Per dare il via alle riflessioni, alle ricerche e ai

progetti degli studenti, è stato dato quest’anno il

tema STAr+DuST.

Un tema che non vuole essere legato ad una

iconografia precisa, ma lasciare al contrario largo

spazio all’interpetazione.

Stelle, polvere, sistemi complessi e illimitati da

cui ciascuno ha tratto la propria chiave di lettura

e ha trovato la sua stella o il suo meteorite, a

cui ha applicato un’estetica personale, una scelta

di materiali.

Il linguaggio che ne emerge risulta quindi natu-

ralmente variegato, non riconducibile a un unico

stile, ma specchio autentico della complessità

attuale e della personalità di ogni studente.

STAr/DuST was the theme devised this year

to stimulate reflections, research and to inspire

student projects.

A theme which was not intended to be closely

related to a precise iconography, but which

leaves ample space for interpretation.

Stars, dust, complex and unlimited systems

interpreted in a personal way by each individual,

defining their own star or meteorite, to which

personal aesthetics - choices of materials,

reference scenarios for shooting, or narratives of

fashion - were applied.

The emerging language is therefore naturally

variegated, without being attributable to a single

style, and a true reflection of current complexities

and the personalities of each student.

B A G SG A B SQuando la sartorialità e l’expertise di un brand di borse come Gabs Franco Gabbrielli si unisce alla creatività artistica e sperimentale dei giovani studenti di NABA - Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano anche una semplice idea può diventare qualcosa di più. In questo caso il progetto si chiama MARCO POLO: esplorazioni immaginarie e viaggi impossibili ed è nato nell’otti-ca di favorire l’integrazione tra l’azienda e gli studenti dell’accademia per promuovere la realizzazione di un concept di borse sul tema del viaggio lavorando su nuove stampe e sull’iconico modello G3 di Gabs. Alessandro Manzi, Project Leader, ha guidato gli stu-denti all’esplorazione di quattro temi: L’AVENIR DE L’ENFANCE Viaggio nel Futuro, HISTORIA Viaggio nella

Conoscenza, MEMPHIS KITE Viaggio intorno al globo e RED LACQUEREL LIGHT Flash Back, tutti volti a esplora-zioni immaginarie e viaggi impossibili. E il risultato: trentotto inedite stampe raccontano storie, tempi e luoghi attraverso trentotto inedite borse, quat-tro delle quali entreranno in produzione.

When the art of tailoring and the expertise of a brand of bags such as Gabs Franco Gabbrielli joins forces with the artistic and experimental creativity of young students from NABA - Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano, even a simple idea can evolve into something more. In this case, the project is called MARCO POLO: imaginary explorations and impossible travel, created

with a view to promoting integration between the company and students from the academy, in order to promote the creation of a bag concept linked to the theme of the travel, working on new prints and on the iconic G3 model by Gabs.Alessandro Manzi, Project Leader, guided students to explore four themes: L’AVENIR DE L’ENFANCE A Journey into the Future, HISTORIA A Journey into Consciousness, MEMPHIS KITE A trip around the globe and RED LACQUEREL LIGHT Flash Back, all directed at imaginary explorations and impossible travel.And the results: thirty unparalleled prints portraying stories, times and places through thirty unique bags, four of which will go into production.

“STArDuST”, o “POLVErE DI STELLE”

La prima associazione che mi fa venire in men-te la parola “Stardust” è una scena del musical “Ziegfeld Girl” del 1941, uno dei più sfarzosi di Hollywood, con la scenografia a scale che salgono verso il cielo, e le più belle star del cinema americano, Hedy Lamarr, Lana Turner e Judy Garland nei loro costumi in tulle e chiffon, chiari e leggeri come nuvole, cosparse di stel-le scintillanti. Il brano musicale della scena era “You stepped Out of a Dream ”, “Sei uscita da un sogno”. Ecco, le bellezze ricoperte di stelle come creature fantastiche sono apparse come in un sogno, scintillanti di gioia e felicità, mentre il mondo sprofondava nel buio sotto le bombe della II Guerra mondiale.È stato un sogno di bellezza e felicità anche per Valentino Garavani. In un’intervista il grande cou-turier parlava dello stesso film “Ziegfeld Girl”: “Per me, un ragazzo tredicenne, vedere tale bel-lezza – penso che da quel momento io decisi che volevo creare abiti per le donne ”.E che donne! Valentino vestiva le vere star, don-ne di grande personalità che lui sapeva rendere quanto più belle, mentre detestava la volgarità delle “starlette”, che scompaiono rapidamente nel buio dell’oblio. I suoi abiti erano sempre do-nanti, femminili, che facevano sognare.

