The Selangor government has told Second Education Minister Datuk Seri IdrisJusoh that he should also stake his job on solving other problems plaguing theeducation system, not just Malaysian students performance in internationaltests.

"Theseincludedpoortrainingandmanagementofteachers,repeatedpoliticalinterferenceincurriculum,aswellasallegedimproprietiesineducationrelatedprocurementandinstancesofprejudiceagainstminoritystudents.

"Itwouldbeevenmoreappropriateiftheministercouldpledgetoresolvetheselongstandingproblemsandalsobewillingtoputhisjobonthelineinresolvingthem,"hesaidtodayinastatement.

Idrisyesterdaysaidhewasconfidentthatstudentswouldperformbetterinthisyear'sPisaandTIMSSafterdismalperformanceswhichsawMalaysianeducationrankingsdropwhencomparedwithstudentsinotherpartsoftheregion.

"Ichallengeyou.IsaythatwhenthePisaandTIMSSresultscomeoutthisyear,wewilldobetter.Iamgivingthisguaranteeasaminister.

"IamputtingmyselfatstakebecauseIknowwearegoingtoperformbetter,"hesaidinParliament.

Idrisdeclinedtocommentwhenaskedwhathewoulddoifthe2015ProgrammeforInternationalStudentAssessment(Pisa)andTrendsinInternationalMathematicsandScienceStudy(TIMSS)resultsshowedadeclineinsteadofanimprovement.

NikNazmicommendedIdris'smovetoputhisjobonthelinetoguaranteebetterresultsinPisaandTIMSS.

"ToofewcabinetministersintheUmnoBarisanNasionalgovernmentarewillingtotakepersonalresponsibilityovertheirrespectiveportfolios.

"WeplantoholdIdristohispledgeandeagerlyawaitdetailsofhisplantoensurethatMalaysianstudentsdobetterinthePisaandTIMSS,"hesaidinastatementtoday.

NikNazmialsoremindedIdrisoftheanxietyfeltbyparents,educatorsandemployersthatwentbeyondthetwoglobalassessmenttests.

HesaidtheproblemsinMalaysia'seducationweremuchbiggerthanhowstudentsperformedinPisaandTIMSS,althoughthedeclineinperformancewasworrying.March24,2015.
