stallion Shamus Award (Snitzel)
will stand for an increased fee of
$19,800 (all fees inclusive of GST) in 2020.

enjoyed a nice run in third spot in the race before
peeling out around the bend for home to go out
after the leader Fasuba (Power).
Sheng Li Superstar burst to the front at the
200-metre mark and was chased by the hot
favorite Sacred Capital (O’Reilly) and Pearl Green

The economic toll of coronavirus has
seen the fees of many stallions in Australia cut back for the upcoming
breeding season, however Rosemont Stud principal Anthony Mithen
believes Shamus Award has earnt his 80 per cent increase.
“He certainly deserved a fee rise on the efforts of multiple Group
winners including his breakthrough Group 1 winner out of his first crop
in Mr Quickie who won the Queensland Derby and placed in the Makybe
Diva,” Mithen told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“He’s proven to be a really versatile stallion, getting horses that can
sprint with the Snitzel speed but have got the stamina of a Cox Plate, so I
think he’s going to be around for a while and I’m not sure he’ll be under
$20,000 for too much longer either.”
Mithen confirmed that Shamus Award will cover a high-class book of
mares in 2020 including Special Favour (General Nediym), the dam of Mr
Quickie, and Flying Dansino (Fusaichi Pegasus), who produced Flying Award.
Shamus Award will once again stand alongside Group 1-winning
Royal Ascot hero Starspangledbanner (Choisir), whose fee has been
slightly reduced to $19,800 in 2020, having been offered to breeders for a
fee of $22,000 last year.
The four-time elite level winner also had a terrific year, siring Prime Star,
who took out the $2 million Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m), as well as the
Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) winner Millisle, who was the subsequently
named Champion 2YO filly in Europe.

“He has the Millennium winner and
he’s got a very good two-year-old that we’re lucky enough to have bred
and still part own in Starosa in Brisbane who is quite high up in the JJ
Atkins betting at the moment,” Mithen continued.
“He’s also got the Champion 2YO Filly in Europe which hasn't been lost
on breeders down under. It's a shrinking world we live in and everyone knows
when the good horses pop up and Millisle looks like she’s exactly that.
Starspangledbanner, who is currently the leading stallion in Victoria
by stakes winners to runners at over 6.3 per cent, was found to be subfertile
in the early part of his stud career, but Mithen has assured breeders his
fertility is back up to normal with 62 foals on the ground last year from 98
coverings in 2018.
“It’s been another stellar year for a horse with limited numbers but
those numbers are certainly set to expand now that his fertility is back to
A grade,” Mithen said.
“He’s a normal stallion and breeders can have the confidence that
they’ll send their mare and they’ve got as good a chance (of getting in foal)
as sending a mare to any other stallion. That’s going to be the positive that
we really want breeders to be aware of this season.”
Meanwhile, Rosemont’s veteran stallion Starcraft (Soviet Star) will
stand for an unchanged fee of $8,800 in 2020 - a price Mithen believes is
extremely good value off the back of the Group 1 producer’s sale statistics
earlier this year.
“He’s a horse I just can’t believe, if you’ve got multiple mares, why
wouldn't you be sending one to Starcraft every year and just helping
yourself to making money,” Mithen said.
“He gets a great sales horse as evident by his sales statistics this year.
I smile when I say this and I’ve got to say it with a bit more of a serious
tone at times, but the greatest yearling sale ever held in the southern
hemisphere was Magic Millions this year in January, and the stallion that
provided the greatest return on investment in that whole sale was Starcraft
for three or more sold.

