Workshop A – “Productive Talk in Science”

Workshop D - Science and Engineering Practices

This workshop will focus on the Science and Engineering Practices outlined in the K-12 Science Framework. Participants will identify the practices using hands-on activities. Discussion will center on the components ofthe practices and the guiding principles included in the Next Generation Science Standards. Educatorsunfamiliar with the eight practices would benefit the most from participation in this workshop.

Workshop E - “STEM Physics labs”

Instead of using the normal Regents Physics lab why not turn them into a STEM Physics lab? I will bring afew examples of different labs for participants to play with. Feel free to bring your own to share with the group.This will be a hands-on workshop.

In April, three Fairport High School students will fly an experiment of their own creation on NASA's ReducedGravity plane. Come hear from the students and their teachers about what they are doing and how you too canconnect your classroom with NASA. There is no better K-12 STEM partner to have if you want to excite yourstudents!

Workshop H - ”VEX Robotics 101”Learn how to incorporate a robotics program in your school as a club or within your curriculum. Test youroperating skills with a few robotic challenges using the VEX IQ and VEX robot. You will also see the RobotVirtual World program which allows students to design, program, and build robots virtually.

Ready or Not, Here They Come – The New National Standards and TheirImplication for Scientific Argumentation

The Common Core State Standards (2010), A Framework for K-12 Science Education (2012), and the NextGeneration Science Standards (2013) provide clear-cut indications to what’s ahead for classroom teachers,curriculum specialists, and professional development providers in science. A key component of all threedocuments is the incorporation of argumentation into the science curriculum. However, if you ask any numberof practicing science teachers if they can describe the essential features of scientific argumentation, or if theyhave their students write arguments from inquiry investigations, most answer a resounding "no." To preparescience educators for implementing argumentation in their classrooms, the session will focus on followingquestions:

1. What is scientific argumentation?2. What do the Common Core, the Framework, and the Next Generation Science Standards say about

scientific argumentation?3. What is the role of argumentation in science instruction?4. How does scientific argumentation support language arts literacy?5. How can students learn to make and defend arguments in science?6. How can inquiry-based labs be modified to accommodate students constructing and justifying

arguments?Douglas Llewellyn teaches science education courses at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY. Previously,he was the K-12 Director of Science at the Rochester City School District, a junior high school principal, and amiddle school science teacher. His interests are in the areas of scientific inquiry and argumentation,constructivist teaching, and science leadership. Doug is a frequent speaker at state and national conferences oninquiry- and argument-based teaching.
