Notwo exploration team missions are alike - most involve travel tonewly-discovered worlds and the search for any indige-nous signs ofcivilization - past orpresent. Exploration teams also take partin fi rst contact missions, escort di plo-matic and engineering teams tocritical missionlocales, and assist Marine combat unitsduringbattle. They also participateduring many other military missions, as their skill sets and experience warrant. Because of the flexible natureof an exploration team's assignments.its members must bewell -rounded and well trained in a numberof different fields. Most have military backgrounds, whileahandful are civilian personnel who serveascultural orlinguisticexperts.Fewexploration teams have any in-depth technical knowledge and can take care of themselves duringhostile encounters. Unofficially (due to the order inwhich the teams were formed when the SGC was chartered),the lower an explo. ration team's SG number, the more prestigious the assign ment.Competition toservewithanexploration unitis fierce, andonlythefinest.mostprovenpersonnel are placed on these multi-functional teams. Currently.the SGC employs seven exploration teams, with more undoubtedly on the way. Teams: SG-t.SG - ~ . SG-4. SGlO. SG-14,SG-J5. SG-17. MARINECOMBATUNIT When conflict looms, Marine combat units are always in thethick of things. SpeCializing inalltypes of warfare across a variety of different theaters, the Marine combat unitisthemostdangerous and well trained unitinthe sec's arsenal. Unlike other teams, the Marine combat unit has very specific requirementsand only the mOST qualified personnel are accepted into its ranks. Marinecombatunits often find themselves on the front line of an assault againstthe Goa'uld, defending a Stargate from aggressors. or dug in alongside Tok'raagents to repel enemy Jaffa. Any mission thatis expected to encounterhos tile forces merits the inclusion of a Marinecombat unit. [nmost cases, the Marine Combatunit lends itself to a support role, suchassecuring aStargate or protectinga scientific team. [nsome cases, Theunit may actually gain operational control, coordin~ting its efforts with other SG teams duringan assault or rescue operation. Asthe name suggests. all Marinecombat units are com prised of U.S.Marines. Each team consists of sixcombat ready personnel. Of the SGC's three Marine combat units, one is always on standbyalert for immediateuse. Teams: SG3. SGS, SG'18 SuggestedPersonnel(6):Teamcommander,intelli gence officer. heavyweapons expert X2.mission specialist X~ (sniper. demolitions. weapons expert). Member Requirements:U.S.Marines andmarksman and jumpcertification,as well as certificationwith all stan-dard SGC weapons. MEOICALUNIT The struggle against Goa'uld necessitated the creation ofaunit specializedindelivering medical care toteams beyond the Stargate. Each medical team consists ofcom baHrainedpersonnel capable of administering both long and short-term aid to injured personnel on the battlefield. A medicalteamalsoengagesinhumanitarianmissions, deploying foodand medical supplies to off-world cultures and peoples. Assuch. medical personnel must beprepared todeal with avariety of emergencies. sometimes without the benefit ofmodern supplies. Likewise. amedical team mustbeready tocounter unknown bacterial andviral agents never seen on Earth. [nmostcases, amedicalunit enters acombatzone accompaniedby one or more otherSG units. Wheneverpos-sible, amedical team returnsthose with severe injuries to the sec infirmaryfor treatment. Those seeking an assignment to amedical team must possess a great deal of empathy. as wellas the ability to dis tance their work from their personal feelings.Medical per sonnelarefrequently calledupon totreat alienspecies whoseinterests runcounter toour own, including the Goa'uld. Such emergencies do not allowfo r one's personal beliefs to interfere with the mission at hand. TheSGCcurrentlyemploystwomedical teams, with one team always on standbyfor use in the event of an emer gency. Teams: SGS, SGn. Suggested Personnel (4): Team commanderlheadphysi cianotriage expert. medical specialist X2. TOEARTIi After the completion of a mission and at the appointed time. the SG team returnstoIhe Stargateto dial Earth. In the event that the team has not had an opportunityto com-plete their mission it is within the purviewof the team com-manderto extend the mission. In such instances the team commandershould make reasonableefforts to dial the gate and contact the SGC. advising them of the delay and their new arrival time. Inmost exploration missions, however, the mission is easilycompletedintheappointed timeandtheteam returnsto Earth.Personnel must inventoryand returnwith allequipment they took withthem onassignment unless authorizedby their team commanderto leave it behind. As strangeas it may sound, t.his includes any trashand other discarded materials soas not to leave any signs of SG team activity. On most worldslhe Stargateis a central structurealong a majorthoroughfareor wellknown to local inhabitants(if any).Assuch.returning tothe Stargate maysometimes prove difficult if the gate is underguard. Dependingon the circumstancesathand a distraction may becalled for to allow access to the gate. DIAlIr-J~ TI-IESTARGATE Asoutlined earlier Inthischapter, thedialing ofa Stargateisa simple process but also somewhattime con suming. Provided the Stargateis not active and the DHDis functional, dialing of the gate can take as little as 35sec-onds.Thistime canbeshortenedifthe operator isinti-mately familiar with the glyph placement on the DHD and the destinationaddress, usually as short as useconds. 