The Chinese zodiac is made up of a 12-year cycle, with Chinese animal signs used for dating the years. For festive seasons, such as the New Year, the Chinese lunar calendar is the determining factor and the recurring animal year cycle is Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat (or Sheep), Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
The Snake is the sixth sign in the Chinese zodiac and it symbolises wisdom, caution and romance. The stamps feature the calligraphic symbol for the Snake and its pictorial derivation.
The stamps show the development of the Chinese character for the Snake, shown fully in the $1.80c stamp, and the way it is derived from its pictorial representation, shown in the 60c stamp. Paper-cut motifs are used to pictorially represent the Snake in the 60c stamp.

The miniature sheet tells the story (in Chinese and English) of how Nüwa, the half-human, half-snake goddess, created animals and humans in seven days in order to alleviate her loneliness. There is a special purple foil overprinting on the stamps, minisheet and zodiac sheetlet.
The zodiac sheetlet is a continuing feature of Lunar New Year issues (fi rst introduced in 2002) and features paper cuts of each of the animals of the zodiac with the highlighted year in purple foil. The stamps, minisheet and zodiac sheetlet stamps were designed by Dani Poon, Tak Nai of Melbourne. This is the sixth stamp issue in the Lunar New Year cycle by the talented designer.

Surfi ng is such a cornerstone of Australian leisure that it is diffi cult to imagine a time at which it did not exist. At the dawn of the 20th century, surf bathing was prohibited during daylight hours, surfboards were unknown and the unpatrolled ocean was feared by most. A little over a century later, surfi ng is one of our most popular leisure pursuits, our champions are among the best in the world, and the fashion and culture of the sport are dominant not just along the coastline but also across the country.
For many, surfi ng has become shorthand for what it means to be Australian. It accommodates both our irreverent, laidback sensibility and our dynamic sporting prowess. In 2013, Surfi ng Australia, the governing body of the sport, celebrates 50 years of promoting surfi ng as quintessentially Australian and steering its professional recognition. Marking the anniversary of Surfi ng Australia, this stamp issue embraces surfi ng culture and history since its popularity surged in the 1950s.

The stamps have been designed to refl ect the ephemera produced through the years, which has supported and given shape to surf culture. Typography has been a large part of ephemera design, which is refl ected in the stamp designs. Through their imagery, typography and “look”, the stamps express an historical arc from the 1950s to the current day.

Did you know that around 12 million Australians, comprising 63 per cent of households own a pet and 38 per cent of these households have at least one dog? We are a nation of dog lovers and this issue will appeal to the owners of popular small dog breeds.
The Miniature Schnauzer originated as a farm dog in Germany in the 19th century. A cross between a standard Schnauzer and smaller breeds such as the Poodle and Affenpinscher, the breed comes in four colours: black, salt-and-pepper, black-and-silver, and white. Playful and spirited, yet friendly and intelligent, Miniature Schnauzers make excellent watchdogs.
The Miniature Dachshund is a hound dog, probably bred in Germany in the 18th century to hunt burrow-dwelling animals. Long-bodied, with big front paws designed for effi cient digging, dachshunds can be long, smooth or wire-haired

and come in a range of colours. They are loyal and obstinate and sometimes stand-offi sh with strangers.
The Pug originated as a lap dog in the royal courts of ancient China. The breed was imported to Europe in the 16th century, where it became a favourite with the House of Orange, and soon became popular throughout Europe. Queen Victoria owned many Pugs. These dogs tend to be quiet and docile and are good family pets.
Descended from British rough coast-type terriers brought to Australia in the 19th century, the Australian Terrier was fi rst recognised as a distinct breed in 1850. Coat colours are shades of blue or red. The breed standard describes the Australian Terrier as spirited and alert, “with the natural aggressiveness of a ratter and hedge hunter”.
Bred as a toy dog, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was popular among the nobility in 16th century England, where it was used as a “lap warmer” for ladies. It was said of King Charles II that “his Majesty was seldom seen without his little dogs” and the breed has since been identifi ed with this monarch. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are affectionate, playful and socialise well with children and other dogs.
