[Inductive mode] If Vstatcom is lower than V, the inductive current flows from the AC system to the converter [Capacitive mode] If Vstatcom is higher than V, the capacitive current flows from the converter to the AC system
Principle
STATCOM can be operated in two different modes:- In voltage regulation mode (The voltage is regulated within limits as explained below)- In VAR control mode (STATCOM reactive power output is kept constant)
When STATCOM is operated in voltage regulation mode, it implements the following V-I characteristic. STATCOM can be operated over its full output current range even at very low system voltage levels. In other words, the maximum capacitive or inductive output current of STATCOM can be maintained independently of the AC system voltage, and the maximum VAR generation or absorption changes linearly with the ac system voltage.

STATCOM valve is a core component of STATCOM equipment. Valve structure consists of a wide range of techniques, such as sub-module installation, solid/fluid stress analysis, EMC, coordination of high volt(HV) insulation.
Sub-module is basic component of MMC (Modular Multilevel Converter) and is assembly of power module and DC capacitor. Circuit diagram of sub-module for MMC STATCOM is shown in Figure 1.Power module is assembly of four IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor), Bypass switch, GDU (Gate Drive Unit), Power Supply and control, etc. Converter Valve is a row of series connected sub-modules. These sub-modules are individually controlled and can output between a state with full module voltage (±Uc) and a state with zero module voltage.

Peak load in Jeju Island is 759MW and it supported by 2 LCC HVDCs, Synchronize generation & Wind Generation. 2 x ±50MVAr STATCOMs contribute to the stable operation of HVDCs & system. For the simulation, the Jeju Island power system was modeled by the PSCAD/EMTDC.
Case Study
Effects of STATCOMs on power system in Jeju Island In the simulation, three(3) kind of cases are carried out by using PSCAD/EMTDC program.
By comparing the actual data and the simulation results, the reliability of the modeling of the Jeju island power system has been confirmed. The simulation results have shown that the STATCOM reduces voltage fluctuation and it regulates the voltage by controlling reactive power.