63 USEOFFORCE The sec has always been reluctantto authorizethe useofforce.but leavessuchactions inthe hands of their team commanders. While the use offorceona mission is regrettable.sometimes it be-comes necessary in orderto safeguard the livesof SGpersonnel. proper-ty,or innocents. Inthe event that deadly force is used. allSGteam members must giveafullaccounting of their actions after the mission and are interviewed in debriefingto determineif the use of force was justified. Innearly allcases team members exhausted allother options available to them prior to using deadly force. Alsoupon returningto base from an off-world mis-sion. the SGCinventories allequipment. including the numberof spent rounds. Inthe event of any discrepan ciesthe SGteammembers mustsubmit areport to account for the variances. The unauthorizeduse of force by an SGteam memo ber when deemed unnecessaryby the team commander can result inrelieving a team memberfrom active duty until an investigation can take place. If the member is found tohave exceeded his authority, hemay face for-mal charges up to and including a court martialand dis-mal from the SGC Civilians can face similar charges. Typically, one se team memberdials the addresswhile the other team members cover theunit. taking flanking positions to eitherside. Itis the responsibilityof the team member that dialed the gate addresstobepreparedwith the GDO to enterthe correct iris code. Once the team memo ber givesthesignaltheteamisthenfreetoenter the Stargate backto Earth. RETURr-J OFPERSOr-JNEl Inthe event that additional nonSGC personnel accom panya team back toEarth, the learn must notify the SGC viaradio communications that such personnel are in tran-sit. If unable to do so. then an SGteam member should be the first throughthe 5targateand provide verbal and visu alindication that the personnel immediately behind him are infact authorized. In the event of a security breach the armed response units in the embarkation room are author ized to shoot any nonSGC personnel onSight. Should the team relurnthroughthe Stargateunderfire, the rapid deployment of the iris may berequired. Insuch casesthe SGteam cangiveorders from the floor ofthe embarkation room to close the iris although the final deci-sion rests in the hands of the Base Commander(if present) or DutyOfficer.Inmostcasesthesepersonnel defer to relUming SG team members. Once Ihe iris isdeployed. the personnel reeovered, and the Stargateshut down, armed response units stand down. MI5510PliDEBRIEFI~CiDepending onthenature ofthe missiona debriefing takes placeimmediately, or after the SGteam has had a chance tobe checked out inthe base's infirmary. Ineither event the se team must exittothe armory toreturn all remainingordnance. BRIEFHI STORY Some members ofthenative amphibious species -Ohnes - visited Earth during Goa'uld occupation, and are thus previously familiarwithhumans. Oneofthem -Omoroca. who becamethe basis of a mythic Babylonian goddess- tr ied tointerfere inthe System Lords' enslave ment ofhumans. The Goa'uld killedher, but her fate was not reportedback to her peoplefor thousandsof years. The SGC uncoveredher fate and passedon word to her mate. Their eyes are pale, almost colorless.ilndadaptedforsee ingunderwater:their facialstructure issimilar toolher aquatic species.with spinesat the eilrs, and fi nlike extru sions on the face. They swim and walk under water easily, manipulating their buoyancy formaximum effectiveness. Some ofthem apparently mate forlife.and formattach mentsvery simi lar to humans. At this time, they are in the processof establishinga new colony on(Inunnamedplanet somewhereina more isolated portion ofthe galaxy. They have statedthat after the majority oftheir population reachesthis new world, they willbury their Stargatein an attemptto avoid allfur-ther contact withthe Goa'uld. However, untilthen.the remaining Real avoidcontact withoutsidersand tryto make their way to their new planet, using wh(lt.ever means areavailableto them. HISTORY Recordedhistory for the Real startsat the time of their firstencounterwith an unknown offworld species- possi bly Goa'uld subjects- who camethrough the Stargateon