Le immagini delle stelle rappresentano metafo-ricamente ciò che sta al di sopra del terreno, del consueto, un sogno, un desiderio, lontano dalla mera esistenza materiale:

“Forse s’avess’io l’ale/ da volar su le nubi,/ e noverar le stelle ad una ad una…” Sono i versi di Giacomo Leopardi, a esprimere il fascino delle stelle.

Le stelle sono le guide dei temerari navigato-ri ed esploratori che si avventurano negli spazi sconosciuti:

“…e la notte bagnata ci toglie la visione del cielo, …”“Siamo deviati dalla rotta, erriamo sulle cieche onde. … Così per tre giorninel cieco chiarore siamo persi per il mare, le notti sono senza stelle.”

(Virgilio, Eneide, III, vv. 192-208)

Non potere vedere le stelle-guida metaforica-mente può significare perdersi, smarrire se stes-si, non riuscire a realizzare un progetto di vita. È per questo che dai tempi dei sumeri l’umanità scruta i cieli per divinare il proprio destino attra-verso lo studio dei movimenti degli astri. Gli eventi storici più importanti vengono associa-ti a stelle e comete: quella della nascita di Gesù intesa come annuncio di una nuova era, il primo volo nello spazio stellare nel 1961 segna l’inizio di una svolta radicale nella società, nella tecno-logia, e anche nella moda, che diventa “spaziale ”e moderna, e da allora ad oggi ispira il nostro modo di vestire. Ma le stelle, così come talvolta i sogni, possono anche ingannare: le scie delle comete, polveri delle stelle, viste dalla terra, ci appaiono come miriadi di minerali scintillanti, mentre in realtà non sono che acqua ghiacciata! Ma, purché luc-cichino, che siano diamanti, o cristalli Swarovski, fanno subito festa e allegria!

“STArDuST”

The first association that reminds me of the word “Stardust” is a scene from the 1941 musical “Ziegfeld Girl”, one of Hollywood’s most glitzy musicals, with set stairs leading up towards the sky and the most beautiful stars from American cinema, Hedy Lamarr, Lana Turner and Judy Garland in clear and light cloud-like costumes made from tulle and chiffon, sprinkled with twinkling stars. The song played during the scene is “You stepped Out of a Dream”. These stunning women covered in stars and resembling imaginary creatures appeared as in a dream, sparkling with joy and happiness, while the world plunged into the darkness of the Second World War bombings. This was also a dream of beauty and happiness for Valentino Garavani. During an interview, the great couturier spoke of the same film “Ziegfeld Girl”: “For me, a boy of thirteen, seeing such beauty - I think that from that moment I decided that I wanted to create clothes for women”.And what women! Valentino dressed the real stars, women with great personality that he knew how to make even more beautiful, while he detested the vulgarity of “starlets”, who quickly disappeared into the darkness of the oblivion. His garments were always flattering, feminine, to dream of.

Images of stars metaphorically represent what lies above the ground, the usual, a dream, a desire, far from mere material existence: “Perhaps, if I had wings / to fly to the clouds / and number the stars one by one…” are the verses of Giacomo Leopardi voicing the charm of the stars.

Stars are the guides of daring navigators and explorers venturing into unknown spaces: “...and the wet night takes the vision of heaven away from us,…”“We have deviated from the route, wandering on blind waves. ...Thus for three days,we have been lost at sea in the blind glimmer, the nights are without stars.”

Being unable to see the guiding stars can metaphorically imply getting lost, losing oneself, being unable to achieve a project in life. It is for this reason that mankind has looked to the heavens since Sumerian times to foretell man’s destiny by studying of the movements of the stars. The most important historical events are associated with stars and comets: that of the birth of Jesus intended as the announcement of a new era, the first mission into outer space in 1961 marking the beginning of a radical change in society, technology, and also in fashion, becoming “spatial ” and modern, inspiring our way of dressing since then until now.

But stars, just like dreams at times, can also deceive: comet trails, star dust, seen from the Earth, appear to us as myriads of glittering minerals, while being in actual fact nothing more than frozen water! But, whether diamonds or Swarovski crystals, when they shine, they immediately evoke celebrations and merriment!

Stardust, Moda e Fotografia.

Stardust è maschile.

Quando il genere maschile avrà trovato la forza

per scavare finchè non ritrovi le parti mancanti

del suo genere, rimane pulviscolo incompiuto.

Moda riguarda la capacità degli indumenti di

nascondere la persona rivelandone solo un

altro-da-sé.

La Fotografia di Moda serve per fissare il folle

pensiero maschile rivolto all’idea di femminile.

La preda donna è posta a suo servizio.