“He averaged $150,000 off a service
fee of $8,000, so on multiples it was the best return. Then he went to the
Classic sale and sold one to George Moore for $340,000.
“There’s a well-known Asian market that snaps anything up that
shows any modicum of ability at the trials or in a maiden. We’re happy to
support him because we know there’s a paycheck at the other end.
“There’s been consistency over the last few years with him now
trading into Asia, getting a good horse in Hong Kong every season and
getting good sales results.
“I expect him to be a busy boy even though he’s nearer retirement than
the start of his career. He’s still in a picture of health and working well.”
The Rosemont roster for 2020 is completed by the Medaglia d’Oro (El
Prado) half-brother to dual Group 1 winner Star Witness (Starcraft) in
Nostradamus, whose fee has been reduced to $5,500 in 2020.
“He’s only had a small number of runners so far so the jury is still out
on him,” Mithen said. “He’s a value option and an extremely well-bred son
of Medaglia d’Oro.
“It's the right recipe that could work and he could easily be the budget
stallion that blossoms and grows into money when his late crop steps out
and his two-year-olds turn three.”
The relocation of Victoria’s most popular sire Written Tycoon (Iglesia) to
the Hunter Valley this year, leaves a gap in the market for a local stallion and
Mithen can’t see any reason why it couldn’t be filled by one of his sires.
“It was a blow Written Tycoon leaving Victoria but maybe out of the
shadows step a few horses like Starspangledbanner, Shamus Award or
Starcraft.
“It’s a real chance, I mean Starspangledbanner is the leading Victorian
sire with stakes winners to runners and Shamus Award sits third. Two of
the top three stakes-producers in Victoria shows that we’re going places
with our stallion ranks at Rosemont.”

Grandview Stud reduce Whittington feeQueensland’s Grandview Stud have reduced the
service fee for their stallion Whittington (Tale
Of The Cat) to $5,500 (inc GST) from $6,600 (inc
GST) as the state’s breeders carefully review
the ongoing impact of the global pandemic.
Whittington is currently second on the state’s
second season sires premiership and third on
the three-year-old list, with only two crops to
race. He has 16 individual winners at a strike rate
of 34 per cent this season. Stradbroke Handicap
(Gr 1, 1400m) winner Under The Louvre
(Excellent Art), whose first crop are yearlings,
will stand for $4,400 (inc GST). “There has been
a tremendous run of winners by Whittington
this year reinforcing his second position in the
Queensland second season sire table and third
position in the Queensland three-year-old sire
table,” Grandview’s owner Michael Grieve said.
“For $5,500, he is exceptional value especially
for Queensland breeders to chase the lucrative
QTIS bonus prize-money in races.”
Goodwood for Wangoom winnerDanny O’Brien confirmed yesterday that Order
Of Command (Squamosa) will be given a
chance at Group 1 level in Saturday’s $400,000
The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville.
Order Of Command has won both starts this
campaign, taking out a 1200-metre open
handicap at Caulfield on April 11 prior to scoring
in the Wangoom Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at
Warrnambool last Wednesday. It provided his
eighth victory from 21 starts and a second win at
stakes level. Gytrash (Lope De Vega) is the current
$3.40 favourite for The Goodwood ahead of Santa
Ana Lane (Lope De Vega) and The Inevitable
(Dundeel), each at $5.50. Order Of Command is
currently a $13 chance.

Flemington trip to reinvigorate SunlightTony and Calvin McEvoy have resorted to
travel to reinvigorate Sunlight (Zoustar)
ahead of The Goodwood on Saturday.
The four-year-old mare has been working
at Flemington before she returns to the
McEvoy’s South Australian base ahead
of Saturday’s Group 1 race. Tony McEvoy
believed his mare had become complacent
in the country environment at Angaston and
needed a spark ahead of the Goodwood. The
co-trainer said he felt cheated by Sunlight’s
performance in the TAB Classic (Registered
as the Robert Sangster Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m)
on May 2 when she finished last. “I couldn’t
find anything wrong with her and I couldn’t
sit on my hands, so I had to make a change,”
McEvoy said. “She has always been stimulated
by travelling and I thought she might have
been getting a little complacent in the country
lifestyle. So I put her on the truck and sent her
back to Melbourne.”
Fighting Teo heads to Sunshine CoastToowoomba trainer Kevin Kemp is trying
something different with Fighting Teo
(Teofilo). He will be dropping back in distance
when running in the Wayne Wilson Memorial
Mile (Listed, 1600m) at the Sunshine Coast
on Friday. Kemp has been going through
the new winter program to draw up a new
campaign for Fighting Teo and his main target
will be the Tattersalls Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) at
Eagle Farm on June 13. Fighting Teo is one of
the biggest horses in training, standing close
to 18 hands. The gelding usually takes a few
runs to peak and he resumed in a 1400-metre
race at the Gold Coast last month, then
stepped up to 1800 metres at the same track
two weeks ago, finishing fourth. “He did what
you would expect at his second run back from
a spell. I was more than happy,” Kemp said.
“Going back to 1600 metres on Friday isn’t
ideal but there isn’t a lot of suitable lead ups.
He can go to the Chairman’s Handicap (Gr 2,
2600m) (May 30) on his way to the Tattersalls
Cup (June 13).
Kiwi import vindicating Costa’s judgementGold Coast trainer Michael Costa has been happy
with his Kiwi import Supergiant (Red Giant).
The three-year-old gelding was narrowly beaten
in his first start in Stakes company, finishing
second in the Doomben Guineas (Listed,
1615m) on Saturday. Supergiant was initially
prepared by Matamata trainer Jim Collett, with
Costa sourcing him out of a Cambridge trial
in September last year. The gelding will now
progress to the Gunsynd Classic (Gr 3, 1800m)
on May 23 at Eagle Farm before a tilt at the Rough
Habit Plate (Gr 3, 2200m) at the same track. “The
horse is still quite immature and learning his
racing craft,” Costa said. “His last two runs have
been super and I think if he can get over a little
bit of ground and still run home in the times he
is running home in, we don’t know where he is
going to end up, which is good.”

