StARTS Monthly StationARTS Program of Choice at The Academies of Bryan Station

September 2017, 1st edition, volume 1

The mission of StationARTS is to foster, advance, and mentor a community of students who will innovate,

create, perform, and continue their education and lifelong participation in the arts.

StationARTS will:

• Encourage individual student growth in their chosen discipline in a small arts based learning

community

• Provide focused instruction from highly qualified faculty

• Integrate arts instruction throughout the academic curriculum

• Allow students the opportunity to experience professional performances and work with guest

artists and community arts partners

• Prepare students to be college and/or career ready in their chosen arts discipline

Directors' Message

Welcome to a new year in StationARTS!

We are very excited about all the new changes that are taking place at The Academies of Bryan Station

High School. New to StationARTS is the Flex period. Students who are pure StationARTS majors meet

with their major area's teacher, either Mr. Hicks (Music), Ms. Schentrup (Visual Arts), or Mrs. Chaffin

(Drama and Dance). These students will be working on future performances or artworks, completing

their capstone portfolios, and meeting to discuss each other's work and performances in convocation.

There are many opportunities on the horizon. In this issue you will find information from our counselor,

Mrs. Brandy Jones, information about the StationARTS Tour field trip on September 19th, the dates for

Open Houses, and exciting news about the achievements of our students and faculty. This is going to be

a great year.

If you know of an 8th grade student who would be interested in attending StationARTS, please pass

along that the deadline to apply is October 7th. The deadline for students who are already enrolled at

Bryan Station High School to apply is December 1st. These perspective students need to see their Fine

Arts Teacher, their counselor, or contact one of the directors for more information. The school's

website has received a new look. We will let everyone know when the new StationARTS Website is up

and running!

This is going to be a great year. Thank you for your dedication and support for the arts at The

Academies of Bryan Station High School

Sincerely,

Kelly Mayes and Lynn Schentrup

Co-Directors of StationARTS

Counselor's Message

Hello! I hope that your child's year is off to a great start! If I have not yet met you, please allow me to

introduce myself. My name is Brandy Jones and I am the counselor for the StationARTS program in

additions to the Engineering Academy. I have a personal passion for the arts, and am so glad to be a

part of the team helping your student to develop his/her talents. This is my tenth year at Bryan Station

High School and I am really excited about the opportunity that this year holds for StationARTS! As you

can see from our calendar, we already have some wonderful performances and events planned.

My role as a school counselor is to provide academic guidance to my students in order to help them to

achieve success here at school and prepare them for their next steps beyond graduation. Additionally, I

can provide support and resources if/when personal issues arise. Throughout the month of September,

I will be meeting with seniors individually to discuss their transcripts, make sure they are on track in

terms of meeting graduation requirements, and discuss next steps for their post-graduate plans to

ensure that they are college and career-ready. I will be focusing my efforts on juniors and sophomores

in the following months. Please feel free to contact me at 381-3308 x2036 or

[email protected] if you have any questions or if I can be of assistance to you or your

child. I look forward to a great year!

stop between the Leestown and Bryan Station Middle Schools visits.

Celebrations

This fall, the Theatre department will perform the play, Radium Girls. The play is set in the 1920's and

tells the story of factory women who painted radium onto watch and clock faces to make them glow in

the dark. Unfortunately, radium has the nasty side affect of radiation poisoning. The play dives into

issues of illness, civil rights, and early feminism. The play will be performed October 19th-22nd in the

auditorium.

Auditions for Radium Girls were conducted on August 31st and September 1st.

"Mrs. Brice got me involved in Art 1. Then I had Mrs. Davis and she continued to push me. All the

teachers continue to push me."

During his Junior year in the StationARTS program, Uriel Trujillo created an original artwork for the PTSA

Reflections Art Competition. The theme was "What's Your Story". Uriel's piece, Beyond the Borders, is

about his family's journey from Mexico to Kentucky. The drawing displays a powerful statement about

immigration to our state. His artwork won the Bryan Station High School PTA award, the Fayette County

1st place award, and the State of Kentucky PTA 1st place award for Visual Art, and received a Award for

Excellence in Visual Art at the National PTA Reflections Competition. You can see Uriel's piece and much

more go at the PTA National Winners websitePTA National Winners website.