Così è nella stampa che riporta i trend del mo-

mento. Così è finchè le donne si mantengono

nel silenzio. Ma così non è nelle pubblicazioni

che hanno rispetto per questa disciplina. Portano

un punto di vista rispettoso, dignitoso e davvero

innovativo, moderno, in linea con la difficile ri-

cerca di autenticità.

Ma queste pubblicazioni non vengono ideate

in Italia.

Stardust, Fashion and Photography.

Stardust is masculine.

By the time the male genus has found the

strength to dig until it finds the missing parts of

its genus, fine unfinished dust will be left.

Fashion relates to the ability of garments to hide

the person, revealing only another self.

Fashion photography is used to secure the

absurd male perception of women. Female prey

placed at his service.

As portrayed in prints exhibiting current trends.

As portrayed, as long as women remain in

silence. But not in the publications respecting

this discipline. These manifest a point of view

that is respectful, dignified and extremely

innovative, modern, in line with the arduous

search for authenticity.

But these publications are not designed in Italy.

Les métamorphoses du vide

Max Mara nato nel 1951 cresce e si sviluppa

nell’arco di 60 anni.

Caratterizzato da semplicità e classicità, ricerca e

qualità dei materiali è oggi un marchio diffuso a

livello internazionale, con punti vendita in tutto

il mondo.

Federica Magnani, brand manager, sottolinea la

volontà di Max Mara di investire su giovani che

ragionino green field e a 360°, perché Max Mara

è un azienda che ha bisogno di concretezza, che

mira a posizionare sul mercato prodotti vendibili.

L’azienda chiama gli studenti del terzo anno del

corso di Fashion Design a progettare una capsule

collection A/I di 6 t-shirt per Sportmax Code.

I giovani talenti hanno espresso la loro interpre-

tazione nel rispetto del DNA del marchio, inse-

rendo la creatività in un contesto più ampio.

Characterised by simplicity and classicism, research

and quality of materials, Max Mara has become

an international brand with sales points throughout

the world.

Federica Magnani, brand manager, emphasises

Max Mara’s propensity to invest in young

persons who reason in terms of green field at

360°, since Max Mara is a company that requires

concreteness, that aims to place sellable products

on the market.

The company asked third-year students from the

Fashion Design course to design an A/W capsule

collection of six t-shirts for Sportmax Code.

The talented young individuals expressed their

interpretations while respecting the brand’s DNA,

introducing their creativity to a broader context.

I film stanno cambiando abito.

In via di dismissione la pellicola, supporto ma-

teriale odoroso che permette di toccare i film

illudendosi di possederli, le storie per il cinema

si rivestono oggi della trasparenza immateriale

dei files. Inevitabile. Un secolo è durato il domi-

nio del nastro di celluloide che le storie le con-

teneva fisicamente davvero, belle, visibili, tante

fotografie una di fila all’altra. Un abito degno per

immaginifiche invenzioni della fantasia e avven-

ture quotidiane strappalacrime.

Poi, nell’epoca del digitale, il corpo delle storie

diventa preda di astratti algoritmi che lo denuda-

no. Ma che vestito può essere quello che ingloba

in un chip tutta la memoria del mondo?

storie raccontate da immagini in movimento con-

tinueranno ad esistere.

Certo che, come dice Riccardo operatore cine-

matografico e studente di NABA “i colori e la

disposizione dei cristalli che formano l’emulsione

del fotogramma hanno una qualità che nessun

pixel riuscirà mai ad eguagliare ”

Films are changing dress.

As motion picture film stock, the palpable

odorous medium which conveys an illusion of

being owned by its holder, rapidly becomes

obsolete, cinema stories are now dressed in

intangible transparent files. The inevitable.

The domination of celluloid film stock, which

physically contained beautiful, visible stories,

a series of photographs one after the other,

lasted for a century. A dress worthy of fanciful

imaginative inventions and daily tear-jerking

adventures.

Then, with the digital era, the essence of stories

became the prey of abstract algorithms striping

it bear. But what dress can incorporate the

world’s entire memory in a chip?

Perhaps films will no longer be called films,

but stories told through motion pictures

will continue to exist. Without a doubt, as

commented by Riccardo, film projectionist and

NABA student “the colours and make-up of the

crystals forming film emulsion frames are of a

quality that no pixel will ever be able to match”

Stardust.

Come declinare questa parola in ambito visivo?

David Bowie, il glam rock e lo star system sono

i riferimenti immediati, ma ad un’analisi più ap-

profondita altri autori possono essere chiamati in

causa. David Lynch con la sua visionaria filmogra-

fia ci suggerisce quanto la luce (delle stelle) ne-

cessiti delle tenebre per poter meglio risplendere.

