New year, new curriculum: Back to school 2017

Welcome to all new students and their families! Joining our school this year are: Zane, Kyanna, Brodie, Mac, Dallas, Zack, Bridie, Ashton, Reaghan, Mackenzie & Adele! This year, all Victorian schools will roll out a range of new subjects equipping students with a range of new skills and supporting twenty-first-century learning environ-ments. Choosing movies and games - Four tips to help you choose a movie or video game for kids Movies and video games can be fun and entertaining. Only you can decide what is best for your child. We have put together some practical tips to help you make informed decisions about your family’s entertainment choices. 1. Check the age recommendation for the movie or vid-eo game. If it is higher than your child’s actual age, it may not be suitable. 2. Check the content – what does the advisory infor-mation state about the movie or game’s content? Does it contain strong language, violence or sexual refer-ences? Will you be comfortable exposing your child to this type of material?

3. Look up the Classification Board decision about the movie or game you are thinking of watching or playing. Access the public database here. 4. Read reviews to see what other parents, experts and users are saying about a particular movie or video game. Reviews often contain summaries of storylines and game content including warnings about inappropriate material. We have collected some advisory and review websites that you may find useful. For example, the Raising Children and Common Sense Me-dia websites have practical information for parents about a range of age appropriate multi-media products for children.

Supervision & Personal Belongings

Reminder to families that students should arrive from 8.45 am. This is the time supervision begins. Please make sure all personal belongings are clearly named. Identifying ownership of hats, drink bottles, Ventolin spacers, clothing, bags etc, is much easier for students if their name is clearly visible on the item.

Scholastic Bookclub Due 16th February

Please ensure that you are registered for LOOP, to order anything from the catalogue. There will be no money handled at the school. Orders will be finalised after school on the due date. Orders need to be picked up by parents in the staffroom and you will be notified via the newsletter or text message when the orders have arrived. If you have any queries, please see Sharon.

Would like to extend an invitation to new parents to come along to

meetings or be involved in fundraising for our school.

From the Business Manager

Just a friendly reminder to all our families for the timely return of your permission notes, forms, and messages for non-attendance. As I will be available at the school office on Tuesdays and Thursdays, this will streamline processes.

For any queries, please contact the school on 5857 2514.

Please return all forms & permissions that have gone home in your family pack, as soon as possible.

Swimming

Our annual swimming program begins on 13th February. This is a whole school activity and teachers and students will walk to and from the pool each afternoon. Families may collect their children from the pool, but must ensure that teachers are informed. Students will not be allowed to stay at the pool without their parent being there or a written note giving permission for students to stay in the care of another family. Students will not be allowed to stay at the pool on their own. It will be essential that students are able to dress and undress themselves into and out of their swimwear without assistance.

Student accident insurance, ambulance cover arrangements and private property brought to school

Families should be aware that the Department does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Any private property brought to school by students is not insured by the school, or covered by school insurance, and that it is not the responsibility of the Department if that property is lost, stolen or damaged. This is a timely reminder that if any-thing is too precious to lose, get broken, stolen, mislaid or otherwise damaged, then don’t bring it to school. Many items that don’t have great monetary value, are very precious to their owner and should be left at home. The school will not be responsible for loss or damage of items brought to school that are not specifically requested to be brought to school as part of the learning program. Bourke Street Mall incident: Supporting school

communities

Recently, you will have seen coverage of the tragedy that occurred in the Bourke Street Mall. The incident may have affected students and families, and support is available. Contact the Principal if you would like to know what support is available. These links provide some support for how families might support their children if they are affected in any way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcbsAURXVBI&feature=youtu.be http://emergency.vic.gov.au/relief/#support%

School Council Elections 2017

Our first school council meeting for 2017 will be held on Wednesday 15th February at 7.00pm Effective school councils are a key factor in good governance. Effective councils have a wide range of skills, expertise and knowledge about how to improve school governance to provide the best possible educational outcomes for students. The annual school council election process provides an opportunity to attract members keen to add value and bring their expertise and skills to assist the governance of the school. If you are interested in becoming part of our School Council, have a talk to our School Council President, Mary Hipwell or myself, to find out what is involved.
