Stand Upto Bullying.

Scholarship for the Victims of Bullying.

Introduction:

● When one of your own is at risk, what do you do? You do everything you can to help remove that risk.

● Bullying affects more people than you know. Possibly your family. The way you find out could be when there is nothing more anyone can do to help.

● We need to stand up and support the victims and stop the bullies.● I am asking you to read this document and make a decision at the end of it.

Bullying Stats: Scary.

● Rates of bullying in New Zealand are very high compared to other countries● The percentage of Year 5 students reporting recurrent bullying was statistically significantly lower in 43

of the 50 countries in the study● Only in one country was statistically significantly more bullying reported● New Zealand has not been reducing bullying in primary schools. This negative pattern has been evident

since 1994● 31% of the New Zealand middle primary students surveyed said they experienced bullying "about

weekly"● Students who reported the most frequent bullying had significantly lower achievement in mathematics

and science● Bullying has negative effects on student identity and well-being

“For some families, this is a reality”

Bullying Stats: Scary.

According to research conducted by the Government of New Zealand, one in four students has been a victim of bullying in New Zealand. It is estimated that 200 million kids and youth across the globe are being bullied by their peers. The Center for Adolescent Health states that bullied children have three times more chances of showing depressive symptoms compared to those who are not. Their chances of having suicidal thoughts are eight times higher. British research has also found that girls who used to be bullied during their early school years will most likely remain victims while they are growing up.

“What a bullied kid

really thinks, or hopes

for...”

Bullying Stats: Scary.

● 94% of NZ teachers said bullying occurs at their school

● Around 45% of NZ teachers and staff said verbal & social/relational bullying was brought to their attention once a week, while 25% heard of physical bullying once a week

● 46% believe cyber bullying occurs mainly between the ages of 11-14

There are many initiatives underway, but none support the victim financially to get their life back together, they are focussed on stopping and managing bullying, there is little focus post bullying, but often there are many costs associated with the required change.