Lynch seduce e depista lo spettatore con modalità

narrative che ricordano il nastro di Moebius.

Una figura composta da una sola superficie, che

ha un solo lato e che non ammette le tradizionali

distinzioni tra interno ed esterno, tra alto e basso.

Dopo aver percorso la sua superficie si torna in-

fatti sempre al punto di partenza, come accade

in molti film di Lynch dove la fine coincide con

il principio. Il nastro di Moebius era stato scelto

anche Mariko Mori per la scenografia di Madame

Butterfly messa in scena alla Fenice di Venezia

lo scorso anno.

Il suo simbolismo rappresentava perfettamente

la dualità di quell’opera in cui dialogano Oriente

e Occidente, amore e morte, guerra e pace, così

come nelle opere dell’artista giapponese santua-

ri shintoisti assumono connotazioni cyberpunk, il

passato si contamina con il futuro tra spiritualità,

moda e feticci high tech. La polvere di stelle può

quindi svelare aspetti inesplorati della realtà, le

cui apparenze non sono altro che le proiezioni

del nostro immaginario.

E dei nostri desideri più nascosti.

Stardust.

How can this word be expressed visually?

David Bowie, glam rock and the star system

are immediate references, but through a more

in-depth analysis other artists can be singled out.

David Lynch with his visionary filmography

suggests how the light (of the stars) needs

darkness in order to shine brighter. Lynch

seduces and diverts spectators with a way of

narrating that recalls the Moebius strip.

A figure consisting in a single surface, which

has only one side, which does not allow for

traditional distinctions between the inside and

outside, between the side and bottom.

Moving along its surface, in fact, you always

return to the point of departure, as occurs in

many of Lynch’s film, where the end coincides

with the beginning.

The Moebius strip was also chosen by Mariko

Mori for the Madame Butterfly set staged at the

Teatro La Fenice in Venice last year.

Its symbolism perfectly represented the duality

of that opera in which East and West, love and

death, war and peace dialogue, just as how

Shinto shrines assume cyberpunk connotations

in the works of the Japanese artist, the past

is contaminated with the future between

spirituality, fashion and high-tech fetishes.

Star dust can therefore reveal unexplored aspects

of reality, whose appearance is nothing more

than projections of our imagination.

And of our deepest desires.

Tsinghua University, una delle più prestigiose università cinesi

con cui NABA collabora da anni.

More than 20 outfits by students from Tsinghua University,

one of the most prestigious universities in China and with

which NABA has collaborated for years, will be showcased on

the runway together with NABA student creations during the

three-year BA in Fashion Design final fashion show.

Tutti noi siamo fatti di polvere di stelle.

Ma qualcuno lo è ancora di più. Questo è quanto

balza alla mente ammirando Stardust, il bodysu-

it-kimono creato da Kansai Yamamoto per il

David Bowie del periodo Ziggy.

Riflessi stellari argentei sul nero profondo dello

spazio. Forme e dimensioni aliene per un inter-

prete che ha sempre incarnato il vero spirito del-

la diversità e dell’avanguardia.

Un incontro fra visionari che ha generato qualco-

sa di unico e, davvero, stellare.

We are all made of star dust.

But some more than others. This is what springs

to mind when admiring Stardust, the bodysuit-

kimono created by Kansai Yamamoto for David

Bowie during the Ziggy period.

Silvery stars reflected on the deep black of space.

Alien shapes and sizes for a performer who has

always embodied the true spirit of diversity and

avant-garde.

A meeting of visionaries who have generated

something unique and truly exceptional.

Per me stardust è la contrapposizione tra quello che lo spettatore vede sul palco,

ovvero una performance precisa, coordinata, studiata, non sapendo il lavoro che in realtà sta dietro

ad ogni singolo movimento e la fatica e il sacrificio di ogni ballerino per arrivare a quel risultato.

La parola stardust evoca in me un un ricordo lontano,

intrappolato in vecchie e impolverate fotografie. Una sensazione che ritorna,

un’immagine incolore, confusa, sbiadita.

TURBANS è il nome del progetto che ha visto come protagonisti

gli studenti del Triennio in Fashion Design con indirizzo Fashion

Styling and Communication.

Partendo da un’attenta analisi del turbante e degli anni ‘70 il

risultato è stato uno styling accattivante.

Non un semplice mix tra i due temi, ma un’elaborazione che

esprime una più profonda e attenta analisi di tendenza.

TURBANS is the name of the project starring students of the

BA in Fashion Design - Fashion Styling and Communication.

Departing from a careful analysis of the turban and the 1970s,

the end result of the project is an eye-catching styling.

Not a simple mix of the two themes, but a process expressing

a deeper and more careful analysis of trends.