Hong Kong on the cards for GalenusHong Kong buyers are moving in to try and
purchase Tasmanian galloper Galenus (Magnus),
who made a bright start to racing on the mainland
at Cranbourne on Friday. Trainer Scott Burton
sent Galenus to race in the care of Patrick Payne
as Tasmanian racing was shut down last month.
Brunton told Tasracing that Galenus has been
on the radar of Hong Kong buyers for some time.
“Galenus is a very smart horse with a huge future
but the interest is so strong from Hong Kong that
he will more than likely end up there,” Brunton
said. “I have to do what’s best for the owners so
if the money is right the horse might not race
here (Australia) again.” Galenus is nominated
for a 1400-metre handicap for three-year-olds at
Saturday’s Flemington meeting.
Group 1 opportunity for NeindorfUp and coming South Australian apprentice
Lachlan Neindorf will have his first Group 1
ride when he partners Zoutori (Zoustar) in The
Goodwood on Saturday. The 18-year-old has
risen through the local ranks, currently sitting
third in the South Australian premiership with 77
winners this season. “I’m happy to be sitting third
on the premiership and riding winners,” Neindorf
told Racing.com. "I've been getting some great
opportunities and I'm grateful that I now have the
opportunity to ride for a successful Melbourne
stable in a Group 1." Neindorf, competing in his
first ever Adelaide Carnival, believes his riding
continues to improve. “I think my strength and
style have really improved in recent times. I try
to mirror myself on someone like Jye McNeil
and I think I'm sitting lower, more balanced and
developing my strength naturally and patiently."

British racing restart pushed backBritish racing will not be allowed to resume
this month after the government confirmed
professional sport, even behind closed doors,
will not be staged in England until June 1 at the
earliest. The government on Monday published a
50-page guidance document clarifying its three-
stage plan for the easing of lockdown measures.
Step two of its strategy, which will not be allowed
to take place before June 1, includes "permitting
cultural and sporting events to take place behind
closed doors for broadcast, while avoiding the
risk of large-scale social contact". The guidance
document states that reopening of venues, such
as racecourses, that attract large crowds, "may
only be fully possible significantly later depending
on the reduction in numbers of infections".

