave presentations in the forenoon session followed by discussions.

Mr. Rajesh Verma described the various systems used in the past for drying of bagasse and concluded that Flash type Bagasse Dryer is the only successful technology. It is reliable and cost effective. These dryers also clean up the flue gas. Studies at Daurala show that these dryers reduce SPM level to less than 100 mg/nm3. This can be further reduced to less than 50 mg/nm3 by incorporating a Wet ESP.

Mr. Anup Kesarwani, Vice President, STAI gave vote of thanks to the

dignitaries, delegates and the sponsors - M/s Enviropol Engineers Private Ltd., Noida (UP)

In the afternoon, the delegates visited Daurala Sugar Works and got the opportunity to view onsite working of the Bagasse Dryers. They were pleased to see clear white smoke from the chimney.

Following 5 technical presentations were made during the seminar:

Dr. D. Swain, NSI, Kanpur: Bagasse Drying – The most efficient way for fuel saving in sugar industry

Rajesh Verma, Enviropol Engrs: Bagasse Drying – A success story

Narender Kumar,Enviropol Engrs: Introduction of Wet Electrostatic Precipitator

Rajesh Verma, Enviropol Engrs: Hybrid Model of Bagasse Drier

Rakeshh Kumar Jain/Tarun Agarwal, Daurala Sugar Works: Synopsis of operating experience on Bagasse Driers at Daurala.
