Dear Members, Greetings! It is pleasure to share with you the activities of the Association and developments that are tak- ing place in the global sugar industry through this edition of STAI e- Newsletter. In India, the current season 2017-18 will see record sugar production. The production estimates that were revised last month from 26.2 Mt to 29.5 Mt have now been updated to 31Mt as there is still plenty of sugar- cane left to be crushed by the two giant sugar producing states Maharashtra and U.P. The above figure of 31 Mt will be the highest ever annual sugar production so far in India. With nearly 4 Mt of sugar stock carried over from the last year, another 6 Mt of surplus produc- tion this year and expectation of a bumper crop next year, the ex -mill sugar prices have gone down to Rs. 2800-2900 per quintal against the production cost of Rs.3500-3600 per quin- tal. This has resulted in huge cane price arrears. This year the global sugar production is poised to reach 190 Mt which will be the highest ever. On one hand the anti sugar campaign on health con- cerns has slowed down the consump- tion growth and on the other side the record sugar production has brought sugar prices under pressure across the globe. For sustainability, The Sugar Tech- nologists’ Association of India has been strongly advocating the industry for use of B-heavy molasses or alter- nate feed stocks for production of ethanol in the country. The Indian Sugar Industry produces appropriate quality of sugar for different domestic and export market segments . In the past three months STAI has successfully organized three seminars on pertinent topics related to the growth and development of the sugar and allied industries. The seminars received overwhelming response from the members as large number of dele- gates participated in them despite the ongoing crushing season. I have also pleasure in sharing with you that STAI has recently published its yearly publication “Year Book and Technical Data Directory of Indian Sugar Factories” for the season 2016-17 which was formally released during the All India seminar held at Lucknow on 6 th of April 2018. The STAI’s flagship event - 76 th Annual Convention and Interna- tional Sugar Expo 2018 will be tak- ing place at the Brilliant Conven- tion Centre, Indore, Madhya Pra- desh from 20-22 August 2018. Dear Members, Greetings! It is pleasure to share with you the activities of the Association and developments that are tak-ing place in the global sugar industry through this edition of STAI e- Newsletter. In India, the current season 2017-18 will see record sugar production. The production estimates that were revised last month from 26.2 Mt to 29.5 Mt have now been updated to 31Mt as there is still plenty of sugar-cane left to be crushed by the two giant sugar producing states – Maharashtra and U.P. The above figure of 31 Mt will be the highest ever annual sugar production so far in India. With nearly 4 Mt of sugar stock carried over from the last year, another 6 Mt of surplus produc-tion this year and expectation of a bumper crop next year, the ex-mill sugar prices have gone down to Rs. 2800-2900 per quintal against the production cost of Rs.3500-3600 per quin-tal. This has resulted in huge cane price arrears.

This year the global sugar production is poised to reach 190 Mt which will be the highest ever. On one hand the anti sugar campaign on health con-cerns has slowed down the consump-tion growth and on the other side the record sugar production has brought sugar prices under pressure across the globe. For sustainability, The Sugar Tech-nologists’ Association of India has been strongly advocating the industry for use of B-heavy molasses or alter-nate feed stocks for production of ethanol in the country. The Indian Sugar Industry produces appropriate quality of sugar for different domestic and export market segments . In the past three months STAI has successfully organized three seminars on pertinent topics related to the growth and development of the sugar and allied industries. The seminars received overwhelming response from the members as large number of dele-gates participated in them despite the ongoing crushing season. I have also pleasure in sharing with you that STAI has recently published its yearly publication “Year Book and Technical Data Directory of Indian Sugar Factories” for the season 2016-17 which was formally released

during the All India seminar held at Lucknow on 6th of April 2018.

The STAI’s flagship event - 76th Annual Convention and Interna-tional Sugar Expo 2018 will be tak-ing place at the Brilliant Conven-tion Centre, Indore, Madhya Pra-desh from 20-22 August 2018.