Sheng Li Superstar (Harbour Watch)
has elevated himself to the level of
Macau’s second highest rated horse
with a determined win in Friday
night’s Class 1 & 2 (1510m) on the sand.
Prepared nowadays by Stanley Chin and
ridden by Luis Corrales, Sheng Li Superstar
enjoyed a nice run in third spot in the race
before peeling out around the bend for home to
go out after the leader Fasuba (Power).
Sheng Li Superstar burst to the front at the
200-metre mark and was chased by the hot
favorite Sacred Capital (O’Reilly) and Pearl
Green (Fastnet Rock), before powering away to
win by almost two lengths.
The hard finishing bolter Simply
Impeccable (Street Cry) finished second with
Pearl Green close up in third. Favorite Sacred
Capital raced a bit one paced in the straight
under Peter Ho and wound up in fourth spot
beaten two and three quarters of a length.
Friday’s victory was win number eight in
Macau with a further five placings for the five-
year-old, who has only been out of a top three
spot on four occasions in the enclave, with now
close to HK$2.5 Million in earnings.
Sheng Li Superstar surprised many with
his head victory over Pearl Green in the Spring
Trophy (Listed, 1500m) on the turf when racing
returned after the Coronavirus break in March.
Most attributed that to the soft lead the gelding
got on the day, however with a slick speed in
Friday’s race coming from Fasuba and Mujaan
(Fastnet Rock), Corrales simply bided his time in
third spot and had plenty left for the run home.
After Friday night's victory, the handicapper
gave the gelding another four points that took
him to a mark of 123; just three points behind
Macau’s highest rated horse Sacred Capital
who is on 126.
Sheng Li Superstar has been a great buy
for Mr. Frank Wong, who purchased him on
the advice of his former trainer Tony Fung. The
gelding originally raced in Victoria as Westerly
Wind where he won a maiden race at Geelong
on the all weather track by six lengths when
prepared by Henry Dwyer.
Formerly raced by Qatar Bloodstock in
Victoria, the bay was a product of the 2016
Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale where
he was purchased for A$145,000 by David
Redvers Bloodstock.
Tuhao Choice (Jakkalberry) picked up a
well deserved victory on Friday night but not
before having a great tussle with Still So Cute
(Thewayyouare) to prevail by one length on the
wire in the Class 3 & 4 over 1600 metres.
The son of Jakkalberry (Storming Home)
had been close in two recent starts but on
each occasion had been the maker of his own
demise.

Two runs back the three year old ran a close
second to Chromium Alloy (Testa Rossa) at
1500 (turf) however was relegated back to third
spot for his runaround racing manners after an
objection by the third horse Fortune Paradise
(Animal Kingdom).
At his most recent start, he again spoiled
his chances by racing very greenly for a close
second to Fortune Paradise again over the 1500
metre trip.
On Friday the gelding was on his best
behavior and the win gave Luis Corrales the first
leg of a double for the night, and also trainer Sio
Cheong who scored later in the evening with
Kelvin’s Choice (Snitzel).
Kelvin’s Choice is another that recorded
a well deserved win on Friday night under
apprentice Eric Cheung in the Class 4 & 5 over
1050 metres.
It took 21 tries before the four year old son
of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) could salute,
however the gelding had been plagued by bad
draws and bad luck in many of his runs.
The gelding commenced his racing career
in New South Wales under the moniker of Horn
when prepared by Bjorn Baker. A Wellington
maiden win over 1100 metres and a Nowra
BM58 over1400 metres were his claims to fame
there before being sold onto Macau.
Victor Chan Chun Fai was another trainer
that picked up a double for the night with Pride
Sprint (Makfi) and Bring Me Power (Denman).
Pride Sprint, a New Zealand bred four year old,
was the first of Chan’s winners, doing plenty of
work from his gate (11) under Japanese rider
Massa Tanaka to win the Class 5 & 6 over 1350
metres.
As a two year old, Pride Sprint looked
destined for better things; the gelding won a
trial at Waikato in nice fashion defeating an
Exceed and Excel (Danehill) colt who was
subsequently name Aquila that has now won
twice in Hong Kong in Class 4 and Class 3 and is
currently rated at 70.
Things didn’t go as smoothly for Pride
Sprint who descended to a lowly rating of 17
before Friday's win. That said, the manner of
his win suggests he might have turned a corner
running faster time (1.23.3) then his stablemate
Bring Me Power who won the last race, the
Class 4 in 1.23.5.
Bring Me Power also shrugged off a tough
run from his outside gate (11) to loop the field
and run away with the Class 4 under Japanese
rider Shogo Nakano.
Bring Me Power bolted away to win by three
lengths over Garlic And Spicy (Lonhro), with
Ashkari (Dutch Art) in third.
Formerly racing in Australia as Chauvinist,
the gelding was a $140,000 purchase by
Champion Thoroughbreds at the 2017 NZB
Select Yearling Sale. Under the care of John
O’Shea, he won a 1500-metre maiden at
Hawkesbury from six runs in New South Wales.
The son of Denman (Lonhro) is another
high-priced galloper to end up in Macau, no
doubt at a bargain price, and the four year old
will pay his way here evidenced by his strong
win on Friday night.