a scouting/tradi ng party. Atthe time, the Realpopulation consistedof looselyorganizedtribes.withno domesticated animals, noconstructedlandvehictes. and aside from canoes andsmallboats, notransportation options. Occasionally. individuals would go on "quests"to meet up with other tribes and passalong stories,or a rare outlaw Realwouldbebanished (USUil]lyforviolatinghunting taboosand familylaws). The tribes who lived within walk ing distanceof the Stargateknew that itwas an anomalyon the landscape, and not a natural formation: but lacking any technological explanation for it.they relegat edittothe statusof myt h and mystery. When the first alien speciescamethroughthe Stargate, it took sometime for the nativesto either realize what had happened,or to feel the effects of the interlopers'presence. Originally, the scouting/tradingparty who came through were i nterestedin the natural resourcesof the planet. but after observingsomeof the local fauna, and their limited but stilleffective "stealth" abilities. word got out that the planethad unusualextra resources.More visitors came to study t helocalbiology, andeventually, thenativeReol becameawareof outsidersin their midst. Insteadof directly confronting the alien visitors. they adoptedtheir usual strategy:observation, escalatingsur veillance. and finallyinfiltration. They learned that their ability to blend inwitha crowd was highly prized. as were the chameleon capabilities ofthe localanimals.Highly alarmed, they steppedup their surveillanceas well as pass ingthenews ofthisnew threat tosurroundingtribes. Information traveled slowly, but within a year, mostof the inhabitantsof the homeworldknew that visitors from OUT-side of their worldexisted, and that they weren'tfriendl y. Tribes ofReolactively avoided contact withthe visitors now. and rook measuresto thwart their attemptsto study the local wi ldlife. Thenext development involvedinTimidation tactics; infiltrati ng their C'lmps. committing actsof sabotage, and generallymaking their stayon the planet as unpleasantas possible.Amazing as it seems.the Real effons constituted asuccessful guerrillawardespite theirlackof central authority. Theiradvanced infiltrationabilitiesandthe 107 continuedefforts of offworld visitors to studyand capture them rather thankillthem bothaided themintheir struggle. Withinthe next decade, however, the Goa'uld became awareof the Reols' existence, which was the beginning of the end of li fe on their native planet. 1N VASION Rahimself ordered the originalinvasion ofthe Real homeworld,in an effort to keep the news of the Reols' abil ities a secretfrom the otherSystemLords. The initial expe dition force was of a limited size, and implementedthrough the Stargate, rather than by ship. Approximately one thou sandJaffa were sentto captureandsubdueany membersof the native population they could find. The Reolwatched them from the momentthey steppedthrough the Stargate, Followingtheir movements, memorizing their activities. and infiltratingtheir ranks. Moreinformation was gath-ered and passedback to the tribes within days of the Jaffa invasion. It.becameimmediatelyapparentthat capturewas to be avoided at all costs.and that the removal of the Jaffa from the planetwould be highly desirable. Withinthe week, the natives instigated running skir m ishesinvolving sabotagedsupplies, diverted water cours-es, landslides, and otherlong-distanceattacks,evenas Real infiltrators misled the Jaffa at every turn. The f irst invasion was an unmitigat ed disaster, and the Jaffa returnedtoRa empty-handedwith only one-third of the troopswith which they'd left, despitesuperior weaponryand organizat ion, Bythis time, t he Reol had assimilated enoughknowl-edgeof the Stargatesto realize that this artifact was their best chanceof escapingany further attacks. However, ~nimmediateevacuationwas not suggested, becausethey did not yelunderstandthe sheerscope of the Goa'uld influ-ence.The tribal leaderscalled for a concordance{gathering) forallt he tribes. an unprecedentedmeasure. There, they shared knowledge of the Stargate'sworkings. along with discussionsof how to handlefurther attacks, should they come fromotherspecies. They decidedthat inthe eventof an attack, the Real would escapeto a nearby uninhabited world, and set up new campsa I1dI ives there. Unfortunately, Ra'sforces returned withreinforce-ments via Goa'uld motherships. The laffa instigateda sys-tematic se~rch.and - destroy mission, and the Stargatewas guardedon a round-theclockbasis. The first chanceof Reol escapewas blocked, and it became necessaryto formulate new plans. RESISTANCE laffaforcesbegan attacking camps and settlements across theplanet.takingprisoners wherever possible. Within days, Ra's army had a growing fifthcolumn of Reol impersonatorsintermingledwithin his troops.Someset up an underground.transporting"caprured"Real through the Stargateto otherdestinations.
